Important Leadership Opportunity Aboriginal Cancer Lead

August 2013 The Champlain Regional Cancer Program (RCP) and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) are recruiting a regional Aboriginal Cancer Lead to engage and collaborate across Primary Care settings to advocate for and address the primary care needs of First Nation, Inuit and Mtis (FNIM) peoples across Champlain region. This position has a reporting relationship to the Regional Vice President (RVP) of the Cancer Program.

Position Overview
The Aboriginal Cancer Lead provides leadership on initiatives and activities to support primary care engagement and collaboration between FNIM partners/support systems and health service providers across all aspects of the cancer journey. The Lead works in partnership and close collaboration with the Champlain RVP, FNIM partners and Cancer Program Clinical and Administrative Leadership teams across the continuum of cancer care services.

Key Responsibilities
1) FNIM Advisory and Strategic Collaboration Champions the Aboriginal Cancer Strategy (ACS) II strategic vision and goals Provides educational opportunities on evidence-based clinical guidelines, standards and policies Identifies and responds to regional-level system issues related to FNIM specific cancer needs Assists with the development of effective strategies for engaging primary care in the implementation of the Ontario Cancer Plan as it relates to FNIM Participates in regional and provincial FNIM expert/community panels, including guidelines development, regional panels and research projects as required

2) Cancer Screening Assists in identifying screening participation targets for FNIM peoples relating to colorectal, breast and cervical cancer Supports the design and implementation of regional campaigns Supports family physicians and other primary care providers to improve screening practices with FNIM people and facilitates a process for FNIM peoples who do not have a designated Primary healthcare provider.

3) Cancer Care Supports the broader mandate of the ACS II in building relationships, prevention, survivorship, and palliative care Works with provincial & regional leadership to develop and support primary care engagement opportunities in cancer services for FNIM peoples

Advises on the design and development of decision tools, guidelines and other materials for FNIM patient care.

4) Champlain RCP Operations Completes an annual work plan identifying key activities, deliverables, performance measures and timelines in collaboration with the Champlain FNIM partners and RCP leadership team Participates in regular update and planning sessions with the RVP and Champlain RCP Leadership team.

Qualities of the ideal candidate


A physician, active in clinical practice with an understanding of FNIM communities is preferred Recognized as a leader by her/his colleagues in the region Deep commitment to improving cancer care for FNIM people by engaging and integrating primary care throughout the cancer journey Excellent communication skills Strategic thinking Strong problem solving skills Experience working effectively within teams.

Terms of Appointment
The Aboriginal Cancer Lead will work the equivalent of 1 day/week and may be appointed up to a 3 year term to be reviewed annually.
