I have corrected these where possible in this text purely for the sake of consistency, however source material is unchanged. Stated ages, particularly on death certs (sometimes on census forms) often do not tally with the birth or baptismal records. This could be vanity on the part of the person involved or genuine mistakes (many could not read or write). I take all records at face value as it is not possible to verify these records now. PATRICK POWER 1820 - 7/2/1917

AT A GLANCE:
Born Spouse/Marriage Date Occupation Children Known Address(es) 1820 Elizabeth McLoughlin; 18th November 1849 Master Farrier 6 3 Shaw Street, Dublin 2; 14 Maguinness Place, Dublin 2; 16 Lombard Street East, Dublin 2; 35 Sandwith Lane, Dublin 2; 7 Hanover Parade East, Dublin 2. 7th February 1917 Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin 9.

Died Burial Place

Patrick was born around 1820 in the city of Dublin. (No record found yet). He had a sister Anne (Anastasia) who was godmother to his daughter Annie; and a brother John who was godfather to his daughter Teresa. He married Elizabeth McLoughlin on 18th November 1849 in St. Andrews Church, Westland Row. Elizabeth was born in 1819 and probably grew up in the Pearse Street area. I have found a possible baptismal record from St. Marys Pro-cathedral but unable to verify. Elizabeth had a brother named Hugh who was godfather to their daughter Annie; and a brother James who was godfather to their daughter Elizabeth.

Patrick was a Master Farrier by trade. At this time, the horse was very important and the care of him indispensable. Thus, the role of the hoof care provider (farrier) was born. In those days, anyone having talent in the areas of horsemanship and horse care was a major asset. A farrier was a skilled craftsperson with a sound knowledge of both theory and practice of the craft, capable of shoeing all types of feet, whether normal or defective, of making shoes to suit all types of work and working conditions, and of devising corrective measures to compensate for faulty limb action.
Figure 2: Farriers at Work

The couple had at least 6 children and lived in the general area of Great Brunswick Street which is now Pearse Street for all of their married life. Various different addresses are in the records: 14 Maguinness Place, 3 Shaw Street, and by 1891 they lived at 16 Lombard Street (Patrick & Margaret Lecky (nee Power) are living on this street). The family may have moved from Shaw Street when the railway bought up the houses to facilitate the building of the railway bridge. Elizabeth died on 29th July 1889 and is buried in Glasnevin (on 1st August (Ref. Garden TF 103). The family address is 1 Brunswick Villas, Shaw Street and the cause of death is fracture of the hip. The Glasnevin register states that she died in Sir Patrick Dunns Hospital. I have been unable to find a death cert but have confirmed the date of death it is also the headstone date of death. The grave where Elizabeth is buried contains many family members but the only inscription is for her. Patrick died in 1917 but the family must not have had the money to put an inscription on the headstone.

Figure 3: Elizabeth Power Gravestone Glasnevin

By 1890 Patrick was living at 16 Lombard Street with his daughter Elizabeth. She died that year of TB and had been keeping house for him at this address. In 1901 Patrick lived with his granddaughter Alice Leckey at this same address. None of Patricks children are living at this address at the time as they are either married or have passed away. By 1911, Patrick was 87 years of age and lived with his son-in-law Patrick Rooney (widower of Marie Rooney) at 35 Sandwith Lane. Patrick dies on 7th February 1917 (last address is 7 Hanover Parade East) of

Maria was born in 1851 and she was baptised in St. Andrews Church, Westland Row. Her god parents were Joseph Curran and Julia Gallagher. Maria married Laurence Callaghan of 32 Moss Street (27/11/1842 - 9/3/1883) on 20th September 1871. Laurence was a coal factor. I have found records for 5 children; James Joseph born 1872; Elizabeth Mary born 1874; Catherine born 1875 at 36 Townsend Street; Patrick Joseph born 1878 at 11 Shaw Street; and Maria Jane born 1881 at 30 Sandwith Place.

Figure 4: St. Andrews, Westland Row

Her daughter Catherine succumbs to croup at the age of 3 (1878) and is buried in Glasnevin in the Power family grave (Ref. Garden TF 103). Laurence dies on 9th March 1883 of stomach cancer at Sir Patrick Duns Hospital (he is also buried in Glasnevin). Marias son Patrick dies in 1893 aged 15 years of a decline (TB). He is buried in Glasnevin (Ref. St. Bridgets II, 276).

Maria married for a second time in 1898. Her husband was Patrick Rooney, a neighbour from Shaw Street, who is a carman (drove a delivery vehicle horse and cart usually). In 1901 Maria, Patrick and her daughter from her first marriage, Maria Callaghan lived at 35 Sandwith Lane. Elizabeth and James are not listed so may have married (check out). Maria died on 26th June 1908 of cancer of the uterus and is buried in Glasnevin (Ref. St. Bridgets II 276). I have found a possible marriage record for Maria, her daughter in 1904 (to be verified by MC) and this seems plausible because I cannot find her in the 1911 census. In 1911, Patricks father-in-law, Patrick Power lived with him at 35 Sandwith Lane. Patrick died on 15th September 1933 aged 79 and was buried in the same plot as his wife Maria (cause of death is unknown).

Annie was born in 1852 and was baptised in St. Andrews Church, Westland Row. Her sponsors were Anastasia Power (aunt) and Hugh McLoughlin (uncle). Annie married Richard Howard of 35 Buckingham Street on 6th June 1881. Richard worked as a railway clerk with the Great Northern Railway (GNR). The witnesses were Richard Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Power (Annies sister). In 1901 the family lived at No. 18 Newcomen Avenue, East Wall which is close to Amiens Street train station where Richard possibly worked. They had five children: John Joseph born Q2 1882 whose occupation is labourer in a mineral water factory; Richard Francis born Q3 1883 whose occupation is a book binder; Patrick born Q2 1885 whose occupation is compositor; Raphael Joseph born Q1 1887 who is a telegraph messenger and Elizabeth born c. 1889 who is just 12 and still at school.

By 1911 the family lived at 7 Bessborough Avenue with the exception of Raphael. John is now an unemployed general labourer; Richard is still a book binder and Patrick is now a solicitors clerk. Elizabeth now 21 has no occupation. The family have a boarder a widow Mary Doran, aged 43 whose occupation is listed as a seamstress. I have found several possible marriage records for Elizabeth (to be verified in the GRO). Besides Raphael, I have not found if her other brothers married but I suspect they did as the death notice below mentions grandchildren.
