Langley PTA Strategic Goals 3 year Plan : SY 2013-2016

GOAL #1:
Support Langley students achievement and growth through the development of enriching activities, programs and events. Person/ Committee Responsible: Student Achievement, Enrichment and Activities Committee Objectives: Work with Langley Principal, Teacher and Staff to develop a cohesive plan for student enrichment prior to the start of each school year. Support students in having a voice in their education through student representation. Assist in the development of field trips to enhance school S.T.E.M curriculum through hands on experiences. Identify speakers to enhance students view of S.T.E.M career paths, community resources and world culture. Assist in the development of school activities and events that reinforce Langley school culture, community building and home school partnerships. Assist in the development of an After school program that will enrich our students in S.T.E.M, Sports, Arts, and World Languages. Identify partnerships that will mentor students and train them to be leaders, problem solvers and to become independent thinkers. Activity, Practice and Policy that will be implemented this school year: Practice: Student Achievement, Enrichment and Activities Committee meets with Principal and Identified staff to discuss a student enrichment plan for the school year and develop plans for how the PTA can support that plan. Practice: Identify student representatives that assist with voicing student concerns, student event planning and various school activities to reinforce students involvement. Activity: Development of school field trip calendar for Lower School (PS - K) and Upper School (1-5th grade). Activity: Development of Monthly Speaker Series that will highlight various STEM careers, world culture and community resources. Work

with Community Outreach to develop list of speakers. Activity: Development of yearly in house events and activities calendar that will reinforce the Langley School Culture. Activity: Identify mentors and community partners that will assist with the development of our students as leaders. Activity: Identify Calendar of Programs to publish on website and in all school announcements that occur outside of school hours to reinforce student and family development. Activity: Identify After School programs that will enrich our students in aftercare.

Timelines for implementation: School Field Trip Calendar should be developed and approved prior to Sept 2013 by Principal and Teachers. School Culture Calendar should be developed and approved prior to Sept 2013 by Principal and Teachers. School Monthly Speakers should be developed and approved prior to Sept 2013 by Principal and Teachers. Identification of enrichment activities, mentors, and out of school activities should be ongoing and families should be updated through all possible venues of communication. Identify Community Resources and Funding: See Community Resources worksheets for Speakers, Community Organization and Field trips. Work with fundraising committee and School Administration to identify sources of funding. Evaluation:( How do we know we succeeded ) Standard Process for Event Planning is created. School Trip Calendar is Created Yearly. School Culture Events Calendar is created yearly. Development of Monthly Speakers series. Development of various after school programs to enrich students. End of Year Survey to teacher and staff to review the year and areas of improvement. End of Year Student and Parent Focus group to review year and areas of improvement.

GOAL #2: Increase parent engagement and PTA membership


through parent-school advocacy, parent education, volunteer development and effective parent-school communications.
Person/ Committee Responsible: Membership, Parent Advocacy and Volunteer Committee Objectives: Increase PTA membership through PTA drives, events and effective outreach. Work with School Administration to Develop programs that enable parents to understand school policies, reports cards and testing. Assist with the development of community resources that ensure parents have access to housing, health, nutrition, clothing and feel safe. Assist and advertise programs that help parents to build their skills through furthering education opportunities and work skills. Identify a formal school policy in which parents can express their needs and concerns. Identify volunteer opportunities throughout the school year and recruit parents to keep them engaged. Activity, Practice and Policy that will be implemented this school year: Practice:Work with Student Enrichment Committee to ensure all school event volunteer needs are met. Practice: Development of Volunteer Enrollment form and database. Practice: Development and Advertisement of Volunteer Activities in school calendar, newsletter, website and with Community Resources. Practice: Ensure PTA schedule is published prior to the beginning of the school year and sent to all stakeholders calendars. Activity: Survey Parents to develop list of Parent Volunteers incorporating their Skills, Interest, Availability and Community or Business Affiliations. ( Use Homeroom Ambassadors for assistance). Activity: Quarterly PTA drive to increase membership:Paw Prints and Pizza. Activity: Assist with Development of Homeroom Ambassador program. Activity: Development of a yearly Langley Parent Handbook that outlines, school mission and vision, school schedule, yearly school activities, administrative contact info, academic and learning, behavior model, etc. for dissemination to parents. Policy: Work with School Principal to identify a policy in which parents

can voice their need and concerns and share it with parents. Timelines for implementation: August- Work with Student Enrichment Committee to identify all events and develop volunteers list for each event. August: Survey Parents to develop list of Parent Volunteers and create database. August and Early September - Meet with Teachers to identify Homeroom Ambassadors. Quarterly-PTA drives will occur at the beginning of each advisory periods. Ongoing efforts should be made to meet and improve parent concerns. Identify dates for the development of the parent handbook. Identify Community Resources and Funding: Parent Volunteer List. Work with teacher to develop list of Homeroom Ambassadors. Work with CPOC and School Administration to develop parenting workshops. Contact City Year DC for event and activity volunteers. Contact DC Kiwanis for event and activity volunteers. Work with Community Outreach Committee to Post volunteer opportunities to community listservs, social media, business partners and all interested stakeholders. Evaluation:( How do we know we succeeded ) Identification of Policies and procedures in which Parents can express their needs and concerns. Development of Parent and Community Volunteer Database. Development of a Langley Parent Handbook. Parent Engagement increased based on data from membership enrollment and increased school participation. Parents express interest and feel that they are an integral part of their child's education and can identify ways they can be involved. Positive changes in Parents Attitudes towards the effectiveness of the PTA through Surveys.

GOAL #3 Increase community partnerships through effective


communication tools in order to support Langley school culture and increase enrollment.
Person/ Committee Responsible: Community Outreach and Communications Committee Objectives: Work with Langley Principal and Outreach Coordinators on a comprehensive plan to engage businesses and community partners ensure a cohesive plan is communicated and agreed upon. Work with Langley Administration to ensure a comprehensive marketing plan including branding, a public relations plan, social media and website updates, and community outreach. Ensure effective communication to parents and community partners through the use of community listservs, blogs, websites and social media. Identify community events for Langley to build school-community partnerships. Engage all Langley Stakeholders as active and accountable partners. Development of events to increase enrollment with prospective parents. Work with Mckinley Education Campus Administration and Parents in order to build and strengthen the STEM school community. Activity, Practice and Policy that will be implemented this school year: Practice: The Community Outreach and Communications Committee should meet with the Langley Administration at the start of each school year to ensure a cohesive community outreach plan is made and agreed upon. Activity: Development of Langley Collateral ( Brochure, T-Shirts, Stickers, Keychains ). Activity: Development of comprehensive Open house Enrollment Plan to engage prospective parents. Activity: Assistance with development of the Langley Partnership Kick Off Event. Activity: Development of a Business Partnership Databases entailing Business Type, Event Type. Activity: Work with Fundraising Committee on Development of Giving Checklist outlining ways stakeholders can give monetarily, donating time and supplies needed for events, or cost to cover an entire event or

activity. Policy: Work with the Langley School Administration to identify a School Communications Plan outlining a timeline on how events are communicated to stakeholders, when newsletters are published, website content updated and who is responsible for posting on Social Media. Identify point persons for maintaining each of these communications.

Timelines for implementation: August 2013- Meet with Langley Administration to review business partnership kick off. August: Assists Langley Administration with development of Database of Businesses and Community Partners. August 2013: Assist with website development and create plan for content , plan and go live date. Ongoing efforts should be made to identify businesses and community partners in order to support Langley Culture and Student Enrollment. September - Develop Plan for Langley Open Houses to increase enrollment prior to DCPS lottery.

Identify Community Resources and Funding: Refer to Community Resources worksheets Evaluation:( How do we know we succeeded ) Langley is Branded as the Community School for Eckington, Bloomingdale, NOMA, Bates/Hanover, Stronghold and Edgewood. Community Organization and Businesses identify ways they can be involved stakeholders and feel supported by Langley. Langley Website, Listserv and Social Media is well maintained and utilized. Langley Enrollment is increased.

GOAL #4 Increase PTA monies through fundraising, identifying new sources of revenue and maintaining good fiscal management policies. Person/ Committee Responsible: Fundraising and Fiscal management Committee Objectives: Ensure the maintenance of good financial records to maintain 501(c)3 status. Raise money to support student enrichment activities and to promote a positive school culture. Build relationships that provide benefits to PTA members and support our financial needs. Create opportunities for yearly fundraising events. Maintain Langley Giving Accounts ( ie Harris Teeter, Box Tops, Giant, French Toast). Activity, Practice and Policy that will be implemented this school year: Practice: Meet with Langley School Administration to discuss and approve all fundraising activities for the projected school year. Practice: Work with Community Outreach and Student Enrichment and Activities Committee to ensure all requirements for fundraising are being met. Activity: Develop plan for yearly fundraising events with Student Achievement, Enrichment and Activities Committee. Activity: Identify stakeholders who are willing to donate funds, in kind donations or time through Survey Data. Activity: Develop Giving Checklist for donors to identify various opportunities and a plan for how donors are followed up with. Activity: Develop quarterly giving appeal to send out donors. Activity: Work on development of a adopt a classroom program. Activity: Identify grants that will assist with school enrichment and programming. Timelines for implementation: August 2013 - Approve Fundraising Plans with Langley Administration August 2013 - Develop Donor Giving Checklist Ongoing: Support Langley Administration in identifying stakeholders Quarterly: Develop Giving Appeal for Donors
