505 Cornelis De Heem (Flemish, 1631-1695) Autumn Still Life with Pomegranates, Chestnuts, Oranges, White and Red Grapes, Plums, Wheat, and Insects Signed C. DE HEEM l.r., inscribed Wolfe... on the reverse, identified on a label from Harvard University Art Museums, affixed to the backing. Oil on canvas, 25 1/2 x 21 1/2 in. (64.8 x 54.6 cm), within an ebonized frame. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, subtle varnish inconsistencies. N.B. Cornelis de Heem apprenticed under his father, the sumptuous still life painter Jan Davidsz de Heem (Flemish, 1606-1684). He began his career in Antwerp, where he became a master of the painters guild in 1660, and later worked in Utrecht, IJsselstein, and The Hague. (1)

His still lifes are characterized by daring colour harmonies, sometimes with a strong blue as the ribbon in the present work illustrates. (2) Like his father, he devoted himself to floral, fruit, and opulent still lifes, capturing the most difficult and ephemeral detailsthe reflection on silver, dewdrops on fruit, and the subtle sheen of rich fabric. The present work celebrates the splendor of autumn in the rich variety of the harvest depicted, but true to a vanitas, such details as half-eaten fruit, woody vines, and powdery mildew also foreshadow the subtle passing of the season. The present work was on long-term loan to the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts, since 1995.

569 Fitz Henry Lane (American, 1804-1865) Camden Mts. from the Graves Signed and dated FH Lane 1862 l.r., titled, signed, dedicated, and inscribed ...F.H. Lane to J.L. Stevens Jr./Gloucester 1862./A Souvenir of our excursion to Penobscot Bay, Septr. 1855. on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 13 x 22 in. (33.0 x 55.9 cm), framed. Condition: Lined (with window to inscription), retouch, fine craquelure, minor abrasions along tacking edges. Provenance: The artist to Joseph L. Stevens Jr., Gloucester, Massachusetts; [...], Quester Gallery, Greenwich, Connecticut; private New Hampshire collection. N.B. Lane first visited Maine in 1848 when he was invited by his close friend from Gloucester, Joseph Lowe Stevens, Jr. (18231908), to visit his familys home.1 A friendship blossomed between Lane and Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Lowe Stevens, Sr. In the 1850s Lane was invited several summers to stay at the Old Homestead, as the Stevens residence was known, in Castine. The home offered direct access to the Penobscot Bay, and Stevens, Jr., would row or sail Lane to various locations to make preparatory sketches for his oils. Lane continued to visit this region through 1863, where he would paint many pictures of the vicinity as well as small oils of the family house and views done especially for presentation to the Stevens family.2

By 1855, Lane had made three welldocumented cruising trips of the Penobscot Bay regionone in 1850, 1851, and 1852. Most of his sketches were made while sailing leisurely, conditions permitting, or at anchor with a favorable prospect before him, sometimes partway up the mast for an elevated view, while others were from the deck of a steamer either arriving or departing Rockland.3 Based on the dedication on the reverse, it can be surmised that the present work originates from sketches during the first leg of his trip in September 1855 around the southern shores of Penobscot Bay, and completed in his Gloucester studio in 1862. Lanes 1855 excursion was his penultimate visit to Maine. Scholars have noted that the paintings completed in the years prior to his fourth and final visit in 1863, such as the present work, reflect his mature style and are distinguished by a sophisticated minimalist approach. John Wilmerding notes that these later paintings especially tend to be more generalized in location and poignant in feeling, perhaps because they were more detached images made from memory and Franklin Kelly notes an increased refinement and elegance whereby gradually, he distilled the essentials from long-familiar subjects.4 Kelly has speculated that this approach may have been partially motivated by nostalgia, as the lower Penobscot Bay shoreline was becoming less pristine and increasingly industrial in the 1860s. Lanes reference to the present work as a souvenir of his 1855 excursion supports this interpretation of his later work being rooted more in memory and emotion than faithful documentation.

623 Conrad Wise Chapman (American, 18421910) Cavalry Camp of the So. Ca. Holcomb Legion, New Kent, Co. Va. Mar., 1863 Monogrammed, inscribed, and dated CWC186 l.l., titled, dedicated, and signed for Revd. Dr. Lyman/by C.W.Chapman in whiting on the reverse, also with the embossed stamp and label of Charles Robertson & Co., London, on the reverse. Oil on paperboard, 10 x 14 in. (25.4 x 35.6 cm), framed. Condition: Minor losses, abrasions, fine craquelure, very subtle bowing, minor surface grime. Provenance: Probably Reverend Thomas Benedict Lyman, fourth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, then descended within the family; through to Joseph Valentino Toschi, JV Fine Arts Gallery, San Francisco, private Illinois collection, c. 1960s.

N.B. Chapmans path to becoming an official artist of the Confederacy came full circle by way of Rome, Italy. Chapman was born in Virginia, but in 1850, his artist father, John Gadsby Chapman, moved his family to Rome to pursue the booming market for works to Americans on the Grand Tour. Subsequently, J.G. Chapman, who had trained professionally at the National Academy of Design, apprenticed both of his sons as painters in Rome. Despite having been raised abroad, Chapman retained a deep sense of loyalty to his Southern roots. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the nineteen-year-old Chapman enlisted with the Confederacy, and sold what works he could to pay for a return trip to America. Chapman saw battle in the years between 1861 and 1863, first in the Company D, 3rd Kentucky Infantry Regiment, where he fought in the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, and later in the 59th Virginia Infantry Regiment. He made the switch from soldier to artist in 1863, when he was recommended as a fine artist to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida and headed to Charleston to assist General P.G.T. Beauregard to document the citys fortifications for the generals memoir.

The present work, previously known only from an etching by J.G. Chapman, depicts a day of respite in the Confederate army encampment of the Holcombe Legion. The Legion, which saw battle in the defense of Charleston and elsewhere in South Carolina, was formed on November 13, 1861, and named for Lucy Petway Holcombe Pickens, the spirited wife of South Carolina Governor Francis W. Pickens. Though now indistinct, it can be surmised that the inscription and date lower left read ROMA 1864, which was the year that Chapman was given leave to return to Italy to attend to his ailing mother. The work is dedicated to a Dr. Lyman, believed to be Reverend Theodore Benedict Lyman, D.D. (1815-1893), the fourth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Dr. Lyman traveled extensively in Europe and the Middle East in the 1860s, serving as chaplain at the American Embassy in Rome in 1865, and leading the St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Rome from 1866 to 1879. $400,000-600,000

CRAIG l.l., identified on a label from Combridges Fine Art Galleries, Dublin, Ireland, and with labels from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and John Magee, Belfast, Ireland, affixed to the stretchers. Shattuck, c. 1938; by descent in the family of the current owner; a North Shore, Massachusetts, estate.

The present work is one of several Irish paintings collected by notable businessman, civic leader, and philanthropist Henry Lee Shattuck (1879-1971). Among his works were Paul Henrys The Bog at Evening, 19223, and Mountain Village, 19269, currently in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as Paul Henrys A Bog Near Dingle, Co., Kerry, c. 1928-1930, sold at Skinner, Inc. Shattuck was a New Englander of part Irish descent, and supported Irish cultural exchange through his activities with the Charitable Irish Society of Boston.1 He was also a treasurer and senior fellow of the board of Harvard University from 1929 to 1952, a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1920 to 1930, and from 1943 to 1948, and a member of the Boston City Council from 1933 to 1938.2 Today, he is perhaps best remembered as both the namesake of a public service award that honors employees of the City of Boston, and for his 300-acre woodland bequest in Medfield to the Trustees of Reservations.

Sonsini is best known for his work depicting Latino day laborers in his neighborhood, the Pico-Union district in Los Angeles. In the present work, the portraits frontal and tightly cropped frame evokes a reference to an ID portrait, raising the politically charged issue of immigration and legal documentation. Through his tactile and visceral brushwork, however, Sonsini diffuses the overt politics of this series, focusing on the humanity of his sitters. According to Sonsini, The information on cards in wallets is of little help to me. For me painting the portrait is about recreating the sensation of presence, the experience of having the sitter in my studio.1

N.B. Shanghai-born Way was a student of the modern Chinese calligrapher Li Jian (Chinese, d. c. 1950). He immigrated to the United States in 1956 and settled in Boston, where he studied Architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.1 The Abstract Expressionist ethos resonated with him throughout his career, and his oeuvre can be characterized as a synthesis of Chinese calligraphy (particularly cursive script) and gestural abstraction. Way was the only AsianAmerican artist to exhibit alongside

Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, and Morris Louis, among others, in the 1965 show, Painting Without a Brush at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. More recently, he was the subject of exhibitions at Shanghai Art Museum in 2001 and at the Honolulu Academy of Arts in 2006.
