While the QR codes themselves conform to an ISO standard, not all app developers are as diligent with standards compliance as they should be. In our experience about 80% of issues relating to scan errors are because the scanning app being used is sub-standard, or is challenged by QR codes containing anything more complex than a website URL. We recommend that you browse through the user reviews for QR code scanning apps in the iTunes App Store, Android Market or Blackberry App World. They will highlight which apps are worth having and which have known issues.

We recommend no smaller than 2cm (0.8) however the minimum size of QR codes will depend on: 1. The distance between the QR code and the scanning device, and hence the size the code will appear to be in the viewport of the scanning device if you have one on the side of a building it would need to be very large because its going to be scanned from a long distance, however if its printed in a magazine then the scanning device will be held quite close to it. 2. The size of the dots in the code As the data you put into QR codes increases, the number of dots that the QR codes needs to use to store that data increases accordingly. For a QR code of a given size this will result in progressively smaller dots being used and eventually they will reach a size thats below the resolution limit of the scanning device. As a general rule of thumb we recommend that your QR code should have no more than 50 rows and columns of dots to stay within the usual maximum resolution limits of most smart-phone cameras. 3. Amount of lighting. Most of our generated QR Codes create more and smaller dots than the basic QR Code. This is part of what allows us use space within it to put your logo. Here is a basic size table for our QR Codes: Short Text Less than 156 Med Text Less than 403 Large Text Less than 1274 Contact Data TYPE: characters characters characters Info Our ST QR Codes: Smallest: scanned from 2.8 (7.1cm) away Largest: Our HQ QR Codes: Smallest: scanned from 2.8 (7.1cm) away Largest: Our 720 HD Codes: Smallest: scanned from 2.8 (7.1cm) away Largest: Our 1080 HD QR Smallest: scanned from 2.8 (7.1cm) Codes: away Largest: .8 (2 cm) 5 (12.7 cm) .8 (2 cm) 7.5 (19.1 cm) .8 (2 cm) 10 (25.4 cm) 1.6 (4 cm) 15 (38.1 cm) 1.1 (2.9 cm) 5 (12.7 cm) 1.1 (2.9 cm) 7.5 (19.1 cm) 1.1 (2.9 cm) 10 (25.4 cm) 1.6 (4 cm) 15 (38.1 cm) 2 (5 cm) 5 (12.7 cm) 2 (5 cm) 7.5 (19.1 cm) 2 (5 cm) 10 (25.4 cm) 2 (5 cm) 15 (38.1 cm) 2 (5 cm) 5 (12.7 cm) 2 (5 cm) 7.5 (19.1 cm) 2 (5 cm) 10 (25.4 cm) 2 (5 cm) 15 (38.1 cm)

Regardless of the size of the QR code, any new QR codes should be tested thoroughly in its intended final setting to make sure that it works at that size. Why is my image/logo so small in the QR Code? The image size can be larger but the inner image size is based up on 2 things: 1. There is a maximum size allowed for a QR Code to work. 2. We do not re-size your original image to be any larger than the size you submit, otherwise it will be pixilated. If the original image you uploaded was say only 69 x 100 we will not scale it up to the approximate potential of 350 x 350 that it could be on the 1080 HD QR Codes. If you have a larger/higher quality original image we recommend you work with that one for maximum quality and size within the QR Codes?

Yes. In QR codes the dark bits are always interpreted as data so the dots always need to be a darker color than the background (Well almost always, see the note below). The reliability of the QR code is also determined by the contrast difference between the dots and the background, so pale grey dots on a white background will be difficult for some scanning devices to read and the code may not function properly. Our recommendation: Choose whatever colors you want but make sure the dots are a darker than the background. ADark Background with light colored dots will look unique but will not work. Also please test the qr code to make sure your color scheme can be read by a smart phone. NOTE: Some apps such as the Scan for iPhone supports inverted colors (a dark background and light foreground) but most apps do not support this style.

Yes. In fact we highly recommend that you do test your QR Code with your smartphone before getting the free one and certainly before purchasing a full color branded qr code with your logo. To Test it, use a smart phone and scan the both QR code samples of from our QR Code Generator. The full color one will bring you to our website but will ensure the color scheme works. The free sample B&W QR code will contain your data and you should scan that one to make sure your QR Code Data does what you want.

QR codes have the capability for a fairly high error correction that we can utilize to embed a logo. This high redundancy built into QR Codes set up to use it can take advantage of that duplicated data area in order to place your logo within it. This does make the squares inside the QR Code smaller (or the QR Code itself larger) but it is this that allows us to give you a unique looking QR Code. Here is a quick tip on using our custom QR Code Generator: Check that the embedded image doesnt co-incidentally contain any small square (or almost square) elements that may be interpreted by the scanning device as part of the QR codes data, rather than being ignored as part of the image.

Aquiet zone is placed around the QR code image when its generated to separates the QR code from anything else in its surroundings. The quiet zone is used to buffer the code from its surroundings to prevent any adjacent images or text from being interpreted as part of the code image itself and interfering with the scanning of the code. The size of the buffer zone is mathematically determined when the code is created to ensure an error free code. This buffer zone must be retained. Its simply a white space border and when you generate the code you will see that its part of the actual code image. The quiet zone is recommended to be a minimum of 4 times the width of a single data square in the code image, however depending on the surroundings of the code (ie; against an unpatterned dark background) you may be able to reduce that to 2 times pixel width. If you reduce the size of the quiet zone, the finished QR code should be tested thoroughly in its intended final setting to make sure that it still scans correctly.

If you are uploading an image/logo to put inside your QR Code and see a square or rectangular white border around it, that is because the image you are uploading is actually that shape, even though it may be a circle or other shape inside of it. Also the image is probably a .jpg or .bmp file that does not support transparency. So what can you do? You can convert your image to a .png with a transparent background instead of white background. Most professional graphics programs will allow you to do this (Windows Paint does NOT). If you would like to convert it try searching on google.com or possibly try a suggestion from this yahoo answers page.
