QB
Dropback drills

Purpose:
To teach and improve the footwork of the QB on dropback passes.

Description:
Have QB take his presnap stance, giving a short cadence, simulating the snap and take 3-, 5- and 7-step drops, ending with a throwing motion without actually throwing the ball. In teaching period each QB should do it on his own, but when using this drill as a routine drill, all QBs can line up about 3 to 5 yards apart, with one QB giving the cadence and all QBs doing the drop.

Coaching Points:
(everything is explained for right-handed QBs, for left-handed QBs you have to exchange left and right)

The first step has to be taken with his right foot and should be big and directly behind the left foot so that the drop is straight backwards. While taking his first step the QB turns by bringing his right hip, shoulder and elbow back to accelerate his separation from the LOS The last two steps have to be shorter, so that QB is in good body-control position and ready to throw on his last step. QB should take the ball up in front of his right armpit with his first step, holding it tight with both hands. During the drop the ball should stay put in front of his right armpit, while the elbows should hang/swing loose to improve balance QB should always look over his left shoulder downfield

Equipment:
Ball

Rollout drills

Purpose:
To teach and improve the footwork of the QB on Rollout passes.

Description:
Use a line-strip or put cones up marking the Center and Tackles. Put cones or towels about 6 yrds behind the Tackles. Have QB take his presnap stance, giving a short cadence, simulating the snap and rolling out around the cone/towel in the backfield and doing about 1 yard behind the LOS with a

throwing motion without actually throwing the ball. QB should continue running downfield about 5 yards across the LOS. The throwing motion is just to give the QB more of a feeling where that LOS is, so he will know when he crosses the LOS and can't throw the ball any more. In teaching period each QB should do it on his own, but when using this drill as a routine drill, all QBs can line up about 5 yards apart, with one QB giving the cadence and all QBs doing the rollout (to the same side, of course :-) ).

Coaching Points:

QB has to push off with the left foot (when rolling right) and get depth. The top of the arc should be behind the Tackle (where you put the cone or towel) and be reached with 5 steps. Then the QB should shorten his stride running 'downhill' under control. When running towards the LOS the QB should turn the upper body with nonthrowing shoulder pointing downfield (almost "turning his back to the receiver"), while his hips are still turned towards where he is running. QB should take the ball up in front of his right armpit (for left-handed QBs the left armpit) with his first step, holding it tight with both hands. During the rollout the ball should stay put in front of his right armpit, while the elbows should hang/swing loose to improve balance

Equipment:
Ball, cones and/or line-strip

The scrambling triangular (By Charles Rice, youth football coach from Katy Texas)

Purpose:
To teach and improve the footwork of the QB if he is ever under attack when dropping back into the pocket.

Description:
Have the QB drop back 5 steps with the ball up right showing pass. After the drop (keeping the ball in the passing position) run upward to the right at a 45 degree angle, side shuffle to the left, and drop back at a 45 degree angle again the right end up where he started. After he returns to the start position he then throws a pass to a player or coach standing on the right or left to develope throwing in different direction.

Coaching Points:
(here are the key points you must be aware of)

what ever direction he travels, he must step with that foot first. meaning (if he is going right he must step with the right foot and if he is going left he should step with the left foot first). to make sure he is aware you could put your hand up as a signal for him to throw and this could happen any time in motion (QB must understand the window of opportunity only comes once I teach so you must be prepared)

Option drills (progression)

Purpose:
To teach and improve the QB steps on the option

Description:
Mesh Drill: the first progression will just include a center (you should never practice QB timing without a snap) and the diveback. On command the center snaps the ball to the QB, the diveback runs on his path, while the QB just does his steps to mesh and ride the diveback, and then continues downhill the LOS. Give or keep drill: the next progression is to include a DE who will either slant down the LOS to tackle the diveback or stay to stop the QB. The QB should read the DE and decide whether to give the diveback the ball or keep it. Option pitch drill: the next progression is to include the pitchback. Everything stays the same, except that the QB will pitch the ball to the pitchback when he gets to the end of

the LOS (if he didn't read give before). Full triple option drill: the last progression is to include an OLB, who will either attack the QB or goes on a path to take the pitchback out of the play. The QB then has first to read the DE, and if he read keep then to read the OLB and decide whether to keep the ball or pitch it to the pitchback. Each progression should be started in slow motion and increase speed as the coach is satisfied with the accuracy of the execution of the drill. Don't proceed to the next progression, if the previous isn't well run on full speed.

Coaching Points:
Precision on every step is the key to a successful option. QB has to run along the LOS and cannot fade into the backfield. The read progression of the QB should always be: if in doubt inside first, thus give to the diveback over keep and keep over pitch to the pitchback.

Equipment:
Cones or line-strip, Ball. Grip drop drill

Purpose:
To strengthen the grip and to improve the feel for the ball.

Description:

Hold ball at waist level with one hand. Bring ball up 6 to 8 inches. Let go of ball completely, then regrip it. Alternate right and left hand. Increase speed as you get better.

Coaching Points:
Ball should always be completely controlled, QB shouldn't let go with left hand on exchange before right hand doesn't completely controls the ball (and vice versa).

Equipment:
Ball

Globetrottering

Purpose:
To develop and improve sense of touch.

Equipment:
Ball

Ball isometric

Purpose:
To strengthen the grip.

Coaching Points:
QB should concentrate on just squeezing the ball with his hand, and not cramp up the whole body.

Equipment:
Ball

Comments The drills and program presented are not extensive or long, but rather are realistic in time required to practice and equipment needed to complete. The strength of this program is that it is simple and easy to complete. If what is presented is practiced diligently, constantly, without change, and correctly then you can expect your QBs to improve their techniques of quarterbacking, especially in the area of the drop back, the set-up and the delivery of the ball in passing.

There are many drills that could be used that are not included here. Take a few drills at each workout period and work on these that best suit you and your QBs's abilities. I believe that these are good drills and accomplish much of what you want. Taking everything into consideration, drills are fine, but you still must practice most those things you will be doing in the actual game. Two knee drill

Purpose:
The purpose is to warm up the arm and, at the same time, teach concentration on target and ball release.

Description:
Pair off about 10 yards apart directly in line with each other, kneeling on both knees. Receiver will hold both hands up, giving the QB a target to throw to. Don't throw hard and concentrate on target.

Coaching Points:

Coaching Points:
QB should rotate shoulders and hips as much as possible to get them in a correct position to deliver the ball.

Equipment:
Ball

Normal foot follow through drill

Coaching Points:
If with centers - first priority: secure the ball, then quick drop. Second to last dropstep is shorter, QB should throw immediately after setup step, but never throw off balance.

Equipment:
Ball

Individual pass routes drill

Purpose:
Improve the accuracy and timing of throwing to specific receivers on specific passroutes.

Description:
In addition to working on the passing drills that have been mentioned, it would obviously be to your advantage to throw to an end or a back running any of our individual pass routes. You should work the most on the routes that are the most difficult for the QB to hit consistently. Depending on the level you are coaching, you might have relatively big differences between receivers and how they run their routes (speed/quickness, accuracy). If so, let your QBs call out the receivers name to better remember the individual style of each receiver.

Coaching Points:
Watch for proper timing of QB, don't let him throw off balance just to hit a receiver quicker, rather work on quicker drop, nor let him throw too early.

Equipment:
Ball

Find the open receiver drill

Purpose:
Improve the ability of the QB to scan the whole field and find the open receiver and automatize his footwork.

Description:
Set the QB up on the goal line. Scatter 10 - 15 receivers from sideline to sideline at varied depths ranging from 5 yards to 30 (be creative with your spacing). Have the QB to face his receivers and then the coach, standing behind the QB, will point to one of the receivers. After telling which one will be live, have the QB to simulate the snap and drop 5 - 7 yards and set to throw. All the while he should be scanning the field looking for the raised hand of the designated receiver (the receiver should wait 3 - 5 seconds before raising his hand). Upon seeing this, the QB will have to get into proper throwing position and determine the depth. Repeat this until all receivers have had one pass.

Coaching Points:
The coaching points are the proper use of feet to turn the body (making him ever ready to throw) and the non-stop scanning of the field.

Equipment:

To help the receivers total concentration of picking the ball up in the air, with some distraction.

Description:
Receiver stands in front of net facing QB. The coach stands behind the net and the receiver. He starts the drill by saying "ready" which alerts the QBs to cock their arms. He then points to one QB which alerts him, he is the one to throw to the receiver. On the command "GO", each QB starts his throwing motion, but only the QB that was designated by the coach lets the ball go. The receiver catches the ball, tosses it back to the QB, and the drill starts over. (Receiver should catch about six balls.)

Coaching Points:
Emphasize concentration, and looking ball into hands.

Equipment:
4 Balls

Razzle A

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to help concentration and quick hands.

Description:

Four receivers form a circle about five yards apart. There are two balls used. The drill starts with two of the receivers who are facing each other toss the ball to the receiver on the right, who in turn tosses the ball to his right and etc. After the balls have gone around several times the command "reverse" by the coach, changes the balls to the left. Two groups can be used at the same time.

Coaching Points:
Emphasis is placed on quickness of turning and catching ball in hands.

Equipment:
2 Balls

Razzle B

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to help concentration - eye and hand coordination and to help to develop quick hands.

Description:
Four receivers form a circle about five yards apart. There are four balls used. The drill starts on the command "GO". Two of the receivers, facing each other, start tossing their balls, one high and one low. The other receivers toss their ball at each other but one goes to right side, the other left.

Coaching Points:
Make sure that the receivers who are throwing their balls high and low put a high arch so the other two balls can go through. Start drill slow and increase speed when receivers get the hang of the drill.

Equipment:
4 Balls

Blind ball drill A & B

Purpose:
To help develop the players' quickness in turning their body around for the ball. The purpose is also to emphasize getting their head and shoulder around quickly.

Description:
"A"

A player lines up about ten yards from a coach with his back to the coach. The coach then throws the ball toward the players and when the ball is halfway to the player the coach says "Left" or "Right". The player turns as quickly as possible and tries to catch the ball in his hands.
"B"

Using the same procedure as "A", the player turns just his head and shoulders around as quickly as possible.

Coaching Points:
Emphasize quickness to turning body or head and shoulders around and catching the ball with the hands.

Equipment:
Balls, (Net)

Blurr drill A & B

Purpose:

This drill is designed to help improve the player's concentration on catching the ball.

Description:
"A"

One or two players are lined up eight yards in front of the net facing each other (1 yard apart). The receiver runs about 3/4 speed behind them and tries to catch the ball in his hands. The two players in front wave their hands in front of the ball but do not try to touch it. This drill is run from both sides.
"B"

First player stands with back to net facing coach. Second player stands to one side of player #1 - sideways and face the coach. Drill starts with coach throwing a ball to player #1 with player #2 waving his arms in front of player #1's face, but not touching the ball.

Coaching Points:
Emphasize concentration on catching the ball no matter what the distraction; catch the ball out front and with your hands.

Balls, (Net) Blurr A Blurr B

Over the shoulder drill

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to get the receiver aquainted with catching the ball over his shoulder using different methods.

Description:
For best results, let the players run into the end zone to place emphasis on catching the ball for the touchdown. Players start to run at half speed toward the end zone looking inside for the ball. The ball is thrown in a high arc over the outside shoulder. The receiver has to adjust to the ball by either fading with the ball or turning his hips, shoulders, and head around to catch the ball.

Coaching Points:
Emphasis is placed on body control, quick turning of the head, shoulders, and hips and to keep the arms up when turning around.

Equipment:
Balls Lines or cones to mark endzone boundaries

Back of the endzone drill

Purpose:
The purpose of the drill is to help the players adjust to catching the ball near the end zone.

Description:
Players line up near the end line and run across at half speed. The coach throws the ball high and in front of the players who have to stay as close to the end line as possible and catch the ball.

Coaching Points:
Emphasis is placed on balance and control of the body to make the

Warm up drill

Purpose:
These drills can be used before practice to let receivers warm up and at the same time practice to work on concentrating on catching the ball properly.

Description:
Divide receivers into two groups with a coach on both sides of the field to throw balls. Receivers start in a two point stance and run across the field at half speed. The coach waits until receiver runs ten yards before throwing the ball. The ball should be thrown with a good high arch. The receiver catches the ball mid-way across the field and strides across to the sideline. After each player has gone one time in both lines, the drill is then repeated using one hand and over the head.

Coaching Points:
Emphasis is placed on good running form and not speed. These drills are always run at half speed so as to allow the receiver to warm up his body. The coach should stress warming up and looking the ball into his hands.

Equipment:
4-6 Balls

Net drills These drills can be run with or without a net behind the players. If a net is not available, place someone behind the players to throw back the balls that are missed.

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to improve the players ability to catch difficultly thrown balls.

Description:

Players line up about ten yards from net or designed area for drill. Players run across at 1/2 speed catching the ball and then lining up on the other side. The drill can be repeated several times.

Low balls High balls Behind balls

Coaching Points:

Low balls concentrate on getting hands under the ball and flexing body to get low with the ball rather than spear it. The thumbs should be turned outward. High balls concentrate on getting the arms into position to catch the ball in the hands. Thumbs should be turned inward behind the ball. Behind balls the waist should be turned to get the upper body and hands in position to catch the ball. It may require a complete pivot if the ball is way behind the player. Stress looking ball into hands and making a solid catch each time.

Equipment:
Balls, (Net)

Quick ball

Purpose:
To develop receivers quickness, body control and body lean.

Description:
One player lines up even with the goalpost in his stance. The coach stands ten yards away facing the net with four balls. The coach says "GO" and the player starts running 3/4 speed. When he reaches midway, the ball is thrown to him. The player should catch the ball and run to the other goalpost, toss the ball to the other player and turn quickly, staying in an up position and start back across. The player should catch four straight balls. The coach should throw the ball just in front of the player each time.

Coaching Points:

Emphasize quickness, good body control and body lean.

Equipment:
Balls, (Net)

One hand drill

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to help the player concentrate on making difficult catches with one hand.

Description:
Start the player about five yards from the first pole. The player starts to run about 1/2 speed and catch the ball with one hand. The ball should be thrown with a high arch. This drill is run from both sides.

Coaching Points:
Emphasize looking the ball into the hand.

Equipment:
Balls, (Net)

Tap dance

Purpose:

The purpose of this drill is to help improve the player's ability of catching the ball near the sidelines and planting one foot or two feet in bounds before going out.

Description:
Players will line up about 15 yards from sidelines. On the command "GO" the receiver starts to run 3/4 speed toward the sideline. The coach will throw the ball about five yards from the sideline. The receiver will catch the ball, planting one or two feet in bounds before going out of bounds. The drill is used from left and right side.

Coaching Points:
The coach should emphasize catching the ball and then check the proper feet position in relation to the sideline.

Equipment:
Balls, Straight line or cones

Turn & up

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to help improve the player's ability to catch the ball near a sideline and instead of going out of bounds, turn up field and go.

Description:
Use the same procedure as in the Tap Dance drill. The ball should be thrown 7 to 8 yards in front of the player so he can adjust to turning upfield. The drill is used from both sides.

Coaching Points:
Emphasize catching the ball and then stress the use of good body control to turn upfield, staying in bounds.

Equipment:
Balls, Straight line or cones

TEAM DRILLS
Hustle drill

Purpose:
Conditioning, combined with rehearsal of plays under physical and time stress.

Description:
You need a half football field and all offensive Players for this drill. Spot the ball on the 40 yard-line. The starting unit huddles at midfield and the QB calls the play he got signaled from the coach. The starting unit lines up according to the play called and executes the play. When the ball has been thrown (on a pass play) or the Ballcarrier breaks through the line, the whole offense (not only those executing the play but everybody) sprints down into the endzone and huddles around the ballcarrier. Who will break the huddle with shouting "1-2-3" and the whole team replying "score". Then again 11 players form a huddle at the end of the endzone and execute the next play from the goalline out to the 40-yard-line. Rotate players as much as possible. Do that either a fixed number of plays and time the total time or do it for a fixed time and count the plays completed to control if the players really do hustle and if they improve (e.g. less time for the given number of plays or more plays within the given time)

Coaching Points:
Make sure the plays are still executed correctly and that everybody is really hustling. Get everybody excited about "scoring" on every play. Perfect Play drill

Purpose:
Getting all defensive players to take correct pursuit angle on sweep plays and the like. Also good for conditioning.

Description:
Put a ball in the middle of the field on the 40 yard line. Put a DB on each hashmark at about the 45 yardline. Line up a defense on the ball defending the nearer endzone call a lineup, coverage, and eventually a stunt or blitz. Then another player or a coach will pick up the ball and pitch it to one of the two DB's standing at the hashes, who then will run with the ball paralell to the LOS towards the sideline an then will turn upfield about 3-4 yards inside the sideline. All defensive players will pursue the ballcarrier, and touch him with both hands at his hips, without stopping him.

Coaching Points:
Make sure the players execute their assignments before they start pursuing (i.e. the DL's should penetrate, execute a called stunt. LB's take their correct first steps, etc.). It is also important that the players really touch the ballcarrier's hip with both hands, otherwise they wouldn't be able to make a tackle if it were "live".

If players have problems finding the right angle, slow it down to walking speed. (nobody is allowed to run!) Punt-/Kickoff-Cover drill

Purpose:
To teach and practice discipline in staying in position on Punt- and Kickoff-Coverage.

Description:
1. Form two lines of players at one sideline in an appropiate split. Put one player as the returner on the opposite side's numbers or halfway between opposite side's hashes and the sideline. 2. A coach or a QB at the sideline calls out the same cadence as on the puntteam and throws the ball in a high arc to the returner - you can also have your Punter punt or Kicker kick the ball to the returner, but if they are not very constant and accurate it's getting more time-consuming. 3. From each line one player sprints 100% to the opposite side's hashmark and break down, while the returner catches the ball and stops. 4. As soon as both players made their breakdown, the coach gives the returner a 'GO' call. The returner runs parallel to the sideline with about 50% speed changeing directions after 5 to 10 yards. 5. The responsibilities of the cover-players is to keep the returner between them. The player the returner is running to has 'fast-read', he moves fast in front of the returner. The player the returner is running away from has 'slow-read' he moves slower behind the returner. When the returner changes directions the responsibilities switch. 6. After two or three direction changes the returner tries break through between the two cover-players who will perform a form-tackle.

Coaching Points:
1. It is important, that the cover-players keep their distance constant while sprinting to the 2nd hashmark and that they arrive there at the same time if possible. (It's a good idea to pair them up like they are on punt or kickoff). 2. It is also very important, that the cover-players keep their hips and shoulder parallel to the returner and the returner must not get outside either of them. The Superbowl Drill (By Coach Tony Basile)

Purpose:
To bring in some competition and start scrimmaging with small groups.

Description:
1. mark a playing field about 7 by 15 yards.

2. build teams of 4 Offense: 3 Linemen, 1 RB Defense: 2 or 3 Linemen, and 2 or 1 LB 3. each team gets 3 drives of 4 tries to score. 4. if a team looses twice it's out, round robin.

Coaching Points:
1. Make sure you call and penalize all penalties. 2. Assistant coaches should critique only individual mistakes but also point out things done well. But not while the team is competing.

Equipment:
Ball and cones

Halfline Drill (By Coach Tony Basile)

Purpose:
Makes Scrimmaging possible for small teams with limited number of players.

Description:
1. 2. 3. 4. Line up Offense from C through TE plus QB and RB's. Line up accordingly half defense including DB's. Offense runs plays to that side. You can run this drill as a pursuit drill (no contact) or play stop (full or thud contact)

Coaching Points:
make sure all player get the correct reads and allignment are correct, especially that the defense doesn't cheat because they know which side the play will go.

Equipment:
Ball

Inside Run Drill

Purpose:
Work on runplays for Offense as well as for Defense.

Description:
1. 2. 3. 4. Offense without WRs Defense without DBs On Offense run all your runplays. On Defense show all your fronts, stunts and blitzes.

Coaching Points:
Emphasize correct execution of assignments and on full speed execution to get the timing down.

Equipment:
Ball

7 on 7 Passing Drill

Purpose:
On Offense work on passing game and simultaniously work on Defense Passcoverage.

Description:
1. Line up Offense without Line (eventually with C to give him and the QB some extra reps on snapping). 2. Defense lines up without DL. 3. On Offense run all your passplays. 4. On Defense run all your coverages including blitzes.

Coaching Points:
Make sure the QB doesn't hold the ball longer than he could in full scrimmage or game. Blitzing LB should be picked up by RB, if not due to assignment he should run by the QB. So you still can see if the coverage is doing ok.

2 on 2 Run Drill (By Don Haug, Don Haug - Vitoria Riders (Bantam 13-15 year olds))

Purpose:

This drill works on many aspects of the game blocking, tackling, running and most of all team work.

Description:
place 4 sets of 2 cones or bags 7 yards apart across the field and 5 yards apart down the field. From right to left Linebackers at the 1st bag D-line at the 2nd bag o-line at the 3rd bag and RBs at the 4th bag. At the whistle all four players run from the one side to the other and backagain in their own lane, once they return to the starting side they explode to the middle of the area. O-line will attempt to block D-line, d-line attempt to either destroy the block or slide pass.Linebackers reads the RB and move to the tackle. RB reads his block and runs to daylight.

Coaching Points:
The position coaches stress the use of correct technique of their unit.

Some comments from Coach Don Haug

We find the players talking strategy while waiting their turns. The area coaches coach the players while the drill is going on. We only have 30 players to work with so we use this all in one drill a lot, we find this is very rewarding time. This may not be a new drill but it's one this Canadian coach would not be without.

Alley Drill (By Craig Patterson, Assistant Coach of the Junior Titans, PeeWee, Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada)

Purpose:
Defense: Practicing and improving to keep the right persude relation to a ballcarrier running a sweep paralell to the LOS. Offense: Practicing and improving to run a sweep and to cut upfield decisive and to take on a tackler.

Description:

Teams Line up opposite, parallel with cones, players slide down line as it becomes their turn to run the ball. Use a 5 yard deep lane with about a 4yard width. You can run them in a number of patterns ( by position, by size, but I think the best is to do offense at random but let the defense choose who will defend against each player, let the captains of the defense decide). The offensive player runs down the line and chooses which hole to run through and the defensive player must react to his movement and stop him from crossing the line on the defensive side. Fast players would run to the end, quick the first, agile wherever, if a tackle is made then the defense scores, if the offense gets the ball past the line they score. The offensive play must stay within the hole that they choose but may spin or deke in that hole, if the tackler takes the player outside of the lane it is considered a tackle. You can have both teams run the ball as the defense sometime needs to run and the offense to tackle. The ball carriers cut to the hole must be decisive with no stutterstepping or reversing direction. This is a drill to practice cutting to the goal line. One coach to watch the line and call a score and to whistle a play dead, one to signal go!

Coaching Points:
Check for good technique of the tacklers but also of the ball carriers. Make also sure that the ball carriers understand that in full scrimmage they wouldn't have the time to stutterstep or reverse direction. If you want to add an extra kink to it give extra points for the defense for forcing and/or recovering fumbles.

1. All 5 offensive linemen get in their stances with proper alignment and splits for a pass. 2. A defender lines up across from each lineman. 3. On the command by the coach one defender will rush and one offensive lineman will protect. 4. The other 4 linemen will work on their pass sets and pouch as the defender across from them will rush on the snap and stop at the contact point. 5. Rotate through, so all 5 linemen get a live repetition, then repeat (You can also simulate various defensive alignments)

Coaching Points: Equipment:

Football and a standup bag Use the Bird dog drill on the Agilities Page to work on getting into a pass set. Must concentrate on proper foot position. Three on one

Purpose:
To teach proper technique of the pass set vs. various defensive alignments

Description:
1. One offensive lineman gets into his stance. Three defensive players align across from him. One is head up and the other two are shaded on his outside and inside shoulders. 2. Starting from his outside and working one at a time to the inside alignment each defender will start his rush and the offensive lineman will set and punch using a kick set, short set or power set in accordance with the defenders alignment. 3. The drill is started by the coach's command using your cadence. The defender stops when the offensive player completes his punch.

4. Coach should position himself where the QB will set so the offensive lineman and defenders have a visual perspective of the area to protect.

Equipment:
Ball for Centers Mirror drill

Purpose:
To develop the ability to move and maintain the proper relationship with a moving defender.

Description:
1. Two linemen face each other with the offensive player in his stance 2. They are about 1 yard apart and have the two cones on each side of them with about 5 yards between the cones. 3. On command the offensive player snaps to a set position and begins to shuffle in relation to the defender who is working laterally back & forth between the cones. 4. Drill should last 5 seconds and you should evaluate your linemen on set position, shuffle technique and relationship with defender.

Coaching Points: Equipment:

2 cones or 2 bags

DL
4-pt wave drill

Purpose:
The purpose of this drill is to get the players used to stay low and keep their feet moving all of the time. It also strengthens the shoulders and arms.

Description:
Players get into a good 4-pt stance about 2 to 3 yrds apart. The coach stands in front of them, holding a ball on the ground. The coach shouts out a cadence, and when he moves the ball they start moving their feet, watching the coach, and shuffling into the indicated direction, always keeping their hands on the ground. On command the players will sprint past the coach. As a variation you can include seatrolls, i.e. every change of direction begins with a seatroll to the new direction. Instead of a command and the final sprint, the coach can drop the football and have the players recover the fumble.

Coaching Points:
Feet and hands should always be at a wide base. Quick change of direction is more important than speed on the lateral movement.

Off the ball

Purpose:
To develop quick reaction on movement of the ball for defensive line.

Description:
Defensive linemen assume good stance on designated line. On movement of football, defensive line comes off the ball with good pad level, sprinting 5 yards. Coach shall call out different signals to train defensive linemen to move only on movement of football.

Coaching Points:
Proper stance, weight forward, pad level, good key on football.

Shuffle with medicine ball

Purpose:
To develop quickness with the feet while keeping the pad level of defensive line down, and the use of the hands of a low cut block.

Description:
Defensive lineman assumes good football position, on coaches command the defensive lineman steps over dummies, leading with the front foot with his eyes up and pads down, as lineman comes off of last dummy, the coach throws a medicine ball at DL feet, while the DL uses his hands to defend himself of ball.

Coaching Points:
Pad level, quick feet, eyes up, push level on ball Read the head drill

Purpose:
To teach the DL to read and recognize the type of block of the opposing OL by his first headmovement, and condition the correct response.

Description:
This is a progression drill, first have 3 DL at a time lineup facing the coach, who will do the head motions. Have the DL react to the motions quickly. The second progression will be to pair up the DL, and a coach standing behind the designated DL signaling the kind of block and snapcount to the designated OL. Have the DL react to the movement of the opposing OL. The third progression will be to line up one DL to three OL to work on correct reaction on away- and combination blocks (i.e. trap- or double-team blocks). Again the coach will stand behind the DL and signal block and snapcount. (To extend this you also can include linebackers.)

Coaching Points:
Make sure DL focus on a point of the head/helmet. Have them react as quick as possible, work more on quickness and correct technique, than on overpowering the blocker.

Read
Purpose: The purpose of this drill is to improve the reaction of the defensive lineman to the movement of the offensive lineman.

Description:
Set up 3 cones in a triangle about 10 yards apart. Put two linemen facing each other in the middle between two cones, put a designated ballcarrier at the third cone. The player facing the ballcarrier will be the defender, the other player the OL. The coach should stand behind the DL and signaling the direction and the snapcount. On the command, the ballcarrier runs in a straight line to the designated cone, while the OL blocks accordingly. The DL reacts to the movement of the OL, controls & escapes the OL and makes the

tackle before the ballcarrier reaches the cone. (After the DL got comfortable with the drill, you might bring in 'real' OL and Runningbacks to increase intensity and speed.)

Coaching Points:
Defenders shoulders and hips should stay square to LOS, check for proper hand and arm technique to control and escape OL, feet should be moving all the time and never get close together. Equipment: 3 cones, 1 ball if run with offensive personnel

Contain drill
Purpose: Drill to teach the proper technique of playing the outside contain for DE and OLB.

Description:
Mark an offensive line with cones or use a line-strip, have a participating player lining up as the offensive last man on the line (LMOL) and a RB or WR lining up in the backfield to run sweeps. Now put the contain man in his position, on command have the backfield player run parallel to the LOS to the contain man's side and only turn upfield outside the contain man, while the offensive LMOL tries to block the contain man to the inside. The contain man should force the ballcarrier wide, never letting him get outside.

Coaching Points:
Make sure the defender first gets into the backfield and only when he recognizes that the play goes wide charges to the outside, always staying outside the ballcarrier. Make sure he's not to wide outside the ballcarrier, and rather have him give some ground than letting the ballcarrier to his outside. Equipment: Ball and cones or line-strip

Tackling progression drill

Purpose:
To teach and improve proper tackling technique

Description:
Pair players up along a line with about 2 to 3 yards apart. 1. Fit

On command the designated defenders walk up to their partner and into a fit position. They should stay in that position until the coach checked and possibly corrected the position. 2. Fit and lift On command the designated defenders walk up to their partner and into a good fit position. On the next command they follow through, rolling their hips and lifting their partner and taking him back a few steps. 3. Form tackle Partners should be about 5 yards apart. On command the designated offender jogs toward the defender. The defender meets him in proper tackling position and performs a form tackle. Have offenders jog in a 45 angle also. For each progression step: start off one after the other, and as the players get better, let them execute simultaneously. Do right and left shoulder.

Coaching Points:
Head should always be up when making contact. Tackler should drive through ballcarrier, and roll his hips to lift the ballcarrier properly. 1. Fit Feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, back straight, head up, arms around butt, shoulder at belt-buckle. 2. Fit and lift Additional: hips should roll, the lift should be caused by the rolling hips and the extension of the legs. The offenders should assist the lift by hopping up on the second command. Stress the importance of leverage. 3. Form tackle Same as above, make sure the form tackle will be done in one fluid motion. Offenders should not change direction or speed, nor fight the tackle. Increase speed as players get better but not intensity of contact.

LB
High knees

Purpose:
To develop agility, flexibility and footwork for linebackers

Description:
On command LB assumes proper football position. Second command LB runs forward through bags with high knee action.

Coaching Points:
Player drives off of proper foot. (Rt/Lt) Elminate false steps. Gain maximum ground on 1st step. Good high knee action with lengthening of stride. Equipment: 4-5 square bags

Wave drill
Purpose: Developing quick changes of direction, and quick reactions.

Description:
Players get into a good football stance about 2 to 3 yrds apart. The coach stands in front of them, holding a ball on the ground. The coach shouts out a cadence, and when he moves the ball they start moving their feet, watching the coach, and shuffling into the indicated direction, if the coach shows pass, they drop; if he shows run, they come forward. On command the players will sprint past the coach. As a variation you can include seatrolls (only lateral movement), i.e. every change of direction begins with a seatroll to the new direction. Instead of a command and the final sprint, the coach can drop the football and have the players recover the fumble, or throw a more or less interceptable pass and have them run it back.

Coaching Points:
Feet should always be moving and never cross on lateral movement. Players should always maintain a wide base. Quick change of direction is more important than speed on lateral movement.

Square drills
Purpose:
To work on footwork on all phases of linebacker play.

Description:
Set up a square of about 6 by 6 yards with the cones. The player lines up at one cone facing away from the square. On signal the player runs to the next cone, like on a straight zone drop, then he runs forward in an 45-degree angle to the next cone, from which he drops again straight back to the last cone, from there he runs to the starting cone, on this way the coach throws him the ball to intercept it. When all players are through, start over except do 45-degree drops and straight-forward runs. You also can include shuffle passages.

Coaching Points:
Look for proper foot-technique at the change of direction. This should be a technique drill not a conditioning drill. Equipment: Four cones and a ball.

Piano drill
Purpose:
To develop body control, flexibility and reaction to a low block

Description:
LB assume position with outside foot slightly back. On command LB shuffles back two steps in football position & then shuffles forward to line touching line with both hands to simulate taking on blocker. Repeat two more repetitions. Then flip to other side.

Coaching Points:
Player must keep eyes up and outside leg back. Chest over knees and chin over toes.

Shed and throw drill

To develop proper position to defeat potential blocker and make the tackle.

Description:
On three men sled LB's assume proper football position one yard from their sled. On command they attack sled. A ball carrier is positioned 8 yards away and on command

reacts in 45 angle in direction coach requests. LB's working feet and hands throw sled and accelerate to ball carrier.

Coaching Points:
Have LB's place hands properly. Maintain leverage, separation and foot movement. Once in proper position find ball carrier, throw/rip and get to ball carrier.

Equipment:
3-men sled Ball for Ballcarrier

Read the play and react drills

Purpose:
To teach the linebackers to read the block of the offensive lineman and recognize the play and react properly.

Description:
Align 4 players as three OL-men plus a FB, put two players as DL on the outside two OL and a LB on the middle OL. Signal the offensive players their assignments and a snap count. On the snap count the offensive players carry out their blocks and the linebacker reacts accordingly. Make sure all linebackers get a sufficient number of repetitions. Start off at half speed, and pick up the speed as players get better. include DL personnel if you don't have enough linebackers.

Coaching Points:
Make sure offensive personnel carries out its assignments correctly. Linebackers have to be in proper stance and alignment before the "snap". Emphasize the correct movement while reading the block/play and the correct reaction to the read play. Don't allow any sloppiness on either side. The intensity of contact should be low, correct and quick reaction is the purpose of this drill.

Tackling progression drills

Tackler moves when ball carrier does and drives through outside number and gets his number across ball carriers outside number. Tackler drives feet and ballcarrier back 2 yards.

Coaching Points:
Tackler must close distance keeping on ball carriers inside half to take away cutback. Tackler must work form low plane to high plane. Hit on the rise. (For minimum contact work in 5 yards square)

Goalline tackling drill

Purpose:
To teach and improve tackling technique to deny any gain after contact (i.e. in shortyardage situations.

Description:

Place two cones three to five yards apart on any given line, representing the goalline. Place one linebacker with his heels on the goalline. The ballcarrier (another linebacker or a runningback) lines up 2-3 yards in front of him, holding a ball. On command the ballcarrier starts and tries to break the plane between the cones, while the linebacker has to prevent this. This drill should be run at full speed and therefore not the first tackling drill of the practice. If working against the runningbacks you can make it more competetive by keeping score and have the "loosers" do some extra sprints or pushups.

Coaching Points:
Tackler must make good solid contact having his whole body in front of ballcarrier. Tackler must get under ballcarrier and work from low plane to high plane. Hit on the rise. Make sure tackler makes good use of his arms (wrap-up) to prevent ballcarrier from falling forward.

Constantly stress to the defender to move with him and stay broken down (knees bent and ready for him to try to run him over). Step #2 Next blow the whistle and have the ball carrier and run at the defender full speed or walk to him half speed. Then have the defender react to what ever the ball carrier does like if he goes full speed lay a lick on him or if he goes half speed go half speed and thud him or hit lightly. Step #3 Next have them switch such as ball carrier is now the defender and the defender is now the ball carrier. Go through this with all of your DB's and if you have an odd number of

them have one who has already been pose as the ball carrier since this is a defensive position.

Coaching Points:
Defender must always keep his balance and his hips square.

Catching Drill
