PROJECT MANAGEMENT
APPLICATION TO OIL & GAS UPSTREAM ACTIVITIES
OBJECTIVES
To provide participants with a broader understanding of project management, its objectives,
roles and techniques.
The course will present the constraints, challenges and industry practices in connection
with the hydrocarbon field development from Discovery to First Oil/Gas. It will be illustrated
by the presentation of major development projects and the projection of several projects
movies and/or pictures. Practical case studies are illustrating the magisterial course.
COURSE CONTENT
PETROLEUM ECONOMICS AND FIELD EVALUATION PROCESS 0.5 day
Introduction to the main elements used in connection with the economics in the petroleum industry: reserves,
associations, economic analysis, petroleum contracts
Field evaluation process from discovery to decision to develop: Field evaluation, Preliminary studies (feasibility and
conceptual study – Example of Dunbar project), Front End Engineering, Pre-project activities and project execution
plan, key documents, specifications, HSE fundamentals (HAZOP, Technical review), decision to develop
Fundamentals of cost estimating
PROJECT ORGANIZATION 0.5 day
Project key issues, characteristics, and objectives
Different Oil & Gas project organizations - Relationship between the project content, and it’s technical challenges, the
contractor’s market conditions, on one hand, and the sponsors, contractor’s organization etc on the other hand
Client’s organization for Basic Engineering, Detail Engineering, Procurement, Yard Fabrication, Onshore Works,
Offshore Works, Commissioning
Role of project leader and communication within the project team

CONTRACTUAL STRATEGY AND CONTRACTS 1 day

Quality aspects of a project: Quality assurance, Quality control characteristics and principles, Quality assurance

Operation and maintenance philosophies
Quality control to be implemented during each phase of a project: Basic Engineering, Detail Engineering,
Procurement, Construction, Transportation, Pre-commissioning, Commissioning
Constraints to be considered: Reference documents, Project specifications, Specific requirements, Methods, tools and
