Edmonds Learning Style Identification Exercise
(ELSIE)
The following words are to be used with Harry Reinert's Learning
Style Identification Exercise. Instructions for administering
the exercise follow:

A. Inform participants that you will be reading 50 words, and

that for each word, they are to circle a number according to the
following code:

1. You immediately have a mental picture of some object or

activity.
2. You immediately have a picture of a word spelled out.
3. You have no immediate mental picture; the sound of the word
carries the meaning.
4. You immediately experience a physical or emotional
feeling about the word.

B. Inform participants that you will begin with two sample

words to demonstrate the process. They should not circle any
numbers here, but should think about which ones they would
circle if the words were part of the exercise.

First sample word: sink (Ask a few participants for their

first reactions; some may see a kitchen or bathroom sink; some
may see a ship or boat sinking; some may see either sink or sync
spelled out; some may feel either "in sync" or "out of sync";
some may "just know" from hearing the word.)

Second sample word: hold (Again, ask a few participants for

their first reactions; some may have a feeling of being held;
some may see a ship's hold; some may see the word spelled out;
and some may "just know" from hearing the word.)

C. Read the words consecutively, without enumerating them.

Provide a number for every fifth word to ensure that everyone is
at the right place; e.g., number 5 is . . ., number 10 is . . .,
etc.
