Wolmers Trust High School for Girls COMPUTER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT 5TH FORM INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY COURSE OUTLINE

2012 2013 INTRODUCTION Information Technology has evolved over the past five decades in response to the need for more efficient techniques to manage the significantly increased volume and sophistication of the knowledge reservoir of mankind. In a world characterised by technological innovation and computerised responses to situations in the work place and in the wider society, all citizens will need to have practical exposure to the techniques of Information Technology in order to bridge the widening gap between Caribbean nations and the developed countries and provide our citizens with the best chances for survival and growth in this new age. (Extract from CSEC Information Technology Syllabus) ORGANIZATION OF THE COURSE This course is allotted 4 sessions per week which is equivalent to 4 hours per week. The sessions are assigned as follow: 1 hour : Theory 1 hour : Productivity Tools 1 hour : SBA 1 hour : Problem Solving and Programming SCHOOL BASED ASSESSMENT (SBA) Preparation of SBAs will commence in the second week of September. Teacher-student consultation based on the SBA will take place within scheduled class time (1 hr per week). SBA submission deadlines are as follows: Components Database Spreadsheet Word Processing Pseudocode Pascal Program

Database marks will contribute to 50% of the six-weekly grade and ALL SBA components covered in Term 1 will contribute to 30% of the Mock Exam grade.

TERM ONE (September to December) Note: Week one is revision week using fourth form end of year examination questions. THEORY APPLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Ways in which information can be misused. Appropriate hardware and software to meet the particular needs of a given application Current and emerging technological trends The impact of Information Technology on job skills and careers The roles of various personnel in computer-related professions PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS WORD PROCESSING Microsoft Word Editing features in the preparation of a document Commonly available features (Page numbers, page breaks, text alignment, wordwrap, margins, tabs, page length, default settings, font size) Formatting features for the preparation of a document Headers, footer, footnotes and endnotes Combining documents Performing block operations Using columns and tables appropriately. Applying appropriate character formatting features Using search and replace functions appropriately Using mail-merge facilities Using spell-check Importing documents PROGRAMMING PROBLEM SOLVING Representing algorithms as pseudocode and flowcharts (using trace tables to ensure correctness): o For loop o While Loop Manipulating data in an array (using trace tables to ensure correctness): o Compare array against variables o Structure of arrays o Creating an array o Reading from and writing to arrays o Traversing arrays o Linear search on arrays

TERM TWO (January to April) THEORY INTERNET AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY Data communications and networks Distinguish among Internet, Intranet and Extranet Concepts associated with Internet Measures to secure a data and maintain data integrity. INFORMATION PROCESSING Concept of data and information. Characteristics and functions of Information Processing. Sources of data in specified application area. Methods of validation and verification of information. Using appropriate validation and verification checks given a particular scenario. Methods of file organization and file access. Appropriate file organization for particular applications. PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS WEB PAGE DESIGN Front Page PROGRAMMING PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION

Concept, reason and planning a website. Creating simple webpages. Creating hyperlinks Testing a website Publishing a website.

Low level and high level programming languages. Generation of programming languages. Steps associated with implementing a program. Terms and concepts used in programming. Elementary data types Variables and constants Data manipulation in PASCAL Using Control Structures in PASCAL Manipulating data in a list using PASCAL Documenting programs and its importance Performing tests and checks on programs to verify correctness. The concept, importance and features of internal documentation Practice of past paper questions and questions formulated by teachers.

In term three, revision by means of past paper questions and questions from various textbooks will be done.
