TX- 354 Sewn Product Engineering Course Outline

Theory: 3, Lab: 1, Total credit hours: 4 Course Description:


This course outline is designed to make students familiar with basic knowledge related to clothing classifications, clothing functions and manufacturing process from cutting to packing. This also includes clothing quality control system at different stages of manufacturing, final inspection, audit and sampling method.

Course Syllabus:
Module 1: Preproduction Operations It includes the comprehensive description of purpose of preproduction operations (PPO), concept of optimum material utilization, planning marker making, spreading and cutting, cut order planning; its responsibilities, variables and fabric information. Module 2: Marker Making Types and Dimensions Defining marker making its types their advantages and disadvantages, plotting and functioning of plotters, computerized marker making and its effectiveness. Dimensions of markers and their usage according to garment style, size and fabric type. Module 3: Lay Planning and Types of Lay Plans Defining lay planning and types of lay plans. Importance of lay planning that how it affects production costs. Module 4: Marker Efficiency Explaining marker efficiency and its importance. How it is determined, fabric utilization and factors affecting it; like fabric characteristics, characteristics of pattern pieces, grain orientation and fabric utilization standards Module 5: Spreading Process and Spreading Modes This module conducts a detailed study of Spreading process and all the modes of Spreading, factors determining the mode, Spreading quality, fabric defects, ply tension, slack tension, flatness of spread, ply alignment and static electricity. Module 6: Spreading Quality and factors affecting it: A comprehensive study about the quality aspects in spreading process, as well as the factors that affect the quality parameters will also be discussed.

Module 7: Set-up for Spreading: All the prerequisites for spreading and the precautionary measures are included that determine a defect free process. Module 8: Spreading Equipment: All the spreading equipments like fabric control devices, fabric cutting devices, spreading surfaces and spreading machines will be studied. Module 9: Spreading Cost: All the factors that contribute towards the spreading cost and their control procedures will be discussed. Module 10: Cutting and Cutting Quality: Accuracy of cut parts and cutting pitch will be studied. As well as condition of cut edges and factors affecting cutting quality are included. Module 11: Types of Cutting: Cutting types like manual cutting and automatic cutting will be explained. Module: Stitches: Stitch properties, stitch size and factors that affect stitch choice will be studied in detail. Aims: The aim of this course is to; Provide participant with good knowledge of all the preparatory processes, Enabling them to understand the current needs of industry, Provide participant with a comprehensive knowledge about the apparel industry, responsibilities of a manager and all the key concepts involved in apparel manufacturing industry, Equipping the participants with the valuable data so that they can compete the industry in their futures and meet all the requirements of apparel industry.

Learning outcomes: On successful completion of this subject participant will have comprehensive knowledge of Sewn Product Engineering. They would be able to meet all the requirements of apparel industry. This course will induce great potential in the participants so that in future they could perform their duties well. After completing this course they will be able to answer any question about all the preparatory processes and their importance in apparel industry.

Learning and teaching method: The course is delivered through variety of methods; Tutorial Industrial Visits Assignments Journal readings Course requirements: 1. Assignment: Participants are obligated to submit three assignments during the course of semester. The purpose of assignment is to provide participant the knowledge of modern research in merchandising techniques and challenges in the modern era. Assessment scheme: Assessment will be based on the evaluation of the following; Comprehensively sourced research papers and books relevant to the subject. Idea generation in response to the brief. Interpretation of idea through report. Investigating issues relevant to the idea.

2. Quizzes Six quizzes will be taken during the course of semester. The questions will be objective type. The purpose of quizzes is to help participants keeping themselves current with the course content. This also helps tutor to access the knowledge of participants being presented in the lecture.

3. Exams There will be two exams; mid term exam after 8 weeks and end term exam after 16 weeks. The questions in both exams will be subjective type. Results will be presented in following grades.
