1. CLOZE TEST - WRITE ONE WORD ONLY FOR EACH GAP Growing or Going? Africas forests are disappearing at an alarming rate; a fact that (1) environmentalist you care to name will confirm. The reason, some will assert, is population growth: people are bad news (2) trees. Yet the picture that emerges (3) a growing body of fieldwork in Africa is more complex and considerably (4) glum. It now appears that far fewer trees have been cut down than (5) previously suspected to be the case, the reason (6) that earlier estimates of tree numbers were inaccurate. The loss (7) forests has indeed been rapid but (8) so, the rate of loss is only about 40% of (9) commonly supposed. Some environmentalists maintain that large tracts of supposedly undisturbed forest were actually regrown on areas which had (12) been intensively cultivated. More intriguingly, researchers have drawn (13) evidence that forests are actually on (14) increase in some parts of Africa. Their fieldwork indicates that farmers often (15) with the bush fires that would otherwise destroy vegetation whilst deliberately preserving or transplanting trees that provide fruit, shelter or medicine.

They are, (6) real souvenirs, encapsulations not only of the place, but of your time in the place.
