Global warming? No, actually we're cooling, claim scientists

A cold Arctic summer has led to a record increase in the ice cap, leading experts to predict a period of global cooling.

There has been a 60 per cent increase in the amount of ocean covered with ice compared to this time last year, they equivalent of almost a million square miles. In a rebound from 2012's record low an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia's northern shores, days before the annual re-freeze is even set to begin. The Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific has remained blocked by pack-ice all year, forcing some ships to change their routes. A leaked report to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) seen by the Mail on Sunday, has led some scientists to claim that the world is heading for a period of cooling that will not end until the middle of this century. If correct, it would contradict computer forecasts of imminent catastrophic warming. The news comes several years after the BBC predicted that the arctic would be ice-free by 2013.

Despite the original forecasts, major climate research centres now accept that there has been a pause in global warming since 1997. The original predictions led to billions being invested in green measures to combat the effects of climate change. The changing predictions have led to the UN's climate change's body

holding a crisis meeting, and the the IPCC is due to report on the situation in October. A pre-summit meeting will be held later this month. But the leaked documents are said to show that the governments who fund the IPCC are demanding 1,500 changes to the Fifth Assessment Report - a three-volume study issued every six or seven years as they claim its current draft does not properly explain the pause. The extent to which temperatures will rise with carbon dioxide levels and how much of the warming over the past 150 years, a total of 0.8C, is down to human greenhouse gas emissions are key issues in the debate. The IPCC says it is 95 per cent confident that global warming has been caused by humans - up from 90 per cent in 2007 according to the draft report. However, US climate expert Professor Judith Curry has questioned how this can be true as that rather than increasing in confidence, uncertainty is getting bigger within the academic community. Long-term cycles in ocean temperature, she said, suggest the world may be approaching a period similar to that from 1965 to 1975, when there was a clear cooling trend. At the time some scientists forecast an imminent ice age. Professor Anastasios Tsonis, of the University of Wisconsin, said: "We are already in a cooling trend, which I think will continue for the next 15 years at least. There is no doubt the warming of the 1980s and 1990s has stopped. The IPCC is said to maintain that their climate change models suggest a pause of 15 years can be expected. Other experts agree that natural cycles cannot explain all of the recorded warming.

How convenient ! The IPCC has not found that their models predicted a 15 year pause. Strange, they didn't seem to have done that before it happened. In fact, a decade ago the models were practically screaming that temperatures were on a neverending annual increase that could only be stopped by draconion governmental controls on every form of energy use.

There may be short spell of cooling, but the long-term trend is set fast for warming. I like the NASA site - they have no axe to grind, and it is a beautifully designed website which always helps. Here is the update for May-August 2013, not a record year for dwindling but the overall trend continues to be downward, showing a sustained decline when averaged out over the decades: http://www.nasa.gov/content/go... "The icy cover of the Arctic Ocean was measured at 2.25 million square miles (5.83 million square kilometers) on Aug. 21. For comparison, the smallest Arctic sea ice extent on record for this date, recorded in 2012, was 1.67 million square miles (4.34 million square kilometers), and the largest recorded for this date was in 1996, when ice covered 3.16 millions square miles (8.2 million square kilometers) of the Arctic Ocean." Here is an item about the rich breeding ground for small fry now occuring underneath the Arctic Ice due to steady and prolonged warming: http://www.nasa.gov/topics/ear... A silver lining, indeed, like a new tropical rainforest suddenly appearing on land (and maybe they will too!). First crop of British melons in Shropshire this year, too.

This article and the comments only prove ONE thing - Those that have taken sides in the debate will NOT be swayed one way or the other! Sad really. Agendas are being pushed involving tons of MONEY on both sides. Real, honest, scientific, fact-based debate is being muddied with spin, red herrings, mis-directions, false associations, and blatant lies. Climate science is far too complex to shrink down into a few hundred words or a short 3 minute TV piece. Entire BOOKS are written to explain these concepts! These things evolve over DECADES, not hours. Oversimplifying them doesn't do anyone any good at all. I personally believe Governments should NOT make such an aggressive attempt to be "proactive" or "preventative" in these things. We need to let them play out and ADAPT as we go. We must be vigilant and willing to adapt QUICKLY. But attempting to be "proactive" is questionable at best. We SHOULD educate and encourage - even Incentivize - conservation, but mandating it and penalizing for it is not the way. We MUST encourage science to develop more clean tech and ways to isolate and reduce pollutants. We Do NOT need carbon taxes and cutting our nose to spite our face. We also DON'T need to be fighting each other instead of observing what is happening and ACTING!

Wow, the comments on this article seem pretty much like an echo chamber . . . people looking for any scrap of data that leans toward supporting their political position.

As a trained statistician, I can say with confidence (little statistical punnery), that it's complex and not reducible to a 400 word article in a general news publication. You can pick at your favorite political conspiracy theory as much as you like, but I doubt you're getting anywhere nearer an understanding of the science involved.

where do we go for our refund for the money forcibly extracted and spent on these lies? where is the prosecution of the madoffs of these groups-- far worse than madoffs, because we were given no choice whether our money was 'invested'. when will people stand up to the authoritarian left and their intimidation and namecalling tactics when you disagree?

Arctic ice data gained through ice cores for the past 450 thousand years have show large and continual changes in ice coverages. Rapid changes in average global temperatures and polar ice coverages appear to be nothing new. At its maxim extent the polar ice cap reached as far south as southern Britain 10,000 year ago before going into rapid retreat at the end of the last ice age. Earth erratic orbit and shifting axis is know to have caused the frequent ice ages and warm periods in the past but today it is not even considered a factor. Instead CO2 is hyped as a supper green house gas even though it is a poor absorber and reemitter of radiation therefore pretty useless as a green house gas. Contradictionary data. In the southern hemisphere the Antarctica ice sheet is expanding in tandem with lower average temperatures, Glaciers across the world are growing and not contracting as predicted. The "scientist" behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders." There has been no notable increase in average global temperatures for the past 15 years. How much extra tax is being extracted on the weight of this pseudoscience? Al Gore is heavily invested in heavily subsidized environmental tech companies. How many of our politicians also have vested interest in maintaining the myth. Ice_Age_Temperature_Rev.png (574379)

Global warming replaced ozone which replaced acid rain which replaced nuclear annihilation as the imaginary scare of the day with which practical politicians terrify the life out of the population. Never fear; another one will emerge, or an old one will be recycled. , as each was is revealed successively as a fraud.

Sorry? All of those were legitimate, it's just that through sensible legislation we were able to reverse the trends. The ozone layer had and still has a large hole in it over Antartica. This is evidenced by high rates of skin cancer down under due to the decreased ozone protection. We know that human activity was responsible for the hole and we curtailed the use of CFCs, lo and behold the hole is now closing. Acid rain happened and still happens in some places. The effects and reasons behind are well understood. We restricted the source of the problem and once again we managed to mitigate the issue (in the west at least). Then there was nuclear war, obviously any fears of this were unfounded, the peace and tranquility during the cold war is well documented......

The IPCC will never come clean on the data, their very livelihoods depend on trying to scare us into higher taxation which the supporting Governments love. ...So warming has "paused" since 97 yet carbon continues to rise, thus there can be no correlation between the two any more than Mammoth farts melted the last ice age.
