Godfathers of Punk

Punk is a rock music genre that originated between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Punk was and still is the music of rebellion against politics, authority, unjust rules, bigoted religious groups or anything else that frustrates the common man. This quality of punk rock made it easier for the people, especially teenagers to relate to it. Even though in the beginning most of the punk bands didnt get much commercial success, they left an imprint on the world of music that was unquestionable. The five bands that dominated the kingdom of punk rock in the early years and basically invented punk are: 1.

The Ramones were formed in Queens, United States in 1974. They are one of the oldest
punk bands, some group even believe them to be the first punk band. They had a successful 22 years of career which ended in 1996. Even though their commercial success wasnt much, their influence on modern day punk is irrefutable. Other than being the godfathers of punk music, together with others such as the Sex Pistols and The Clash, the Ramones have a unique style and sound, together with the most interesting lead voice.

The Offspring were formed in California in 1984, under the name Maniac Subsidal. They
were one of the most popular punk-rock bands in the past and their music is still enjoyable. This is one of the only bands that have consistently put out great music year after year. Their lyrics vary from comical to deeper more meaningful. Even though bands like The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Ramones or Rise Against are the core of Punk rock genre, albums like Smash by The Offspring are what keep the audience hooked to Punk Rock.

Sex Pistols were formed in United Kingdom in1975. They have one official album and 3 official
years of existence. This probably the shortest career for a Punk Band. But what they did was pure honesty. They were the first band that ever did it with such "straight in your face" attitude. Even after 30 years, they are known all over the world and have inspired many later punk rock bands to form. They were everything that Punk represents: Controversial and just plain offensive.

Bad Religion were formed in Los Angeles in 1979, during the early years of punk and are active
till date. They have stayed true to punk, unlike basically all bands that have been playing for over ten years. The music is flawless and lyrics are incredible. 30 years of amazing thoughtful music, lyrics that impress to this day, and a really mesmerizing voice. Bad Religion definitely deserves to be on this list.

The Clash were an English punk band, that originated in 1976. They were the best band of their
day and took the throne in England after the demise of the Sex Pistols. They added that one element to punk rock which became the base of present day punk: experimentation with other music styles like reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap and many more. The Clash's politicised lyrics, musical experimentation, and rebellious attitude had a far-reaching influence on rock. The Clash originally consisted of Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon and Nicky "Topper" Headon. Headon left the group in 1982, and internal feuds led Mick Jones to separate from the group in 1983. The group continued with new members for three more years, and finally disbanded in early 1986.
