Burma Point Leads International Pressure on SPDC

Burma Point organizes an international fax campaign and a prayer vigil, both supporting
imprisoned Democracy Leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, in advance of her 64th birthday.

New York, NY – (June 18, 2009) - Burma Point, a human rights organization based in New
York, calls upon the international community to pressure the Burmese junta to release Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi without delay. On the eve of the Nobel Peace Laureate’s 64th birthday, Daw
Aung San Suu Kyi is still facing a sham trial and further detention as a political prisoner.

Last week, Burma Point organized a campaign to fax the messages “Free Daw Aung San Suu
Kyi Now” and “Protect Daw Aung San Suu Kyi” to Burmese government offices, embassies,
and consulates around the world.

This week, in honor of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s 64th birthday, Burma Point is supporting an
around-the-clock 64-hour prayer event of US-based Burmese monks, reminiscent of actions
taken by monks on the streets of Burma in September 2007. The prayer event will take place in
two New York locations, including the United Nations. Similar prayer events are being held by
many Burmese organizations around the world.

Moe Chan, executive director of Burma Point, added, “Our sources inside Burma tell us that the
people of the country do not have faith in the State Peace and Development Council’s justice
system. As a result, they believe Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is bound to be either jailed or put
under house arrest again. Activists on the ground are calling for more international pressure
against the junta. Thus, we must respond to their calls by actively such pressure – not only on
senior leaders, but also on those throughout the rank and file of the SPDC.”

The Burmese junta has thus far appeared to ignore the pressure from world leaders, international
organizations, and famous individuals. In response to Burma Point’s fax campaign, many junta-
run offices have either shut down their fax machines, changed their numbers, or began refusing
to accept any foreign fax.

Zack Michaelson, a Burma Point member who also serves on the Board of Directors of Amnesty
International USA, added, “We have no choice but to continue to engage, to continue to apply
pressure, and to continue to make our voices heard. The junta may ostensibly ignore us, but we
can make them hear us. And there is evidence, in past political prisoner releases both in
Myanmar and other authoritarian states, that the watchful eye of the world can have positive
effects. Whether with faxes, letters, petitions, protests, or other channels, we must continue to
use our freedom to promote freedom for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese people.”
