n the mid 1970s the Universal Postal Union (UPU), a specialized agency of the United Nations under which the postal administrations mail activities are regulated, realized the need for urgent courier business and started the Expedited Mail Services (EMS)

In Kenya EMS was started in 1983 as speed post. It was aimed at providing a door to door service that would transmit urgent documents and parcels. In 1988 Expedited Mail Services (EMS) was officially launched and extended to the international destinations. EMS is an international and domestic courier express service for both documents and parcels, which aims to provide customers with a high quality competitive courier service at an affordable price on global basis. EMS is offered in more than 3,000 destinations worldwide and to over 220 destinations locally as an integral element of the postal service effectively complementing the traditional range of letter-post and parcel-post services. The EMS co-operative was created in 1998 within the framework of the UPU. Its main objective is o enhance and develop the postal express service worldwide. EMS Kenya is among the more than 140 members of the EMS co-operative. D. EMS BULK RATE Bulky shipment over 2000 kgs per month qualifies for bulk rate. This is a flat rate across the board to any destination irrespective of the zone. The first 20kg @kshs.330. Each additional kg or part thereof @ kshs. 30.

E. EMS SAMEDAY This service is offered within CBD of major towns and their environs (upto a radius of 30km).The items must be posted by 1pm to be delivered on the same day. Maximum weight limit is 50kg.

J. EMS CUSTOMIZED This is a specialized EMS service tailored to suit EMS customers specific needs like moving household goods, office equipments, bulky purchased goods etc from one location to another within the country. EMS courier will pick the goods from wherever they are and deliver them to the agreed location. Certain packages may have a greater volume than their actual weight. These packages are large and take up space yet are relatively lightweight. In this case, as per IATA standards, the shipping costs are calculated by the volumetric space they take up. Rates are based on total actual weight or total volumetric weight whichever is greater. Volumetric weight is calculated as follows:
(Lenght * Width * Height) Cms 5000

Note: All prices are quoted in kes inclusive of Vat. All non-document consignment attract weight charge of kes.30.00 The over 500kms zone is limited to the destinations listed as EMS CENTRES only. Anything outside these centres are refered to as special zone. Please refer to the special rate for hardship areas.
