Curriculum Area: Time Period:

Mathematics 45 Minutes

The Australian National Curriculum Mathematics: Measurement and Geometry ACMMG160 Calculate volumes of rectangular prisms Mathematical Proficiencies: Problem Solving Students will develop the ability to make choices and investigate solutions in a problem solving situation Students will apply their existing strategies to solve unfamiliar problems Understanding Students will adapt their knowledge of area to identify the features of volume by using familiar ideas to develop new concepts Students will think mathematically and will be able to interpret the mathematical information given to them Fluency Students will use appropriate expressions Students will recall appropriate strategies they are familiar with to deal with situations they are unfamiliar with Specific Lesson Learning Goals Students will be able to: Calculate the volume of a given cube Calculate the volume of a given rectangular prism Draw a cube with a stated volume Draw a rectangular prism with a stated volume Students Prior Knowledge: Students have previously built cubes and rectangular prisms Students have previously calculated the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms (without the formula) Differentiation: Students who finish early Will be able to use MABs to create the cubes and rectangular prisms they have drawn Students who are struggling Will only complete the first page of the worksheet Preparation: White board and marker Worksheets (one for each student)

LESSON PLAN
Time: Start Lesson Progression Getting Started Ask all the students for their attention and for quiet Review last lesson How to build a cube in terms of layers of area using MABs Record the area of their cube face, the dimensions of their cube and the volume of their cube Ask the students if they can tell me the way in which we calculate the volume of a cube or rectangular prism Write the formula for volume on the white board Draw a cube on the white board Ask for a volunteer to label the parts of the cube that relate to the formula Write the volume of a cube on the board Ask the students how we can work out the size of the sides of the cube Demonstrate on the white board how to work out the size of the sides of the cube Show the students the worksheet and explain what they have to do Ask the students if they have any questions about the worksheet 10 Minutes Working On It Have volunteers hand out the worksheets and the maths books As the students are working, walk around the room checking that the students are on task Answer any questions the students have about the work Ask the students to clarify how they are working approaching the task Ask the students to clarify why they have chosen the method that they have Correct any misconceptions the students have about the work Mark completed worksheets while walking around the room and make corrections as necessary 35 Minutes Once the work is marked have the students glue the worksheet into their maths books Consolidation Ask the students to clear away the materials and return their maths books to my desk Ask the students to return to their desks and sit quietly Ask the students some focus questions How do you calculate the volume of a cube How do you calculate the volume of a rectangular prism When you know the volume of a cube, how do you work out the size of the sides of the cube When you know the volume of a rectangular prism, how do you work out the size of the sides of the prism 45 Minutes Demonstrate the answers to questions 4, 7 and 10 on the white board Tell the students they had a great lesson and dismiss the class for their next lesson

LESSON PLAN
Informal Assessment of Student Outcomes What will you assess? Calculate the volume of a given cube Calculate the volume of a given rectangular prism Draw a cube with a stated volume Draw a rectangular prism with a stated volume How will you assess? What evidence will you collect? Hard Evidence I will collect and mark the completed worksheets
