System Requirements ============================================= The SOLAAR software is designed for use on a PC running one of the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems. Before installing the software, make sure that you have enough free disk space to complete the installation, to store your results files, and to allow Windows to safely run. We suggest 1GB of free disk space should be available before an installation is started. It is important that the operating system is up to date, with all service packs installed before attempting to install SOLAAR. Visit the Windows update site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to check for and install updates. Epson LX300 Printer ============================================= The Epson LX300 Printer does not have printer drivers supplied as part of Windows 95. The printer manual states that the best match to use is the driver for an Epson LX-810 Printer. This printer may have problems when printing to the bottom of single sheet A4 paper. The problem is manifested as the printer positions the paper in the printer too far down the page before it starts printing, so the image flows off the bottom of the page and on to the next sheet of paper. This can be prevented by setting the Paper Size parameter in the Print Setup dialog to a size smaller than A4. The paper size 'Letter 8 1/2 x 11 in' gives the best output when using A4 single sheet output, although it is possible to specify 'Custom' as the paper size to define exactly what the usable page length is for the printer. ============================================= 5. GFTV ============================================= SOLAAR will try to display the GFTV image in the spectrometer status window if there is an entry in the [GFTV] section of the SOLAAR32.INI file to tell it to do so. If you prefer, it is possible to have GFTV displayed by an external application that SOLAAR will try to invoke when GFTV is selected. To do this you will need to remove the entry that enables the SOLAAR GFTV display (look for a line that says Exe0='SOLAAR32' and either remove it, or place a ; character at the start of the line.) When the Data Station software is installed, it sets up entries in the system registry that are important when using GFTV. These settings let the Data Station know which directory the Video software can be found within. If the default settings for the Video installation have not been used, it is possible to modify the SOLAAR32.INI file so that it can locate the Video programs when required. Use NOTEPAD to open the SOLAAR32.INI file in the SolaarM Program folder, and look for a section called [GFTV] and you will find the

setting Exe7. This needs to contain the full path and name of the Video window program (usually MIROTV32.EXE). The Data Station software assumes this will be C:\WINDOWS\MIRO\PCTV\MIROTV32.EXE but a new value can be entered if this is not where the Video software has been installed. For instance in Windows NT 4.0 this might be C:\WINNT\MIRO\PCTV\MIROTV32.EXE ============================================= 6. Eastern European font support ============================================= There is no separate installation available for Eastern European English, however the system registry contains settings that control which fonts are used. This allows the English version of the software to display those characters that may be specific to an Eastern European setting. Use NOTEPAD to open the SOLAAR32.INI file in the SolaarM Program folder, and look for a section called [System], and you will find the entries for setting the name or size of the fonts used by SOLAAR. The names are stored in the FontName_xxx settings, and the sizes are in the FontSize_xxx settings. For example, setting the value of FontName_Grids to Courier New CE would allow all the tables in the software to show the extended characters that are not normally found in the standard Courier font, and setting the value of FontName_Print to Courier New CE will allow the software to print the extended characters. The setting FontName_Graphs is used in all of the graphical displays. These are the only fonts that are likely to need changing, although other font settings are included for consistency. ============================================= 7. Care of your PC Data ============================================= Data on the PC hard disk can be damaged or lost if the PC is switched off without first shutting Windows down properly. TAKE REGULAR BACKUPS! If the PC is turned off without first shutting Windows down properly, use a program such as ScanDisk to fix any data errors before any other programs are run. =============================================
