Know the difference between direct and indirect democracy. Direct democracy: political decisions are made by the people directly. Indirect democracy: political decisions are made by the representatives elected by the people. What 3 theories are used to describe American democracy? Majoritarian theory: the government ought to do what the majority of the people want Elite theory: the argument that society is ruled by a small number of people who exercise power to further their self-interest Theory of pluralism: views politics as a conflict among interest groups. 3. How is political socialization related to political culture?

Political socialization is the process by which people acquire political belief and values. Therefore, those values and belies are part of the political culture of determined group. The process of political socialization is usually made by 2 important sources ,which are the family and educational system. 4. Know what Ideology means and know the characteristics of the 3 basic ideologies most commonly found in American democracy: conservatism, liberalism and libertarianism. Know what issues they favor and oppose

Ideology : a comprehensive set of beliefs about the nature of people and the role of the government Conservatism: Support: liberty, traditional values and lifestyles, tax-rate cuts Oppose to: social innovations such as same-sex marriage, initiatives that would increase the role of the government in the economy, such as Obamas health-care reform, equality, high levels of antipoverty spending and government expenditures to stimulate the economy Liberalism: Support: social and economic equality, antipoverty spending, access to affordable insurance for all citizens, government intervention in the economy, liberty as the freedom to live ones life according to ones own values. Thus, they support gay rights Libertarianism: Support: property right and laissez-faire capitalism (let it be) Oppose to: regulation of the economy and redistribution of income. Government attempts to regulate personal behavior and promote moral values
