Wednesday Morning, 18 September Special Interest Seminar on Novel Coating Technologies for Machining and Wear Applications
Dr Jos Garcia (Sandvik Coromant AB, Sweden)
The lifetime of high performance cutting tools and wear parts can be considerable extended by applying thin wear resistant layers. There is an extended variety of protective coatings, which properties are tailored for specific applications. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD) are established industrial techniques for deposition of wear resistant thin layers in cutting tools and wear parts. The main goal is to optimize properties aiming at reducing wear, friction, oxidation and corrosion. In this special interest seminar selected lectures from researchers at academia and industry give an overview of current R&D trends and innovations in the field of coating technologies for machining and wear applications.

Wednesday Morning, 18 September Special Interest Seminar on Quality and Productivity in Metal Injection Moulding
Chairmen: Dr Marco Actis Grande (Politecnico di Torino, Italy) Prof Frank Petzoldt (Fraunhofer IFAM, Germany) Dr Bruno Vicenzi (MIMitalia srl, Italy)
In an industrial environment that requires fast, reliable, high quality, and reasonable price products, Metal Injection Moulding is emerging as a very competitive technology, as it combines several different advantages of the use of powders and of the use of a very flexible and productive shaping method like injection. Nevertheless, the struggle to achieve the goals required by ever increasingly demanding customers is very tough and MIM producers need to ride the wave of innovation in quality assessment, quality enforcement, and efficient production, and even use management tools to compare their process to competitive technologies in order to evaluate new projects and convince customers. The seminar will give insight in some developments in process design, actuation and control to improve quality and productivity in MIM production.

Wednesday Morning, 18 September Special Interest Seminar on New Alloying Methods for PM Low Alloyed Steels. Lean Steels
Chairmen: Dr Mark Dougan (AMES SA, Spain) Prof Jos Manuel Torralba (IMDEA Materials Institute, Universidad Carlos III Madrid, Spain)
In the last years, we have in the world of PM low alloyed steels new concepts and new compositions, due to two different problems: 1) Costs (enhancing the introduction of lean steels and alloying elements like Cr or Mn). 2) Regulations, avoiding 'dangerous' elements like Ni These 'new' steels have been developed also new ways to develop the alloys, such as the master alloy system or new bonded systems. The development of these new grades has joined changes both in processing routes and alloying design. The seminar will host selected speakers from industry and academia, dealing with different aspects of the process, of the materials and of the applications.
