MSC525M covers the scope and responsibilities of the operations management or valuecreating function: planning, organizing and assembling of resources as well as the directing and controlling of operations and activities in both the manufacturing and service organizations. The course involves a discussion of strategic, operational, and tactical decisions in OM and introduces the student to trends and recent development in this field. An online Learning Management System, MOODLE will be a complementary medium of course materials, class interaction and submission of deliverables.

Objectives/Values :
MSC525M is designed to enable students to appreciate the importance of managing the processes involved in converting and allocating resources in an organization and to relate the significance of the OM function with the other functional areas of business. The methodologies to be employed in the course also aim to introduce students to the common OM related problems, concerns and trends; and to develop among the students the managerial ability of problem solving and decision making in the light of various alternatives available subject to ethical and social responsibility considerations. In addition, the course aims to develop in the student an appreciation of the use of quantitative models in the solution of complex OM problems.

LEARNING APPROACHES

This course will involve the use of powerpoint slide lectures, class discussions, and case discussions done face-to-face or online (via MOODLE) in the delivery of knowledge to the student on various topics in OM as applied in manufacturing and non-manufacturing (service) sectors. Online interaction in the form of asynchronous discussions between the student and the professor and between the students themselves will be used to complement and enhance face-to-face sessions. All submissions will be done on a paperless basis. This will allow the students to maximize their learning opportunities. Submissions will be done through the appropriate Assignment folders in the MOODLE Learning Management System. I. FINAL EXAM (30%)
