Lesson: Volume of solids

Measurement and Geometry Calculate the surface area and volume of cylinders and solve related problems (ACMMG217) Solve problems involving surface area and volume of right prisms (ACMMG218) Lesson Outcomes
Students should be able to: 1. Convert units of volume 2. Calculate the volume of regular solids and right prisms using standard formulae 3. Calculate the volume of prisms using the area of its uniform cross section 4. Calculate the capacity of a solid in various units of capacity

Prior Learning
Students should have a general understanding of area, surface area, and volume. They should be familiar with the basic formulae for nding volume of solids. They should also have an understanding of the converting units of measurements. Students will also be familiar with the keywords associated to prisms from a previous lesson. Lesson Steps: TIME 8.33 - 8.40 7 mins ACTIVITY Mental Students to attempt mental questions on the board. Questions will be forcused on Recall Teacher to show video with recall exercise on volume of a cuboid, triangular prism and cyclinder. Students to watch video and complete exercise questions as video progresses. http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks3/maths/measures/volume/activity/ 8.45 - 9.00 15 mins Volume Teacher to present Keynote on volume of solids and relate the general formula for volume of a prism to the specic examples completed earlier. Students to attempt examples as presentation progresses and solutions discussed as a class. Students to copy notes as required 9.00 - 9.30 30 mins Independant work Students to complete Exercise 4.4 from the textbook. Students may also use this time to ask questions individually. Textbook Presentation: - Keynote Whiteboard Laptop Projector MATERIALS

8.40 - 8.45 5 mins

9.30 - 9.34 4 mins

Closing Teacher to summarise the lesson on the board. Quick points on changing units of volume, formulae for nding volume of solids, and units of capacity to be put discussed and put on the board.
