Best out of waste: Design & Construction of Home Furnishings by Using Old Discarded Saris

ABSTRACT Home furnishings are as diverse and individualistic as the people who buy them. There are so many variables when decorating a home that it takes more than a rudimentary understanding of design concept to pull off a successful look. Home furnishing includes the articles that decorate a house and make it more comfortable. It includes the furniture, fittings, linen, flooring, and plethora of the other accessories like bed spreads, furnishing fabrics, curtains, durries, placements, table covers, and many more things. For making all these articles firstly discarded saris were collected. Then the market survey was done for checking the acceptability level of these articles and for checking the knowledge of the techniques used in manufacturing of these articles such as quilting. Then preparation of sheets was done. Thirdly all the sheets were evaluated by the target group and lastly the highly rated sheets were converted into prototypes. After construction of these articles again the prototype were evaluated by the target group for checking the acceptability of these articles. And it is found that most of the people were interested in these articles. INTRODUCTION Home furnishing gives an eye catching looks to your house. It contains various articles, furniture, flooring etc. Home interior includes the decoration of various rooms. Home furnishing includes the articles that decorate a house and make it more comfortable. It includes the furniture, fittings, linen, flooring, and plethora of the other accessories like bed spreads, furnishing fabrics, curtains, durries, placements, table covers, and many more things. The main motto of using discarded saris is renovation of these saris as Indian woman have number of saris keep on increasing with years and they also have some useless saris which cannot be easily discarded due to their good condition. So this is the finest and excellent way to reuse of saris which will add up some new look to our home. This range is developed for study room where one needs some peace of mind for studying and also a comfortable condition for setting things into his/ her mind. Objectives: To collect discarded saris. To develop design sheets of home furnishing articles in different placements. To evaluate the developed design sheets by target sample. To develop the most preferred designed sheets into prototype. To evaluate the acceptability and marketability by the potent customer. Delimitations: 1. Only 3 range of cushion covers and 2 room ranges were developed into prototype. 2. Study was limited to designing of home furnishing articles only.

3. Sample size was limited to fifty only. Significance of the study: 1. With the help of the study we can introduce the new range of home furnishings. 2. This study will also produce different article with new technique in combination of quilting and may add a wide range of home furnishing. METHODOLOGY Market survey 1. Construction of interview schedule:A self structured interview schedule was constructed with total eleven questions nine objective type and two subjective type questions to collect the information about the generation preference of customers with regard to designing of home furnishing using quilting technique with discarded saris, constructional detail, to extract meaning full result. 2. Selection of the sample: For the study sample was purposively selected and taken out fifty postgraduates of home science from Banasthali University to conduct survey. 3. Data collection: The data was collected by the investigator from the Banasthali University with the help of interview schedule. The purpose of study was explained to the respondents in order to satisfy their curiosity and to obtain good result. 4. Data analysis: Data was analyzed subjectively or statistically to know the consumer preference about the existing designing and about the developing designs. Development and selection of designed sheets: According to respondent preferences the investigator prepared three designed sheets for each household article using quilting technique with discarded saris. Total thirty three sheets were developed for evaluation. 1. Evaluation of developed designs on a five point scale: Assessment was done to select the developed designs by displaying all the thirty three sheets on the respondents and the sheets were graded on a five point scale. 2. Analysis of designed sheets: For analysis of data collection and interview schedule and weighted mean were calculated for final evaluation of product scores and this were calculated for each design and ranking was done for each category. Finally comparison were made and inferences drawn. Phase- 3: Construction of prototype- (Click here to view images of designed products) 1. Construction of selected designs into prototypes: The grades were added and the top most designs were developed into prototypes. 2. Assessment of marketability and salability of prototypes: The costing of house hold articles were done including the cost of raw material (thread, buttons), labour cost and overhead charges combined with 20% profit. done in terms of colour combination, design and surface enrichment, overall appearance implemented with respect its final cost. RESULT AND DISCUSSION Present study titled Best out of waste: - Design and construction of home furnishings by using old discarded saris was investigated and following results were extracted which paved the way of investigator. Priory the investigators trace out the study material to trace out the study. Result of the study has been discussed as under following subsections:Result of consumer preference and awareness survey. Result of assessment of designed sheets. Result of acceptability of home furnishing articles. Result of the Consumer preference and awareness survey: Consumer survey was conducted to collect the information regarding their preference for home furnishing. Results obtained were as under: Interest in interior decoration Interest Percentage Very much 56% Moderately 42% Rarely interested 2% Not interested 0% Interior decoration is an art, which forms an essential part of every home. It is an art, which beautify home in different way. On conducting survey 56% people were found very much interested in interior decoration and 42% were moderately interested. Present ratio showed that most of the people were interested with slight deference. Knowledge of consumers about home furnishings

Preference of consumers for developing different households articles;

Graph shows that all the consumers preferred all the home furnishing articles in prototype. Most of the respondents preferred bed sheets followed by cushion cover, curtains, to develop in house hold articles. While other a small no of respondents preferred table cover and bolster cover. Graph shows that most of the respondents prefer quilting technique to develop house hold articles. While other 23% respondents preferred painting, 18% preferred embroidery and 32% preferred painting technique for making house hold articles.

Preference of consumers for different quilting technique used for product development

Graph shows that maximum respondents prefer the machine quilting for product development and only 10% respondents preferred that product had to be manufactured by hand quilting. Knowledge of consumers about quilting technique

Graph shows that 85% respondents had knowledge about the quilting technique and very few respondents does not had knowledge about the quilting technique. As quilting is the oldest technique used for the quilts, thus all respondents knew, what is quilting actually. Result of Assessment of Designed Sheet: The preliminary survey was conducted to determine respondents attitude towards the design of home furnishing articles on the sheets of articles. Each sheet was given scores from 1-5. After that the percentage was calculated.

In the rating scale one point was given for excellent and five points was given for average. So, that sheet was selected for the prototype development which obtained lowest percentage. Result and Discussion of Cushion Cover Designed Sheets Analysis of set 1 Graph shows that sheet no. 1 had maximum acceptability for prototype development, followed by sheet no. 2 and no. 3.

Analysis of set 2 Graph shows that sheet no. 1 had the maximum acceptability for prototype development, followed by sheet no. 1 and no. 2.

Analysis of set 3 Graph shows that sheet no 2 had the maximum acceptability for prototype, followed by sheet no. 3 and no. 2.

Result of acceptability of home furnishing articles: Home furnishing articles were evaluated by consumers on the basis of aesthetic appeal, colour combination, design, and consumer acceptability. Hundred respondents were selected for the evaluation. Each of the prepared home furnishing article was displayed towards respondents and they gave rating to each of them according to the aesthetic appeal, colour combination, design, and consumer acceptability. Five point rating scale was used and result was calculated.

Result of cushion covers according to aesthetic appeal Graph shows that according to the aesthetic appeal most accepted cushion cover set was set no. 3, followed by set no. 1 and no. 2.

Result of cushion covers according to colour combination Graph shows that according to colour combination most acceptable cushion cover set was set no. 3, followed by set no. 1 and no. 2.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION Indian womens have an increasing number of saris with every passing year and they got bored with some of them. Due to their intact condition we cannot through them away. Therefore, there was a need to develop the interest of people towards reuse of discarded saris. This study was conducted to develop individual interest towards renovation of discarded saris
