K.L.UNIVERSITY (Department of Mechanical Engineering) Assignment questions, 2013-2014(Semester-III) 11-ME203 Date of Exam: KINEMATICS OF MACHINES Time of Exam: DVA RAMASASTRY Max. Marks:

17-AUG-2013 9.00AM-9.50AM 5

(i) Answer any Two questions given to you. (ii) Each question carries 5 marks. (iii) Draw neat sketches wherever necessary.

1. a) A sketch of a backhoe is shown in Figure below. Draw a kinematic diagram of the mechanism. Specify the number of links and the number of joints and calculate the mobility for the Mechanism(DOF). b) Slider Crank Mechanism is only a special case of four bar mechanism. Justify the statement. 2. Figure shows a mechanism that is typical in the tank of a water closet. Note that flapper C is hollow and filled with trapped air. Carefully examine the configuration of the components in the mechanism. Then answer the following leading questions to gain insight into the operation of the mechanism. a) As the handle A is rotated counterclockwise, what is the motion of flapper C? b) When flapper C is raised, what effect is seen? c) When flapper C is lifted, it tends to remain in an upward position for a period of time. What causes this tendency to keep the flapper lifted? d) When will this tendency (to keep flapper C lifted) cease? e) What effect will cause item D to move? f) As item D is moved in a counterclockwise direction, what happens to item F? g) What does item F control? h) What is the overall operation of these mechanisms? i) Why is there a need for this mechanism and a need to store water in this tank? 3. Sketch slider crank chain and its various inversions, stating actual machines in which these are used in practice. 4. a) The distance between the axes of the two parallel shafts is 10-2 m. They are connected by Oldham coupling Find the maximum kinetic energy of the intermediate piece when the shafts revolve at 250rpm. The mass of the intermediate piece is 5Kg. b) Classify and discuss briefly types of Kinematic pairs with examples. 5. In a crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism, as shown in Fig., the driving crank length is 80 mm. The distance between the fixed centres is 220 mm and the length of the slotted lever is 500 mm. Find the ratio of the times taken on the cutting and idle strokes. Determine the effective stroke also. 6. Fig. shows the lay out of a quick return mechanism of the oscillating link type, for a special purpose machine. The driving crank BC is 40 mm long and time ratio of the working stroke to the return stroke is to be 2. If the length of the working stroke of R is 120 mm, determine the dimensions of length of the fixed link and crank.
