Double J Archery in East Otto is getting set to host a World Qualifier for the International Bowhunters Association. The qualifier takes place
this weekend, June 27-28 as a prelude to the group’s World Championships, coming up August 12-15 at Holiday Valley. The range for the

Ellicottville Town Planning Board Discusses Safety & Visual Appeal of Partially Constructed Buildings

Ellicottville’s Town Planning Board
held their monthly meeting this past
Monday, June 22.
The meeting began with board
members discussing their concerns
about the safety and visual appeal of
the partially constructed buildings
at Morningside Estates. They noted
that with the economic downturn,
construction has all but stopped
at the site, and many of the board
members said they felt the property
was unsightly.
The members also said that without
a better means of preventing access
to the site, cases of vandalism and
trespassing could occur, especially
during special events held in
Ellicottville. They added that partially
built homes could pose a safety issue,
such as personal injury or arson,
and that the owners of Morningside
Estates should address these issues.
The board members acknowledged
that they have no legal authority to
force Morningside’s owners to make
changes to the property’s appearance,
under current zoning laws, but they
can enforce laws to protect the
community’s safety.
The board agreed to send a letter
to Morningside’s owners suggesting
that they screen, fence or blockade
unfinished sections of the property,
and that they finish partially
constructed buildings and spread
topsoil on the lawns.
The board agreed to check with the
Town Board to determine the status
of the fire hydrants at the site, in
order to be certain that the property
is protected in case of fire, and that
firefighting personnel can reach the
site. The board would also like to
see non-working hydrants covered
to avoid possible confusion in case
of fire.

The Villager Rockies Finish Out the Season On Top

The Villager Rockies are the 2009, 9-10 Year Old Little League Baseball Champions in the
ECLV Little League Program! The Rockies bested the Cattaraugus Royals this past Monday
night in Little Valley 7 to 5. Behind a fine pitching performance from Robert Spell and Frank
Neff, the Rockies were led at the plate by Walter Woodarek, Evelyn Cortez, Mitchell “The
Pistol” Sexton, Evan Palmatier and Hunter O’Stricker. Zach Golley had a fine defensive

LOCAL STUDENT PERFORMANCES

A new event will be taking place this summer in Ellicottville. Performance-starved high
school students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents every Saturday from
2-4pm at the Ellicottville Gazebo. Students are invited to perform vocals, instrumentals, or
what have you, with the public as their audience. Performances are scheduled to begin July
4 and continue each Saturday throughout the summer. If you are interested in participating,

Trail Workday
Allegany Nordic Club Hits the Trails at Allegany State Park
Allegany Nordic sponsored its first trail workday of the 2009 season on Saturday, June
13. Six Allegany Nordic members turned out to restore drainage and cut back vegetation
on Sweetwater and Ridge Run trails of the Art Roscoe Trail system at Allegany State
Park. The mission of Allegany Nordic is to improve cross-country skiing on the Art
Roscoe Trails. Formed three years ago, the group has grown to include skiers from
Canada, Pennsylvania and Ohio and a core group from WNY. The group’s website, www.
alleganynordic.org, reports trail conditions, park information and a variety of group

Ellicottville’s Annual Rodeo.
This Rodeo is a tradition
for many members of our
community and has taken place
in Ellicottville for the past 20
years. This year’s 21st Annual
Championship Rodeo is sure to
have the largest turnout of any

Riding and Trick Riding. The

Rodeo is the largest IPRA
sanctioned Rodeo in the

of the Ellicottville Rodeo says,

Creekside Roundup: Horse and Pony Pull in Franklinville
The Creekside Roundup is a sub-committee of the Franklinville Chamber of Commerce.
Founded in 2003 the committee is charged with “bringing people to the town and its
businesses, and to promote equine activities,” according to Brian Armison, a member
of the committee. The committee built the corral for their events through donations from
individuals and various companies. They are sponsoring 13 equine events in the area for
2009, including the upcoming Horse and Pony Pulls, scheduled for this weekend.

each successful pull. The horse
that pulls the most weight the
entire distance is declared the
winner.

nthis, you ask? The answer to
this is by running a mission at
a Challenger Center. We are
fortunate to be able to say that
this center is right in our own
backyard located in Olean, NY.
The Challenger Center for
Space Science Education is
an international, not-for-profit
education organization that
was founded by the families
of the astronauts who lost their
lives during the last flight of the
Challenger Space Shuttle, STS-
51-L, on January 28, 1986.
Challenger Center creates
positive learning experiences
that raise students’ expectations
of success; foster a long-term
interest in mathematics, science,
and technology; and motivate
them to pursue careers in these
fields.
Construction began in
January of this year on a new
$2.25 million Dresser-Rand
Challenger Learning Center
on St. Bonaventure University
property. The building was
donated by the University.
Major sponsors besides St.
Bonaventure include: Dresser-
Rand, CUTCO and Park Centre
Development. Part of the
construction included installing
equipment that resembles
!mission control and the space
tstation. The center will provide
dspace-themed educational
ropportunities to students in
Southwestern New York and
RACCOON RALLY CYCLE FEST: JUNE 27-28 ~ ALLEGANY STATE PARK
will feature both Ponies and
miniature horses. The “Minis”
will pull first starting at 1pm
(sign-ups start at 11am). Linda
Murphy, President of The
Double Tree Pony Pullers
explains, “The Minis are a
separate horse breed, about 36
to 38 inches tall.” She goes on,
“The Minis typically start with
200 lbs. and only have to pull
the boat ten feet.” Each animal
pulls the boat in turn until one
can no longer pull the weight.
That animal drops out and the
other contestants take over,
until a winner is declared.
Sunday brings the main
event with the Second Annual
Creekside Roundup Horse
Pull. The boat is loaded with
an impressive 1200 lbs. for the
first pull. With each successive
pull 500 more pounds are
added, and the hoses have to
pull the boat some 30 feet.
Some of the horses can wind
up pulling up to 10,000 lbs!
Before anyone can worry
about an animal being harmed,
Linda points out, “The horses
are worked with every day.
These animals are equine
athletes, and they are trained
to do this.” Weigh-in starts
at 9am, and the pull starts at

noon. Both days will be fun for
the entire family and there will
be barbecue chicken to enjoy.

is completely independent
of St. Bonaventure and is an
independent 501(c)3 not-for-
profit corporation.
As of May 31, 2009, 67% of
the funds needed for this project
have come from donations,
grants and pledges. Donations

Yes, my darlings, there
is a community with the
reverse snob appeal name of
Farmersville, and yes, it is
very close to Ellicottville, and
yes, it is strikingly beautiful
countryside where well
forested mountain views are
yours alone or may be shared
with only a few farms or
vacation homes.
Built in 1990-91, the home incorporates features not seen
in Ellicottville until many years later and generally only
in homes costing $1 million or more. Moreover, the home
has a great style all its own, and the kind of construction
detailing that is achieved by only Ellicottville’s most highly
respected pros.
While driving around in
this nearby faraway place, I
happened on a home that took
my breath away. From the stone
terraces that prettify its gentle
hillock, to the latticework art
motif carved into its shutters,
to the wide span of its carpet-
like turf that angles down to
a footbridge and a sparkling
pond, it was clear the home
was built by someone who

have failed to take into account
is the overwhelming power of
nationalism. Nationalism in the
form of popular uprising can be
a very dangerous weapon.
At this point we have no idea
how this thing will play out.
One thing, however, has been
missing from the massive rallies
in Iran. Whenever hundreds
of thousands of demonstrators
gather in any of the Gulf States
or, for that matter, anywhere in
the Middle East, they are almost
universally accompanied by
chants of “death to America.”
Those disconcerting chants are
nowhere to be found today in
Iran. By taking a softer stance
towards the region, Obama has
taken away a very powerful
weapon. Ahmadinejad could
have easily blamed the whole
mess on us but now any claims
of U.S. interference sound silly
and the people of Iran realize
this. The regime could have
wrapped itself in the cloak of
nationalism and taken much of
the momentum away from the
movement and, I guarantee,
Ahmadinejad is cursing us
just as much now as he would
have been had the Iranian
skies been full of U.S. fighter
jets. Diplomacy as an agent of
change? What a novel idea.

see the crackdown and hear the
gunfire and we want to help.
We want to blow things up and
we want to see Ahmadinejad
swinging from the gallows
like his former Iraqi neighbor.
We cannot, however, allow
this to be turned into an us
versus them struggle. This is
an Iranian issue and, for now,
the Iranians have to handle
it themselves. By somehow
interfering in this movement we
would only destroy it. The thin
ice that is forming around the
Theocratic regime in Iraq will
eventually crack under it’s own
weight and, as they desperately
seek someplace else to place
the blame, the heavier they
will become. We must tread
carefully around this one folks.

noting that competition is stiff
at that level.
But in previous years,
people from this state have
won their classes at Worlds.
This weekend’s qualifier at
Double J will attract shooters
from places like Syracuse and
Pennsylvania. “This is pretty
much the last chance” to
qualify locally.
Jennings has enjoyed archery
as a shooter for thirty-two
years and has participated in
various world championships.
He started Double J Archery
in 2002 “to make bow hunters
a little bit better” and so they
have a place to practice. The
sport is open to all age groups.
Jennings said children as
young as age four learn how
to shoot a bow and arrow, with
help from their parents. “I have
people into their seventies
who are still shooting in the
sport. And it’s a great bunch of
people.”
This year, Jennings is
getting a lot of inquiry about
the qualifier, which is his
second. He expects to see
about one hundred shooters
for the weekend. But not all
of them need to qualify for the
World Championships. Some

decline in interest in the sport a
few years ago “but I’m starting
to see it coming back.” He’d

their late teens, early twenties
and thirties.
Looking ahead to August,
Ellicottville Chamber
of Commerce Executive
Director Brian McFadden
anticipates another successful
visit for the International
Bowhunting Organization’s
acknowledged that any of
these ideas would have to be
added as amendments to the
new zoning laws, which are
currently in discussion.
The board held a public
hearing for an application for
a special use permit to turn
Ellicottville’s car wash, which
closed May 31, into a storage
facility.
Owner John Northrup
attended the public hearing,
and since no one expressed
opposition to his plan to the
board, the members accepted
the application for the special
permit and accepted the
approval of a site plan review.
The board members were
reminded during the meeting
that they need four hours
of training a year, and that
the majority still needed
training time to reach their
requirements. The members
discussed options for training,
which include CD-ROMs,
conferences and online
tutorials. The board members
agreed that the CD-ROMs
were the preferred options, and
decided to look into obtaining
compliments and captures the

Summer Theatre Program in Ellicottville
After a successful first year of Creative Arts and Theatre Stars, (C.A.T.S.) I need your support to
continue the program this summer. For those of you who aren’t familiar, C.A.T.S is an enrichment
program sponsored by the Ellicottville Rotary Club, for children that will encourage creativity
through the arts. Such as: acting, music, dance, and crafts. The program will run approximately 6
weeks and will be offered to children entering 1st through 8th grade, although the groups will be split
1st to 4th and 5th to 8th. Each group will meet once a week working on different aspects of theatre.
(Schedule and location TBA.) At the end of the program a performance will be presented by the
participants that will demonstrate the skills learned during the program.
The program is free of charge and offered to any child within the age requirements. Registration
will be held next Tuesday, June 30 from 6-8pm at the village gazebo.
