PARA JUMBLES 5 sentence type

Try to find essential links in ur very first scanning of the statements. You will usually b
able to find at least one such link - & that will at least eliminate SOME answer choices –
if it doesn’t directly lead to the correct answer choice.

Consider question 1

Statement C talks abt “these ppl”. Now ur link is “which ppl?” If u can find out which ppl
are being discussed, it automatically MUST precede C.

Now see statement D – it ends with “and ppl who have responded quickly…” Here’s the
subject of “these” in C.

Sadly, we only have one option in which D does not immediately precede C.

Now if u consider B, you will see that it is a general statement with phrases like “must
not only be rewarded…” “but must be consciously developed…”

The rest of the statements follow this chain of thot. This, in essence, is the imp thing to
realize in this set of statements – bcoz only one option begins with B

i got confused...coz i thot A sounded like a topic statement. AE also form a pair
Coupled with the observation that DC is a pair, I chose option (d) w/o considering B at
all. However, that was the key there - tho not easily recognizable, but yes, after finding a
link, it does becum obvious.

Therefore, B must open n another link must be DC.

However, u needn’t worry abt spending a min or so on something like this – it’s a
confusing one.

Now take a look at ques 2

You might notice 2 things at the first glance:

1. the common words in A n D – “the general impression”


2. the “hence” in statement B

In view of the first observation, u can c that A states the impression n D refutes it. U now
know that A cums b4 D, but don’t fall into the trap of thinking of AD as a pair. D talks abt
“the results” that proved something. Therefore, some action that lead to this result, and
therefore the conclusion, must have occurred in between A n D.
Moving to the 2nd observation – from where does this “hence” originate? And who are the
‘they’ referred to? Obviously, ‘they’ are Huthwaite’s researchers, who had to find another
method, because what knowledge they had wasn’t particularly useful.

Now uve got the link EB.

Couple both observations n voila! The only feasible option is (a) AEBDC.

Look at statement A. It ends with the ques, “ When was modern Indian art born?” The
remaining statements serve only to qualify this statement.

BE n CD are obvious links here.

Sum other pointers:

DO
• try to find single links and check with the options. One link might help a lot.
• See what statement hits u ‘first n fastest’ – like our teacher puts it. Use that statement
as a base.
• Be careful to read ALL the statements, though don’t worry abt palcing each one.

DON’T

• Worry abt getting every line in place. Your goal is to reach the destination. The
journey isn’t meant to be enjoyed! You can do that on ur way to IIMA.
• Try to necessarily find the opening or closing statement, if you can’t spot it at once.
• Look at the options BEFORE reading the statements.

OTHERS:

• Look out for pronouns. “They/theirs/them” “he/his/him” “She/her” etc, things which
invariably have to have a subject.
• When an abbreviation is used, the expanded form will usually PRECEDE it.
• Try to connect KEYWORDS – or common words/phrases in two statements.
• Try to hit links – pairs of sentences u know must follow each other.
• Once u’ve read the statements, take a look at the options. They just might help – for
example, if all 4 begin with A or end with D, u have at least one statement’s position
fixed

Finally, DON’T bother abt putting every statement in its place. If one link is very
obvious, just go for it. Of course, keep the other statements in mind – don’t ignore
them. Help them to help you – not to hamper your progress. Only very rarely will
you be required to put in a lot of time to get EVERY statement where it belongs – n
then that ques is best left alone. It’s just a speedbreaker.
N now remember that you owe me the biggest Toblerone available. I don’t care if
this doesn’t help you – but it sure took a lot of my time!!!
