Hi all,
Member
No-one responded I'm getting the feeling I'm not popular in this thread...

Posts: 23 Anyway, I have re-installed the Windows XP home from scratch, from the MSI recovery disk. So
by the end of that, I have a basic MSI wind with Windows XP home.

Since last night til now (lunchtime), I have had 3 or 4 full full install attempt. So for the past 24
hrs, I think I'm pretty much an expert of installing WindowXP/MacOSX. Here's what worked for
me. The funny thing is, it is completely different from anyone else's installation instruction.
Maybe that's why I was confused...

a) Install Windows XP from MSI recovery disk (This is because I ruined my previous install
attempt, maybe you won't need this step). Make sure you create 2 partitions, not just one single
C: partition. I made my windows partition 20Gb.
b) After installing Windows, boot up Windows and have a general check that everything is fine.
c) Put in the MSIWindOSX86 disk in your external DVD drive. At the beginning of installation,
reformat the 2nd partition (not the windows partition) to MAC format 'HFS+ journaled'. Then
follow the steps to install. Installation takes about 45 mins.
d) That's it! after MacOSX installation is complete, it will reboot itself. Darwin loader will come
up, you may press any key to choose to boot from Windows or Mac.
e) I did not have to put in a Windows XP disk to recover the HFS+ partition error.

Hmmm.... So that's what I'm up to. Like I said, I've had a few goes at this to make it work on my
MSI Wind. I am satisfied for now, but:
a) Since I recovered Windows XP from the recovery disk, it is in NFTS format. I would like it in
FAT32 format so the Mac can access that drive too.
b) My recovery disk still doesn't work. I even tried to installed XP Pro after the XP Home recovery,
it still says disk error when I boot. So in the future, if I have to rebuild windows, I have to wipe
out Mac OS X too.
c) The build in Webcam doesn't work in OS X. I read from others that the Webcam works. Am I
missing something?
d) My wireless Dell 1490 card does work. So I got something right from the start

Cheers,
bh5354

OSX/XP - 2gb/Dell-1490 NTFS-3G is the free program or use Paragon NTFS for same effect

So does anyone know why my normal XP disk (not the recovery disk) will not work on my Wind?
Very strange.

Update:
- My webcam works now! After the WindOSX86.iso install, you have to use the Mac software
updater and update a few stuff (I read that from someone else in the forum). Nice, I can now use
photobooth, even if it's a bit slow.

- Bluetooth mouse don't work I've been trying to pair my Wind to my wireless mighty mous,
with and without passkey. Nothing. The sad thing is the wireless mighty mouse does pair with
Window XP's bluetooth. The irony! lol Read from the forum others are having the same issue.

Do I really have to buy a real Macbook to make everything work??? Actually I don't mind the
price, I just think a Macbook is way too heavy.

I tried few ways

1) tried spfdisk and set windows partition to active...the result is displaying error loading
operating system, even try to use fixmbr thru windows repair..all no luck
2) tried editing com.apple.Boot.plist, <string>-x rd=disk0s2</string> , it still boot to leopard
instead to winxp, and give error forcing to shut down power.

any one help me??? I really prefer to boot to winxp on default instead of Mac

thchang,

Starting from a virgin HD, partition HD, install XP on first, then install OSX using MBR on the HD
options in Disk Utility.

You might need to use FixMBR or whatever but set XP as active and then that is default. Add
Chain0 to be able to boot to OSX. When booting OSX you will get the Darwin bootloader which
Joined: Tue Sep 09, 2008 also will get you back to XP but you'll need to select OSX from the Darwin bootloader.

Works for me

Hi, thank you for the reply. I think what u said is what exactly i have done.
I did start from fresh wind, bought the wind, boot up, after finish install xp.
i format d drive to fat32, and insert windOS86.iso and run the installation of leopard.

then use mbr to fix boot, so OSX and winxp and boot without anyproblem
at this stage, d drive is the active partition.
i then try to addchain0 in winxp root drive, use spfdisk to set c drive to active partition (winxp)
but after that, i failed to boot in OS, once the computer turned on, it will says error loading
operating system.
and it's dead. won't pop the boot menu, the only thing i can do is back to spf and restore it and
make the d drive(mac) back to active partition. but that means mac is default boot priority again,
which is not what i want

any clue what i have done wrong?

You should not format D.. waste of time and might be why its cocked up. C should be Windows
and should be the active partition - if D is then you did something wrong. You did NOT do what
Wind Guru
I said.. virgin HD has no partitions. Just make ONE for Windows (say 20gb) and then leave rest
unpartitioned. Then when installing Mac allow Disk Util to format a Mac OS partition.

I have 3 partitions - 15gb XP, shared 45gb and 15gb OSX. Worked for me no trouble

Hi everyone,
Wind Guru
After three weeks away from the internet - but with my Wind - I realised it would be convenient
Joined: Sun Jul 27, 2008 1:08 to have XP at hand sometimes. My Wind runs OSX as its main partition, and Ubuntu as a second
am partition. I've read all this thread, but it mainly talks about installing XP first. Since my OSX

install is neat, I'd rather not touch it. Is there a way to install XP after OSX? What would be the
procedure?

Thanks!

pierrox, thchang... its ok to install XP after OSX... I've tried this but with vista..
I then reinserted the OSX boot disk in single user mode and did an Fdisk to make the OSX the
Wind Guru
active partition...

I forgot where the link was but as far as I remember, these are the procedure:

1. Insert OSX disk

Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.5 fdisk - e /dev/rdisk0

(WindOSX86)
flag 1
Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
Intel Atom 1.6GHz update
2GB Kingston DDR667 Ram
write
160GB Toshiba Hardisk
quit
-- I call her Mishi!

4. Reboot

Note:
flag 1 - This is assuming that your primary partition is OSX. if not set it to 2...

Post your results after...

Anyway, don't be afraid to make a mess... coz that is where the fun is...

Netbooks: MSI Wind normally or it halts after the osx86 installation.

I did the "fixmbr" a couple of times and I even tried doing the "fdisk" in the osx86 bootup
environment but all it did was to make my system boot xp.

My HD is partitioned into 3 parts. Partition 1 is for XP, partition 2 is for osx86 then the last one
is a FAT32 for common files shared between OSs.

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong but any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks everyone!

From my experience, Darwin loader will only boot the OS by default if it is on an active
partition, in this case, the OSX. If you try to boot XP from Darwin, then goto Disk
management and set your XP partition as active, you will now be able to boot from XP but
not on Darwin anymore.

I want to tribleboot, how did you do this ,I reinstall hundreds of the vista & Mac OS ,can't do that.
