Reasons to Choose TTUs Biological Sciences Department:

Biological Sciences has great programs and centers such as: Forensic Entomology, the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP); The Clark Scholars Program -- an intensive seven week summer research program for highly qualified high school juniors and seniors; Center for Biotechnology and Genomics; Center for the Integration of Science Education and Research; Center for Environmental Radiation Studies (CERS), and Scientists associated with CERS have been leaders in research at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine since 1992. Recently, CERS scientists have begun programs evaluating the dispersion and human impact of radiation released from the Al Tuwaitha Nuclear Facility south of Baghdad, Iraq. CERS scientists currently serve as members of the United States Official Delegation to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria for advising the government of Iraq on characterizing and decommissioning former nuclear facilities in their country. Texas Tech University has received five grants from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Science Education Program totaling over $7.8 million dollars in funding. Students accepted to the JAMP program receive $1000 scholarship per semester beginning in the student's sophomore year of college and $2000 stipend to attend summer internships following the student's freshman, sophomore, and junior years of college at one of the participating medical schools. Not only do these student receive financial benefits, they will be given admission to medical school in Texas to continue their studies if all the program requirements are met. The department encourages undergraduate students to work with professors in research laboratories and projects to obtain first-hand information about research in the life sciences. Opportunities are available in many fields, including systematics and evolutionary biology, ecology and environmental biology, cell and molecular biology, and several areas of biotechnology.

General Biological Sciences Requirements:

The department encourages students to participate in research opportunities A minor is required outside of biological sciences Students must complete PHYS 1403 and PHYS 1404, or PHYS 1408 and PHYS 2401 Students must complete 16 hours of chemistry to include CHEM 1307, 1107, 1308, 1108, 3305, 3105, 3306, and 3106 Only courses with a grade of C or better are accepted for major, minor and adjunct requirements Core Curriculum Always consult your advisor for up-to-date course requirements No more than 6 hours of undergraduate research may be counted toward any major
