The more comprehensive approach

DRR/CCA

Sustainable Development
Social & Economic Development Environmental Preservation & Enhancement

Make communities risk-free and/or more resilient

Provide opportunities for better development SCTEP - JOINT VENTURE initiatives

Ensure development efforts do not increase vulnerability

While we cannot do away with natural hazards, we can eliminate those we cause, minimize those we exacerbate, and reduce our vulnerability to most. Doing this requires healthy and resilient communities and ecosystems. Viewed in this light, disaster mitigation is clearly part of a broader strategy of sustainable development making communities and nations socially, economically and ecologically sustainable.

Benefits in Mainstreaming DRR/CCA

Better appreciation of planning environment through detailed information on natural hazards, the risks attendant to them, and the vulnerabilities of exposed areas and communities More realistic projections of demand and supply of land (for settlements, production, protection and infrastructure) as development should be restricted in areas prone to natural hazards

Slide 13 of 15

Benefits in Mainstreaming DRR/CCA

Better understanding by decision-makers of the development issues risks to fatality and property damages are quantified basis for setting decisions to reduce loss of life and property damages from natural hazards

Slide 14 of 15

Benefits in Mainstreaming DRR/CCA

Appropriate DRR/CCA options and measures are included as key plan strategies and priority PPAs, evaluated vis--vis quantified risks, Included as priority in the investment program, provided with budgetary resources and implemented
