Long-Term Memory (LTM) Long-term memory (LTM) is the memory of the past. LTM has no limit to its capacity.

[1] Its capacity is immeasurably large.[2] Every single things that is remembered or could be remembered will be stored in LTM.[1] For example, we can remember telephone numbers for many years through

repetition; this information is said to be stored in long-term memory.[2] There are two types of LTM, declarative memory and nondeclarative memory. Declarative Memory
Declarative memory refers to memories which can be intentionally recalled.[2] This type of memory also known as explicit memory. Declarative memory divided into two subtypes; semantic declarative memory and episodic memory.[1] Semantic declarative memory is the memory of knowing. It is related to the memory of general facts, concepts and knowledge such as the fact that Alexandria is in Egypt. Semantic memory is not linked to any particular time or place but instead constitutes a body of general knowledge.[1] Episodic memory is the memory of remembering which refers to memory for specific

events in time.[1,2] For example, the meals for last years birthday party. So, episodic memory is infused with sense of self which it defines as a personal history.[1] Non-declarative Memory Non-declarative memory is also known as implicit memory. This type of memory does not require conscious thought in contrast to declarative memory. Thus, using this type of memory, we remember things effortlessly. There are two subdivisions of non-declarative memory; procedural and priming memory. Procedural memory in simpler words is the how to knowledge as this type of memory allows us to carry out commonly learned tasks without any conscious thought. Examples of procedural memory are how to ride a bike, use a fork, walk etc. Procedural memory uses a different part of the brain than episodic memory. For instance, a person with amnesia might not remember about his personal life or past experiences but retains the ability to carry out tasks like eating or drinking. To explain priming, we may use the example of a person who has heard something very recently, or more frequently is able to recall something more quickly. For instance, if a person who studies at Alexandria University is asked to imagine a university in his head, it is highly likely that the university envisioned is of his/her institution. [3]

Introduction What is memory? Memory is the ability to store, retain and recall information and experiences. Imagine if we have no ability to memorise or the capacity for memory. Even a simple task like walking to school and praying would be an impossible feat. The importance of memory is boundless. The reason we can make advancements in technology is because the knowledge from one generation to another is passed down from ones memory to another. Thus, we can move forward without having to reinvent the wheel. Conclusion Memory is an essential aspect of our lives, whether we realise it or not. Thus, it is important to maintain a healthy brain and improve our memory thus boosting our quality of life. Nowadays, there are a lot of alternatives to help increase our memory strength like taking supplements and doing brain exercises.
