THE
SEPTEMBER 8, 2013 TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Prayer For Peace In Syria
God of Compassion, Hear the cries of the people of Syria, Bring healing to those suffering from the violence, Bring comfort to those mourning the dead, Strengthen Syria's neighbors in their care and welcome for refugees, Convert the hearts of those who have taken up arms, And protect those committed to peace. God of Hope, Inspire leaders to choose peace over violence and to seek reconciliation with enemies, Inspire the Church around the world with compassion for the people of Syria, And give us hope for a future of peace built on justice for all. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and Light of the World, Amen. Petition: For the people of Syria, that God may strengthen the resolve of leaders to end the fighting and choose a future of peace. We pray to the Lord...

This petition to withdraw the HHS Mandate is being sponsored by the Catholic League. Please click on the link and enter your name and email address. If you wish you can choose not to receive email updates from them by not checking that box. They are collecting signatures for six weeks and will present it to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on October 1st http://www.catholicleague.org/petition-to-withdraw-the-hhs-mandate/. There are millions of people of faith in America who object to the Government forcing them to provide insurance coverage that violates their freedom of conscience. The accommodations that have been made for the churches are a shell game. The insurance company pretends to cover the abortion inducing pills and contraception for free and the religious institutions are supposed to pretend that they don't know that they are still paying for it through higher premiums for everyone. And there is no protection for people of faith with businesses to make these decisions for their own employees without the heavy hand of government intruding. PLEASE let your voice be heard. This is such a simple thing to do but if millions of citizens respond it may be a wakeup call. Please share the link with your family and friends. It is the least we can do to protect our First Amendment religious liberty rights.
The Defense of Religious Liberty In the Public Square Featuring John Breen, J.D., Professor of Law at Loyola University, Chicago Wednesday, September 11, 7 PM St. John the Apostle Church 330 N Westmore, Villa Park, IL 60181
On August 1, 2013, the mandate from the Department of Health & Human Services, which is a direct attack on religious liberty, has gone into effect. The mandate forces employers to pay for coverage of abortioninducing drugs, sterilization, contraception and related counseling in violation of their religious beliefs and moral convictions. Non- compliance will subject Americans to penalties amounting to millions of dollars. Profess Breens talk will clarify the challenges we face in defending our religious freedom. Professor John Breen graduated from Notre Dame in 1985 with the highest honors and attended Harvard Law School. Following his graduation from Harvard in 1988, Professor Breen clerked for Hon. Boyce F. Martin, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He joined the Loyola faculty in 1996, where he has taught courses including Professional Responsibility, Jurisprudence, and Catholic Social Thought.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
At the conclusion of todays gospel, we hear Jesus tell a great crowd that anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple. A few of Jesus immediate disciples, such as Peter, John and James, did just that: They responded to Jesus call, renouncing everything to follow him. How do modern disciples of Jesus respond when confronted with this apparently harsh command of Jesus? Surely the renunciation of possessions need not mean literally giving all ones possessions away, does it? Questions we might ponder this week though: Do our possessions keep us from encountering Christ at Mass? Do they distract us from our parish family? Do our possessions interfere with our relationships? Do they make us insensitive to those less fortunate?
