Evolution of Tesco Early 1900s

1919Jack Cohen founds Tesco, when he begins to sell surplus groceries from a stall in the East End of London. His first days profit is 1 and sales 4. 1929Jack Cohen opens his first Tesco store in Burnt Oak, Edgware, North London.

1960s We take over a chain of 212 stores in the North of England and add another 144 stores in 1964 and 1965.

1970s and 1980s


1974We open our first petrol station at major sites across the UK. 1982For the first time, we introduced computerised checkouts in our stores.

1990s
1993The Every Little Helps strap line is launched. The new campaign attracts 1.3 million new customers between 1993 1995. 1995We become the market-leading food retailer. 1995Tesco Clubcard is launched. 1999Tesco Personal Finance clocks up its one millionth customer. We launch a new online bookstore and online banking.

2000s
2000Tesco.com is launched. 2001Florence and Fred clothing range is launched. 2003Tesco Mobile is launched.

2004Tesco Broadband is launched. 2004Tesco HSC starts operations.

2005We announce annual profits of 2 billion. 2006Tesco Direct, the catalogue business, is launched.

2007We enter the US market with a neighbourhood store strategy. 2008We enter India, setting up a wholesale business and an exclusive franchise agreement with the Tata Group who operate Star Bazaar hypermarkets.

2009We enter full service retail banking after buying out the RBS 50% stake in Tesco Personal Finance. Following the acquisition, Tesco Personal Finance is known as Tesco Bank.

2010We open the world's first zero-carbon supermarket in Ramsey.

2011We open the new Tesco Asia Academy in Incheon, South Korea. 24,000 staff across Asia are trained at the Academy each year.

2011We open our first zero-carbon store in Asia, in Bang Phra, Thailand as part of our commitment to become a zero-carbon business by 2050.

May 2012We open our first F&F store in Saudi Arabia. The store in Haifa Mall in Jeddah is the first of the F&F franchise stores announced by us earlier this year. The move supports Tescos long-term strategy to grow highly valued international brands.

June 2012We launch Tesco Connect, a new online portal for suppliers. Designed specifically for Tesco suppliers, Tesco Connect helps suppliers identify product trends, prepare for upcoming promotions and respond quickly to changes in customer demand.

June 2012We buy WE7, a leading digital music platform which will offer customers a wider choice in how they consume music while complementing Tescos current music offerings in store and online.
