Band VII. (1994) Spalten 1429-1432 Autor: Paul-Richard Berger RAWLINSON, George, englischer Historiker und Theologe, * 23.11. 1812, + 6.10. 1902, Bruder und Biograph von H.C. Rawlinson (q.v.), dem zweiten Keilschriftentzifferer, wurde wie sein Bruder in Chadlington, Oxfordshire, geboren. Seine Schulausbildung erhielt er in der Swansea Grammar School. 1835 trat er ins Trinity College, Oxford, ein. 1840 wurde er zum Mitglied des Exeter College gewhlt. 1842 und im folgenden Jahr erhielt er den Denyer-Preis fr Verffentlichungen theologischer Artikel. Mehrere Jahre war er Tutor seines Colleges, 1852 dessen Moderator und im selben Jahr sowie 1856 dessen ffentlicher Examinator, ferner Examinator fr klassisches Altertum beim Rat fr Militr-Ausbildung. Von 1861-1889 hielt er die Position des Camden-Professors fr Alte Geschichte zu Oxford inne. 1872 avancierte er zum Kanoniker von Canterbury. Auf Vorschlag des Sprechers des House of Commons, J.E. Denison, wurde er zum Herausgeber der historischen Bcher des New Commentary on the Scriptures gewhlt. - Mit seiner bersetzung und Kommentierung des Herodotschen Geschichtswerkes, zu dem sein Bruder H.C. Rawlinson die bis dahin keilschriftlich verifizierten Realien beisteuerte, beschritt er neue Wege ernstzunehmender Wissenschaft gegenber zu seiner Zeit gngigen, unqualifiziert leichtfertigen Hypothesen. Sein gewonnenes Wissen nutzte er zu apologetischen Zwecken. Mit dem Ausrumen aberwitziger Theorien hat sich R. zweifellos auf dem Gebiet seriser theologischer Wissenschaft historische Verdienste erworben, auch wenn die Weiterentwicklung der Keilschrift-Wissenschaft viele Korrekturen erzwang. In der englisch-sprachigen Welt gewann er durch seine zahlreichen Verffentlichungen groen Einflu auf den Gebieten der Geschichtswissenschaft und der Theologie. Sein religis-apologetischer Ansatz verkehrte sich jedoch in das Gegenteil, indem inzwischen die biblische Religion sich als eine unter den anderen altorientalischen, mit der Sonderentwicklung vom Henotheismus zum Monotheismus, vom Ein-Gott zum Allein-Gott, herausgestellt hat. Auch noch jetzt htte R. auf dem Gebiet der theologischen Wissenschaft zum Ausrumen von obsoleten Theorien wie auch von Irrealismen der Dogmatik ein reiches Bettigungsfeld.
