The Mt. Laurel Sun
With the turn of the season ap-
proaching and activities changing from
swimming and barbecuing to pumpkin
carving and apple picking, Mt. Laurel
residents wont have to travel far for
some fall fun.
Living History Family Fun Day
On Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the
Jacobs Chapel Colemantown Founda-
tion, the organization leading the way
to preserve, repair and restore the his-
toric site, will hold a Living History
Family Fun Day. The purpose of this
event is to raise funds and awareness
and educate the community about the
local treasure.
Fourth-grade students from Mt.
Laurel travel to Jacobs Chapel every
year, and I can remember my kids talk-
ing about the tours there and how mem-
orable they were, Julie Williamson,
chair of the event, said. There was a
historic gem literally right down the
street that I knew nothing about.

Chapel, Jacobs Chapel Colemantown

The Lenape Regional High
School District Board of Educa-
tion, in a special meeting Monday,
Sept. 9, unanimously approved a
three-year employment contract
with the Lenape District Educa-
tion Association.
The LDEA, which represents
approximately 850 teachers and
other certificated staff, including
school counselors, child study
team professionals, media spe-
cialists, nurses and athletic train-
ers, as well as administrative sup-
port staff, interpreters and para-
professionals, ratified the con-
tract on Sept. 4.
The three-year agreement in-
cludes an average salary increase
of 2.3 percent and was updated to
be compliant with current
statutes governing public employ-
ee contributions to health insur-
ance.
It was important to get the
contract negotiations behind us
and start off the new school year
in the right frame of mind, said
LRHSD Board Member John
Heitmann, Jr., who chairs the ne-
gotiations committee. The staff
worked well with us to get this
done. And, the students and com-
munity will continue to benefit
from the quality teachers, staff
and programs the Lenape District
is known for.
According to LDEA President
John Faubl, the contract
received overwhelming support
from the associations
members.
Approving the agreement at
the start of the school year is a
big morale boost for our mem-
bers. We take great pride in our
work and now we can put all of
our energies into teaching, in-
stead of negotiating a contract,
Faubl said.

This event is a great way for the com-

will be activities for the whole family,
Williamson said.
The buildings and grounds will be open
to the public with tours led by an Under-

eachers are the backbone of a
school. They are the people
who shape our childrens edu-
cation, who help guide them through
their formative years to bigger and
better things.
A school, or school district, is only
as good as its teachers. Shiny build-
ings, the latest technology, extra-cur-
ricular offerings, a forward-thinking
administration and a supportive com-
munity would be meaningless without
good teachers.
Good teachers are the reason why
our school district is high performing,
which, in turn, is why families move
to our town.
Good teachers are the reason for
success at the next level, too. New Jer-
sey universities scored high in recent
national and regional rankings, and
their teachers are a main reason.
Princeton University was named the
No. 1 university in the nation, accord-
ing to the U.S. News & World Report.
In the North Regional rankings, the
College of New Jersey was No. 5,
Rider University and Rowan Universi-
ty tied for No. 18, and Rutgers Univer-
sity-Camden was No. 24.
Because of their value, teachers de-
serve to be treated well. They deserve
to be thanked. They deserve that apple
the kids bring them. They deserve to
be recognized and honored.
They deserve to be paid fairly, and
thats exactly what is happening lately.
The New Jersey School Boards As-
sociation recently reported that the de-
cline in pay raises is leveling off. For
settled contracts as of last spring, the
average pay increase for teachers was
2.25 percent. Thats slightly less than
the 2.37 percent average increase for
the 2012-2013 school year and a lot less
than the 4.5 percent average of five
years ago, but its still solid and much
higher than the historic lows of the
last few years.
Its good to see the teachers get what
they deserve. They deserve raises
higher than the current 1.4 percent
cost-of-living increase. They deserve to
be taken care of, as long as its not out
of whack with the rest of the working
world.
Its unfortunate that people and
health benefits are one of the biggest
costs of running our local school dis-
trict, and therefore, are one of the
biggest drivers of increased taxes.
But thats not their fault. Teachers
cant be punished for that, and more
importantly, our children cant be pun-
ished for that. We need good teachers.
in our opinion
We need good teachers
And to get good teachers, we have to pay for good teachers

What are your thoughts on teacher
raises, salaries and health benefits? How
do you value a good teacher? Let your
voice be heard on the topic through a

The Mt. Laurel Sun
For the first time in more than
13 years, Mt. Laurel will have a
new tax assessor. The committee
introduced Robert Sweeney at its
monthly meeting on Sept. 9.
Terri Paglione, who served as
the townships tax assessor since
the days of Y2K being a threat,
began working in the same posi-
tion in the city of Camden Aug. 1.
She officially left Mt. Laurel in
mid-July. Since then, the town-
ship had been conducting inter-
views for a replacement.
After an exhaustive search, we
found a candidate we felt great
about in Robert, township man-
ager Maureen Mitchell said.
Sweeney comes to Mt. Laurel
after working in Pequannock
Township in North Jersey. He
also served on the zoning board
while in Pequannock.
In other news
The council voted to approve
its continued participation in the
states Safe and Secure Communi-
ties Program. The township ap-
plied in January, but with the
state being on a different fiscal
schedule, the money is not added
to the budget until later in the
year.
The Safe and Secure Communi-
ties Program, enacted into law in
1993, is designed to provide mu-
nicipalities with funding to add
law enforcement personnel vital
to effective police operations and
other crime-related strategies as
warranted by the needs of the
community. The program allows
for the funding of additional offi-
cers or funding of law enforce-
ment support personnel, which
would free up officers for direct
law enforcement activities. Cur-
rently, there are approximately
160 municipalities receiving
funds for 345 officers and 13 non-
police support staff. According to
Mitchell, Mt. Laurel has been a
part of the program since 1998.
The township planning and
zoning boards approved a fifth

Wawa convenience store to be
constructed within Mt. Laurel,
this one with a gas station at the
intersection Route 38 and Marter
Avenue. The 5,585-square-foot
market, to be built adjacent to
Martins Liquors, will be open 24
hours a day and will employ 10
people per shift. The gas station
will have eight stations with 16
pumps. Of the sites 6.5 acres, 4.5
acres are in Mt. Laurel and 1.92
are in Moorestown. Variances
were granted to allow Wawa to
sell both food and gasoline, as
well for a faade sign to be 66
square feet instead of 40, for a
freestanding sign to be 50.8
square feet instead of 36, and for
slight changes in the allowance
for directional signs.

Burlington County clerk Tim
Tyler announced that his office
will be the first in the state to im-
plement a new document han-
dling process that will drastical-
ly reduce turn-around in record-
ing and verifying the critical in-
formation on deeds, mortgages
and other documents submitted
for recording.
Those who typically bring
documents to the clerks office for
recording will definitely notice
and appreciate the accelerated
recording, Tyler said. The tim-
ing for this couldnt be more criti-
cal.
The real estate market is
clearly on the upswing, and I an-
ticipate we will be recording
40,000 more documents that the
78,000 we handled in 2012.
Revenues from recording a
large portion of which will go to-
ward the county budget and help
reduce taxes will also increase
significantly by years end, Tyler
said. We anticipate total rev-
enues of more than $6.5 million,
or about $1.5 million more than
last year.
The new system, called double
key verification, employs an
electronic verification process,
which checks documents for such
key information as names, land
identification, document type,
and page count. Currently, the
clerks office relies on in-person
sight verification.
To put it another way, Tyler
said, the amount of time that is
required for recordings will be
significantly reduced by allowing
technology to verify documents.
We will have the flexibility to
shift employee job duties from
verification to recording docu-
ments as needed. This ability to
change employee workloads will
be extremely effective especially
now in response to the current in-
creases in recordings.
A contract was awarded by
freeholders to AMCAD of Hern-
don, Va., to implement the new
system, at a cost of 70 cents per
document. This cost is offset by
statutory user fees that the clerks
office receives from its recording
services.
County to implement new document handling
process for recording of deeds, mortgages
