Depending on who you ask, there are anywhere from 1.5 to 3 million people in the United States who would fall into the proverbial prepper category. Some can survive for weeks in the event of a massive earthquake or flood, while others are ready for post-nuclear war life if they survive the initial flash.
Level I Getting Through It Superstorm Sandy. Hurricane Katrina. Oklahoma tornadoes. These are just a few of the challenges Mother Nature has thrown at the American populace in the last 10 years. Electricity will be out for a few days, and there could be unsavory individuals lurking about on the outside. The one essential all survivalists must have in their possession is a generator. Yamaha and Honda both make very portable, lightweight, quiet 2000 watt models that are relatively affordable. This is enough power to keep your refrigerator running and keep l i g h t s o n . L a p t o p s a n d smartphones can also be charged up so children can retain a sense of normalcy by watching Break.com, SNL and other entertaining videos. Gasoline treated with a long-term storage additive like Sta-Bil should be kept in a cool, dry place like the attic or basement. A gallon of water for every family member per day should be readily available, along with enough canned food to survive a few days until the electricity is restored. And though you hope to never have to use them, make certain to have plenty of ammunition for your firearms. Level II Hunkering Down This past February, winter storm Nemo blocked off roads, cut power and stranded people in their homes for as long as a week. In addition to everything Level I preparation entails, a portable heater and hot plate powered by propane are essentials for those in colder climates. Mr. Heaters Big Buddy is one of the better units for indoor use (but still crack a window when running it to prevent potential carbon monoxide poisoning). Sleeping bags meant for 30-degrees or lower temperatures, along with thermal undergarments will help you conserve propane. A battery- powered AM/FM radio, flashlights and a set of walkie-talkies are also recommended. Level III Bugging Out World War III will happen sooner rather than later if the White House and Congressional leaders have their ways. When this occurs, its best to get as far away from cities as possible. Those with a bug-out vehicle, like a van or large SUV, are ahead of the game. Make sure your spare tire is inflated, and if possible, carry one more as the terrain off-road will be tough on them. It should be packed with all L e v e l I a n d I I equipment, along with tents, fishing gear, rope for snare t r a p s , s p a d e s , plastic sheets (for solar stills), water purification tablets, hacksaw, several knives, waterproof ma t c h e s a n d a couple deep-cycle b a t t e r i e s . Yo u should already have a few destinations in mind, such as p l a c e s y o u v e camped or seen on maps, as to where youll be living for t he f or es eeabl e future. I r i sh poet W. B. Yeats once said that l i f e i s a l o n g pr epar at i on f or s ome t hi ng t ha t never happens. Dont be the one caught unprepared w h e n n e v e r becomes now. [zengardner.com] The Prepper Pyramid Shelter: Some would argue food and water should be at the bottom, or the most important. I think shelter gets the nod f o r t h e f o u n d a t i o n b e c a u s e i f y o u r homestead is where you want it to be and fully functional, everything else should fall in line. Why do you think people put so much time and effort into moving to the redoubt, places like Idaho or Wyoming. If your s h e l t e r (homestead) is good to go food a n d w a t e r naturally should follow. You will hopefully have a well on site (or be able to access one) and youll be able to grow food a n d r a i s e animals. It all starts with shelter. F o o d a n d Water: N e x t up the pyramid a r e y o u r l i f e support items in the form of food and water. If you are prepping you need to put special emphasis here, especially considering what is going on lately with the drought and the possibility of soaring food prices. Having a stockpile of food is essential to survival when times get tough and I doubt anyone would argue against the importance of having fresh water to drink and cook with. Protection: Guns and ammo! Probably one of t h e m o s t p o p u l a r preppi ng topi cs even though it is not the most important. Remember protection isnt always about defeating a threat with firearms, its also about det ect i ng and deterring that threat. Operat i onal Securi t y (OPSEC) is crucial in helping you protect your loved ones. Be careful w h o y o u s h a r e information with and who you choose to trust. Medi cal & Hygi ene: Often overlooked in many pr epper s t as hes ar e medi cal and hygi ene supplies. An untreated infection or illness caused by poor hygiene is more likely to kill you should the SHTF versus some gun toting looter. Having lots of supplies to treat multiple types of wounds/ injuries can only be seen as the smart thing to do. Barter: If you have made progress in all of the other categories on the pyramid it might be time to start thinking about barter items. Of course you can trade anything on the list to others who might find them valuable, but your bartering stash should include a few other essentials. Alcohol would make a nice item to trade for example. Think about what people in your area might be willing to trade for and stock up on some of it. Gold & Silver: I am not a huge fan of stockpiling precious metals but I c a n n o t d e n y t h e popularity of it. If you choose to keep gold and silver on hand I would make it the lowest of your priorities, as indicated by its place at the top of the pyramid. The 3 Tenets Skills: Having all of the i t e ms l i s t e d on t he prepper pyramid will only ensure that you last a bit longer than those around you should things get crazy. You truly need skills to survive. Knowing how to grow your own food, how to hunt, how to split wood, how to fix a car, stitch a wound, and the list goes on and on. The importance of having skills cannot be stressed enough. P e o p l e : I n keepi ng wi t h s ki l l s , people or community are al ways an i mport ant consideration no matter where you are in y o u r p r e p p e r journey. Ive said it before, you have to s l e e p sometime a n d there is n o s u c h t h i n g a s a o n e m a n army. Getti ng to know your neighbors and f i ndi ng l i ke m i n d e d i n d i v i d u a l s wi l l greatly increase your chances of survival in a post SHTF scenari o. More people with more skills can only be a good thing. Health: Often overlooked, this is such an important category. Over 2/3 of the US A i s c o n s i d e r e d overwei ght . That s shameful at best. Being healthy is a daily task which permeates through all stages of preparedness. Its not just about being physically strong and being able to run 5 miles, its also about not being dependent on medication or machines (if possible). If resources become thin once treatable illnesses or conditions might become fatal. Putting in the work to stay healthy is another r e s p o n s i b i l i t y o f a prepper and should not be ignored. O n e o f t h e w a y s toxicologists warn us about the relative acute (one- t i me expos ure) danger of a chemical is to test for LD50 values - Acute toxicity, which is defined as the immediate effect of a substance as a result of a single dose, is relatively easy to study. Chronic toxicity, which results from low doses of a chemical repeated over long periods of time, is much more difficult to t e s t . To x i c i t y i s objectively evaluated on the basis of test dosages made on experimental animals under controlled conditions. The most common measure that t oxi col ogi s t s us e t o estimate the acute toxicity of chemicals on humans is the LD50 value. LD50 is a n a bbr evi a t i on f or Lethal Dose 50%. The LD50 value for a chemical is the amount of chemical that can be expected to cause death in half (50%) of a group of a particular animal species when the chemical enters the body by i ngest i on or ski n absorption. The amount required to cause death is normally related to body weight: therefore, the LD50 is expressed in LEABT-T0ZIC TFEATMENTB E0F LICE milligrams of chemicals per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg). It should be noted that no LD50 data exi sts for humans. Data from test animals is used to try to estimate the possible a c ut e t ox i c i t y o f a chemical on a human bei ng. Toxi ci t y dat a should therefore be used to evaluate the relative toxicity of various c he mi c a l s a nd which chemicals m a y r e q u i r e g r e a t e r precautions when h a n d l e d . T h e lower the LD50 value, the more t o x i c t h e substance. LD50 values have not been measured for all chemicals even some k n o w n h a z a r d o u s chemicals such as lead compounds, do not have known LD50 values. In general, chemicals with LD50 values less than 300mg/kg are considered highly toxic, those with LD50 values between 300 and 1, 000 mg/kg are considered moderately toxic, and those with LD50 val ues between 1,000 and 5,000 mg/kg are considered slightly toxic. Because LD50 val ues depend on body weight, however, many chemicals that may not harm an adult may be very toxic to a smal l chi l d. Some peopl e may become severely ill or even die at much lower dosages than an LD50 may suggest. w e e k s SHTF FREE PRESS - November 2013 7 How Lo WIpe YourselI 0II LLe 0rId There are lots of reasons to unplug from the grid. And Im not talking about the electrical grid. I mean the grid as in the whole di gi tal worl d. Maybe youve had it up to here (picture my hand at my forehead) with all the di gi t a l f l ot s a m t hat inundates you e v e r y d a y from work e- mail to social n e t w o r k n a t t e r i n g . Perhaps you need to go on t h e l a m . (We re not h e r e t o j u d g e . ) Maybe you really need to get away f r o m someone who makes you crazy or, quite seriously, f rom someone el se s abuse. Your reasons are yours. However, were here to tell you that it isnt going to be easy. Just do a search for your name on s i t e s l i k e I n t e l i u s , W h i t e p a g e s , Reputation.com, Spokeo, Zabasearch, and Pipl. Odds are youre easy to find. Just by virtue of reading this story on PCMag.com, we can guess you re probably at a computer that has an IP address t hat can be tracked, and thats where the problems begin. Cell phones , c r edi t c a r d purchases, travel check- ins, and even just a drive through a toll booth are all ways that you can be traced not just by Big Brother, but individuals as well. Skiptracers and private eyes can find what they need online to get to you if you continue to live digitally even after youve left your old life behind. So what do you do to disappear truly? I warn you in advance, its not pretty. Pi cture every movie or TV show youve s e e n a b out wi t ne s s protection programs and add in the extra dash of paranoia that comes from not having U.S. Marshalls on your side. Then get ready to live like youve ne ve r l i ve d be f or e . Whether you need to go on the run or you just want to settle down into a less digital life, heres how to get lost. Digital Dos and Donts Can you really get off the grid and still live digitally? Probably not. If you retain your digital life, youre g o i n g t o l e a v e breadcrumbs. The only way to stay completely anonymous is to turn it all off. That means no cell phones, no credit cards, no Web surfing. You cant even use a computer. However, if you cant handle that, here are some options that can keep you online and, perhaps, off the radar. 1. Lose the Cell Phone It might be your digital lifeline, but when youre trying to hide, your cell phone is a digital bulls eye. Those wi t h t he a c c e s s c a n e a s i l y triangulate your position based on your cell signal. You dont even need to make a call, as phones are always talking to towers to get the best signal available. A built-in GPS only makes it easier. If you can, take out the battery. You can always pop it back in for a true emergency. You can also l e a v e t h e p h o n e somewhere to misdirect tracers. The latter is best if youve got a phone with a battery you cant access. (Apple iPhones are not for fugitives.) You dont have to go without phone access completely. Buy pre-paid phones on the cheap at a department store or gas station. Give one to your most trusted friend or loved one and keep the other. That way, only the two of you can talk or text. In 2010, Congress proposed a bill to ban selling anonymous pre- pai d phones to f i ght terrorism. It stalled out, though, so you can still get one without showing ID in most states. For now. For an extra layer of protection, dont use the phone to make a direct phone call. Instead, use a pre-paid calling card. In addition, get some portable, solar-powered chargers for your gadgets, so you dont have to rely o n t h e o u t l e t s . Powermonkey eXplorer has plugs for just about every kind of phone and doesnt require much light to charge a device. 2. Make Purchases Using Gift Cards I t s n o t impossible to ma k e We b p u r c h a s e s while off the g r i d . Us e your cash to p u r c h a s e credi t card gi f t c a r ds , such as Visa or American E x p r e s s . T h e y r e avai l abl e j us t about anywhere. You can use them for purchases online and off and then chuck them after theyre used up. (Try to rotate where you get deliveries.) The transaction with those cards is between the retailer and credit card company, your personal details are not required and nothing shows up on a statement. 3. Forget Being Social Its time to give up on Facebook and Twitter. Seriously. Just walk away. If you cant go cold turkey, c r e a t e a n o n y mo u s accounts from remote locations. Friend a few bots to keep your number of friends/followers high for your psychological fitness, since you, by definition, dont have any friends at this point. And for the love of all thats holy, don t fri end or follow people you actually know. 4 . E r a s e I n f o f r o m Pictures If youre still in the habit of sending or posting digital pictures online, at the very least, strip out the EXIF data on the i m a g e f i l e . T h i s information includes the make of the camera, date and time the pic was taken, and, with some m o d e r n c a m e r a s , geographi cal l ocati on info. Many people believe that there are countless colloidal silver uses, especially for medical health purposes. It has been used as a general anti bi oti c by humans for centuries. However, in the last few decades, scientists have discovered that it has the ability to completely obliterate antibiotic- resistant bacteria like M R S A , S A R S (Human Corona virus) and Bird F l u ( Av i a n Influenza). Early Signs I n t he earl y 1900s, doctors w e r e v e r y aware that the liquid colloidal s i l v e r w a s highly effective agai nst even t h e m o s t d e a d l y microorganisms. They were very surprised to note that even though the silver in the liquid form wa s a s t o n i s h i n g l y e f f e c t i v e a g a i n s t dangerous bacteria, it was surprisingly gentle and non-toxic to the subject it was used on. Does Not Cause Microbial Immunity It was tested on r a b b i t s , a n d discovered that the a n i m a l w a s pr o t e c t e d f r o m multiple times the l e t h a l d o s e o f diphtheria toxin. T h e o t h e r interesting fact that p u z z l e d t h e researchers, was that no matter how many t i mes t he silver was used, it d i d n o t c r e a t e r e s i s t a n c e o r i mmuni ty i n the mi c r oor ga ni s ms killed by it, unlike t h e p o p u l a r antibiotic prescription d r u g s . Th e u s e s of colloidal silver include anti-bacterial purposes and also for increasing the e f f i c i e nc y of o t h e r antibiotics. Enhancing Antibiotic Effects It was discovered that the ant i bi ot i c ef f ect s of amoxicillin, clindamycin, erythromycin, penicillin, and vancomycin were dramatically enhanced wh e n u s i n g s i l v e r a l o n g s i d e t h e s e antibiotics. Also For Pets Other colloidal silver uses are for family pets and animals. Dogs, cats and other animals can benefit from the a n t i b i o t i c effects of the c o l l o i d a l si l ver t he s a m e a s h u ma n s . They can be given the liquid silver f or mi l d i nf ect i ons , antibiotic wound care, and more. Usually just a few drops daily until the infection clears up is sufficient. Ultra colloidal silver uses are similar to the regular colloidal silver, except t ha t t hi s i s a mor e concentrated form, and therefore, one does not need to take as much when determining the dosage. It is especially desi gned to work i n enhancing the immune system functions. Side Effects The colloidal silver side effects are almost non- e x i s t e n t . Th e o n l y condition that is said to have devel oped from i nge s t i ng t oo muc h colloidal silver is called Argyria a condition in which silver accumulates in the body, particularly o n t h e s k i n . Wh e n exposed to sunlight, the skin is said to turn a bl uish or grey col or. Although this condition is described as a cosmetic problem, there have been unrelated reports of other neur ol ogi c or r ena l complications due to use of silver. However, most of t hese report s are unsubstantiated. Sovereign Silver (colloidal silver) is m a d e w i t h 99. 999% pure silver. It can be u s e d i n a similar way to t h a t o f s t a n d a r d colloidal silver a n d h a s e x c e l l e n t results as well. Conclusion I n c o n c l u s i o n , t h e colloidal silver uses are quite varied, and seems to be clearly an extremely benef i ci al ant i bi ot i c product that has seen a great deal of success, with little to no ill effects to humans or animals. Fasting is a good pract i ce, i f properl y implemented. It promotes elimination of toxins from the body, reduces blood sugar and fat stores. It promotes healthy eating h a b i t s a n d b o o s t immunity. Here are top 10 health benefits you can derive from fasting. 1 . Fa s t i ng Pr omot es detoxification Processed foods contain lots of additives. These additives may become toxins in the body. Some o f t h e m p r o m o t e production of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Most of these toxins are stored in fats. Fat is burnt during fasting, especially when it is prolonged. And the toxins are released. The liver, kidneys and other organs in the body are involved in detoxification. 2. Fasting Rests Digestive System Dur i ng f a s t i ng , t he digestive organs rest. The n o r ma l p hys i o l o g i c f u n c t i o n s c o n t i n u e especially production of digestive secretions, but at reduced rates. This exercise helps to maintain balance of fluids in the body. Breakdown of food takes place at steady rates. Release of energy also follows a gradual pattern. Fasting however does not stop production of acids in the stomach. This is reason pat i ent s wi t h peptic ulcer are advised to approach fasting with caution. Some experts believe they should not fast. 3 . Although the MRE was a d o p t e d b y t h e Department of Defense for combat rations in 1975, they didnt become the official staple for U.S. combat troops until 1988, and became a household name during Operation Desert Storm (http:// www.mreinfo.com). The MRE is now available in civilian packaging for everyday consumption. The advantage of using MREs vs. other survival foods (including freeze dried food supplies) is that the MRE is fully self- contained including the entre, drink, desert, utensils, and even a heater to warm up the meal. Besides having the MRE f o r s u r v i v a l a f t e r h u r r i c a n e s , f l o o d s , earthquakes, or blizzards, this little food pouch has many other uses. The most common alternative use would be for camping and hiking. Using the small and lightweight MRE eliminates the need to bring dishes, utensils, and cookware to prepare a meal. This wi l l a l l ow more food to be packed in l e s s s pa c e w i t h l e s s weight. Taki ng t he M R E t o s p o r t i n g event s and m u s i c concerts i s a n o t h e r p r a c t i c a l choice. The cost of a MRE compared t o vender prices at these events, pl us t he t i me s pent standing in line or giving up a key lawn seat to get food, makes the MRE a practical alternative for these events. Fishing trips, boating excursions, cross country biking, or outings at the beach can all have uses for the MRE as well. With a shelf life of over 2 years, the MRE is something that can be stocked up for whatever the need may be. Disaster Relief Supply carries the Eversafe brand of MREs (who is a large suppl i er t o t he U. S. military). Other survival foods and supplies are also carried by Disaster R e l i e f S u p p l y f o r Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery. [prweb.com] DIsasLer FelIeI Bupply EInds New Uses for the MRE Throughout our nations history, our troops have had many different kinds of meals. From the large bulky rations during the civil war to the new Meals Ready to Eat (MRE), the food has evolved. Civil War Food and rations during the Ci v i l Wa r va r i e d by l ocat i on, qual i t y and quantity. Th e Ar my s Di vi si on of Food and Nutrition of the Medical Department conducted a survey showing that they were actually giving too much food to troops. They s ubs equent l y cr eat ed smaller ration sizes that were easier to pack around and more efficient for the troops. WWII Between 1941 and 1946, the military conducted more than 30 surveys to assess mi l i t a r y h e a l t h a n d nutrition. The military introduced different rations i n c l u d i n g K- r a t i o n s (breakf ast ), D- rat i ons (chocolate) and C-rations (lunches and dinners). These meals were pre- cooked and were easy to eat on the go. However, they were also bulky and loud. 1950s [mci ration] The military i ntroduced the MCI Military Combat Individual during the 1950s. Despite the new name they were still popularly referred to as C-rations because they resembled them in most respects. They introduced a wider variety of items and encouraged a better daily nutrition. The m i l i t a r y event ual l y phased them out for the MRE. 1980s MREs Meals Ready to Eat replaced the C ration in order to create a l i g h t we i g h t , e a s i l y transportable meal. Instead of the bulky cans, they come in metalized bags and are ready to eat i n a moment s not i ce no heating required. 2000s MREs continue to be the meal that fills our troops bellies but theyve i m p r o v e d . There has been advancements in nutrition and t a s t e . T h e suppliers have al s o creat ed MRE meals that are more friendly to campers and hikers called HeaterMeals. These h e a t e r m e a l s h a v e improved taste and larger portion sizes. [thereadystore.com] HOW TO FREE YOUR LEG FROM A BEAR TRAP 1. Move your foot and wiggle your toes. Bear traps are designed to catch and hold the leg of a bear, not cut it off. Your leg may be badly bruised, but it should not be severely injured o r a mp ut a t e d . Attempt to move your foot and toes to determine if you s t i l l h a v e circulation and to check for tendon a n d m u s c l e d a m a g e . I n general, the steel "jaws" of the trap are not sharp. Each side of the jaw should have "teeth" that are designed to allow circulation. If you cannot feel your foot or do not have r a nge of movement, you wi l l h a v e t o w o r k quickly. 2. Sit with the trap in f r o n t o f you. Sit on the ground and move the trapped leg so it is in front of you, bent slightly. The trap may be anchored to the ground with a short chain, or the chain may be attached to a loose hook. (When the caught animal runs away, the hook leaves a trail that is easy to track.) 3. Familiarize yourself with the trap. The trap will have one piece of bent steel (a "spring") to the left and another piece to the right of the jaws. The center of the trap will have a flat steel plate called a "pan." Your leg will be between the jaws, your foot on the pan. 4. Place one hand on the top of each spring. 5. Close the springs. With as much force as possible, press down hard on the springs to c o m p r e s s them. As the s p r i n g s c o mp r e s s , t h e y w i l l l o we r a n d r e l i e v e pressure on the jaws. 6. Once the j a w s a r e l o o s e , s l i p your foot out of the trap. 7. Release the springs. Take pressure off the springs slowly to avoid snappi ng t he j aws c l o s e d suddenly. 8. Check your leg f o r da ma ge . Look for b r o k e n skin and t i s s u e da ma ge . S e e k me d i c a l attention if you are i nj ur e d. Be sure to r e que s t a t e t a nus booster if metal has pierced the skin. These are very i mp o r t a n t t h i n g s t o consider. A lot of people I have asked these questions to automatically say, "We will shoot them!" Of course, any experienced survival i st knows thi s would be the last thing you would want to do for fear of attracting others to your bug out location. Not only that, wouldn't you wa n t t o s a v e y o u r ammuni t i on for home invasion against all those non preppers who think they are going to just waltz on up to your home spread and take what you prepped for? So now I ask, what other ski l l s do you have i n capturing and preparing your family a meal? There are multiple ways to obtain food in the forest and I am going to talk about a few of them today. When my husband and I discussed this, my first thought was usi ng a Compound or Cross Bow. There is a difference for those of us that are unfamiliar with Survival Hunting Without a Gun this type of hunting. If you have ever watched Walking Dead then you have seen a Cross Bow. Pros and cons of a Cross Bow hunting: Pro: Are easier to fire than regular bows. Easier to aim and shoot. Con: Slower to r e l o a d t h a n r e g ul a r bows . Sometimes louder than regular bows (not a problem for self-defense). Must cock and l oad ahead of time. All things being equal (that is, a typical 75-80lb. longbow is being compared to a typical 150lb. crossbow, both shooting missiles from 450-650 total grain weight), the longbow wins for distance...the crossbow wins for kinetic energy and yes, f l atter t raj ectory OV E R T HE S HO RT TERM. (Flatter trajectory means: FASTER FPS or the arch of the arrow after leaving the bow). The real benefit to the crossbow is controllability and the rapid single-fire potential of carrying a mi s s i l e " c oc ke d a nd locked." Like all weapons and survival gear, keep spare parts and LEARN how to use and repair your b o w ! I f y o u h a v e experience in archery, please start a discussion on hunting with bows! Traps Trapping animals for food is an invaluable skill to learn. I remember, when I was younger, trying to make a box trap to catch something with my best friend. It was so exciting maki ng t he t r ap and checking it for something every day. Of course, living in Houston, Texas at the time, probably meant we were never going to catch a thing. And we didn't, but it was fun trying. There are about 5 types of traps I can think o f t h a t a r e mainly used in trap hunting. If you can think of any others feel f r ee t o s har e them with us. Foothold Traps: The foothold is a device that has 2 jaws, 2-3 springs and a spring trigger in the center that is usually round and when stepped on the trap closes around the animals foot. They are made in all different sizes and types depending on the animal you are trying to capture. Be careful though, some states have outlawed the use of these traps so check your state for the laws on these traps. As well, animals have been known to chew off their foot to escape. Cage Traps Cage traps, like foothold traps, are intended to catch animals live. These are often baited with smaller *lure* animals, cat food, or f i s h. Ca ge t r a ps a r e cons i de r e d t he mos t humane traps because the animal is unharmed. (Until you kill it) Often these cages are used by animal control or homeowners who just want to relocate an animal verses killing it. They will usually have a trigger at the back of the cage, which causes the door to shut on the animal once inside. Some traps have a different trigger located in the middle of the trap causing a door to shut from the back and the front, leaving two points of entry for an animal. I found some reasonably priced cage traps at DHgate.com. D i r t H o l e Trapping: This requires a little bit of digging. A trapping pit is exactly what it sounds like: A hole dug in the ground to lure an animal. I could see where this could be very useful if you found a place i n t he wo ods whe r e animals cross frequently. Here is a video showing an example of dirt hole trap setting. Dead fall Traps: The deadfall trap is a heavy rock or log that is set up at an angle with sticks or tree limbs. One of these sticks serves as a trigger. Tie or connect the bait to the trigger stick and when the animal moves that stick the rock or logs fall on the animal crushing it. The figure four dead fall is probably one of the most common deadfall traps. Snares: Snares are anchored cables or wire nooses set to catch wild animals like rabbits, squirrels, foxes or coyotes. I have even found videos where they can be built to catch hogs. (I will post those videos at the end of this section.) Snares are one of the easiest traps to ma k e a n d a r e v e r y e f f e c t i ve . The s na r e tightens around the neck or b o dy of t h e a ni ma l , restraining it. [americanpreppersnetwork.com] SHTF FREE PRESS - November 2013 12 by Paul Purcell Hurricane Katrina and other recent disasters have given us yet another disaster preparedness wake-up call. Do we pay attention now or hit the snooze button again? Pushing past the debates over government reaction, we come to the bottom line conclusion that, Yes, more could have been done. In other articles well get into some of those debates, but for now, lets look at the most i mpor t ant par t of a c o m p r e h e n s i v e emergency readi ness plan, and that is the preparedness levels of individuals and families. We find that the biggest obstacles to compr e he ns i ve family emergency r e a d i n e s s education are the misconceptions surrounding the true nature of preparedness . So, to set the stage for better education, and ultimately better public safety, lets take a look at some of these myths. 1. If something happens all I have to do is call 911. Help can only go so far, or be t here so qui ckl y. Security, like charity, begins at home and the responsibility for your familys safety rests on your shoulders. This isnt to say that you shouldnt call for help when its t rul y needed, i t s to remind you that you may be on your own for while, especially if the situation is an expansive or severe one. 2. All I need is a 72-hour kit with a flashlight, first aid kit, some food and water, and a radio. Were not sure where the 72 hour figure came from, but its an extremely minimal amount of time and not very realistic. A more practical goal is to be self-sufficient for a minimum of 2 weeks. Why 2 weeks? As bad as Katrina was, there are numerous disaster and terrorism scenarios that could see substantially more damage, and a d i s r u p t i o n o f l o c a l services for three weeks or more. Also, many biological scenarios may see a 2-week quarantine. Regarding supplies and equipment, avoid the o n e - s i z e - f i t s - a l l si mpl et on l i st s and customize your disaster kit to fit your familys unique threats, needs, and assets. 3. My insurance policy w i l l t a k e c a r e o f everything. SWAT teams of insurance agents arent going to instantly rebuild your life like on TV. Insurance companies will be far more concerned about their o w n b o t t o m line than yours. In fact, many insurance companies are rewriting policies to redefine some rather common terrorism o r d i s a s t e r r e l a t e d i n c i d e n t s a s b e i n g e x c l u d e d a n d n o t coverable. Check your policies closely! 4 . G o o d preparedness is too expensi ve a n d t o o complicated. Nothing could be further from the t r u t h . Th e problem is, we haven t made preparedness a part of our overall education. We get more preparedness info on an airline flight than we get as citizens. Most of us arent taught that there are literally thousands of s ub t l e, s i mpl e, a nd economical things we can do to drastically improve our emergency readiness. The notion that it might b e e x p e n s i v e o r complicated has come f rom compani es t hat aggressively market high- priced unnecessary gear. 5. We can only form a Nei ghborhood Watch group through FEMA, the Red Cross, or local Law Enforcement. Ne i g h b o r h e l p i n g neighbor is one of our highest civic duties. No one regulates this and you dont have to get anyones permission to coordinate your safety with others. Wor ki ng wi t h t hes e g r o u p s i s r a t h e r advantageous, but not required. 6. In a Weapons of Mass Destructi on terrori st attack, were all dead anyway. WMDs might kill larger numbers of people, but t h a t d o e s n t me a n widespread destruction is a guaranteed thing. I n f a c t , f o r w i d e s p r e a d destruction, a top- grade WMD must be expertly and precisely applied under ideal conditions. This does not mean that WMDs are to be ignored or t h a t t h e y r e nothing to fear, its j ust t hat Mass Dest ruct i on does NOT me a n To t a l Destruction at all. 7. Nothing like that could ever happen here. Though some areas are more prone to certain types of disasters, say earthquakes in California, or terror attacks in New York, no area on earth is completely immune. Too, with as much as people travel, you might travel somewhere and wind up in a disaster you never thought about. 8. All I have to worry about is my own family. Technically yes, but the more youre able to care for your own family, the more you can and should help others. 9. If preparedness were really important it would be taught in school. The Disaster Dozen Top Twelve Myths of Disaster Preparedness Preparedness really is that important, but schools have only so much time and budget to teach the things they already do. This is one of the many things were trying to change, but for now, youre going to have to not onl y real i ze t he importance of thorough emergency readiness, but to teach your fami ly yourself. 10. I can get free preparedness information on the Internet. Many free sources contain really good information. However, it takes time and experience to filter t h e t r a s h f r o m t h e treasure. Worse, some of these free sites have information that could act ual l y cause more problems than they cure. This is why we spent years in gathering the over 400 additional books and training manuals on the CDs in Disaster Prep 101. 11. Full preparedness means I have to get a lot o f g u n s a n d b e a Survivalist. While personal security and family safety are valid c o n c e r n s , t h e v a s t majority of people around you will not be a threat. In fact, though looters gained a lot of media attention after Katrina, t here were far more numerous st or i es of heroism. We s u g g e s t yo u bal ance your p e r s o n a l security needs w i t h y o u r desire to help those around you and strive t o reach t he best of bot h worlds. 12. If something really bad happens, NO one will help. Theres no such thing as n o o n e h e l p i n g . However, the best thing people can do to is to prepare their families so they need as little outside help as possible. Theres always someone needier than you and the more prepared you are, the mo r e y o u f r e e u p assistance resources so they can help those less fortunate. [disasterprep101.com] SHTF FREE PRESS - November 2013 13 When a crisis is brewing, making a comprehensive list of supplies is no easy task neither is purchasing them. Because youve read through this checklist to make sure you have everything your family needs to survive a crisis. Here are our Top 20 Items to Hoard: 1. Rice Dried rice has an incredibly long shelf life, making it ideal for storage. In nutritional terms, rice is rich in starch and carbohydrates. Its also a good source of Vitamin B, iron, and protein. 2. Beans, Lentils, Black-eyed peas Legumes are a great source of protein, iron, and dietary fiber. Like rice, which theyre traditionally served with, dried beans have an exceptionally long shelf life. 3. Candles Youll probably never read a disaster preparedness list that doesnt include candles, and for good reason. A good stock of slow- burning emergency candles is a 20 ITEMS TO HOARD CHECKLIST survival essential, as well as something to light them with. 4. Cigarette Lighters I recommend stashing a combo pack of at least 6 lighters in your stockpile. In a power outage, these guys can become very, very important. The can also be very easy to misplace. 5. Pasta Pasta stores well, has a long shelf life, and its loaded with carbohydrates. Its also easy to prepare. Not to mention, pasta pairs well with lots of other items on this list. 6. Peanut Butter Hoarded by everyone from college students to doomsday survivalists, and for many of the same reasons, peanut butter is a tasty, shelf stable source of protein that pairs with lots of other items. 7. Can Opener/ Multi-Tool Its a good idea to carry a survival knife, but its agreatidea to carry a quality multi-tool, like a Leatherman. A Leatherman comes in handy almost every day under normal circumstances and could be used as a weapon in a pinch. 8. Dried fruits, such as raisins, apricots, and papaya Dried fruits are a great source of nutrients, calories, potassium, and fiber. They can also be added to nuts to make delicious trail mixes. 9. Energy bars Since these bars are typically loaded with carbs and protein by design, theyre actually a good choice for your survival storage (maximum nutrition with minimal effort and prep). 10. Canned soups and chili Canned soups are easy to prepare and offer a nice variety of ingredients for the effort. Look for low-sodium options. Premium brands may be healthier, but value brands will make your money go further. 11. Gauze/Bandages For more serious injuries, youll want to keep a supply of dedicated gauze and bandages. 12. Rubbing Alcohol Rubbing alcohol burns on an open wound, but it is a great way to sterilize instruments, surfaces, and the skin surrounding a wound. 13. Batteries Obviously, youll need to coordinate your battery storage plan with any of the flashlights, radios, or other devices you may keep in your emergency stockpile. Batteries will last longest in cool dry conditions, but should be rotated out of your emergency supply on a yearly basis. 14. Toilet Paper Running out of toilet paper is annoying in any situation. But you certainly dont want to run out in a shelter-in-place crisis scenario. My advice is to get more than enough. Life can get messy. 15. Trash Bags Trash will still need to be properly disposed of, even in a crisis. In fact, trash bags are even more important in a crisis. If running water is unavailable, trash bags may have to double as a toilet. Dont skimp here. 16. Firearms Last but certainly not least, youre going to need some type of weapon, just in case. It doesnt have to be a gun, but then again what else are you willing to risk your familys safety on, a sword? Pepper spray? 17. Drinking Water Most experts recommend a 2-week supply of water in your emergency storage. A 72-hour supply is the bare minimum. A water filter can help you extend you supply by allowing you to reuse cooking water. 18. Hand-Crank Radio Hand crank radios offer the ability to listen to important communications when power and cell networks are down. Some hand crank radios even offer a USB charging functionality. 19. Camp StoveThere are a million options available for this purpose everything from handy backpacking stoves to heavy-duty outdoor ranges but its hard to beat the old self-contained Coleman camp stove. 20. Flashlights When it comes to flashlights, I have two recommendations, and neither one is expensive. First, find a comfortable LED headlamp. Second, rather than finding the brightest, most high-tech available, invest in a Maglite that runs on simple AA batteries. [patriotcaller.com] encryptor that works with Gmail or any other Web- based text. Click the Encipher It bookmarklet you install, give the text an encryption key, watch it get garbled, and send it. The person on the other end needs the key to decipher it. 6. Hide Your IP Address A sure way to get noticed is to visit a website that collects IP addresses from its visitors; this can even h a p p e n wi t h s o me Facebook applications. Once an IP is matched to you, its simple enough for law enforcement or clever skiptracers to call the ISP assigned that IP address and match it to a user. Even if its not direct to you, it could be too close for comfort. It gets worse if youre surfing from a school or business. They can track you right to your dorm or cubicle. A proxy server can help. Tor (aka The Oni on Router) helps prevent people from seeing you, by routing your webpage requests through multiple routers on the Internet. The people at the other end will see an IP address for a router nowhere near your computer. Bundles exist for every major operating system and even some smartphones ( An d r o i d , i OS , a n d Nokia), though some are more finished than others. Theres a browser bundle and an IM bundle, and both come in multiple languages. The bundles will run from a USB flash drive, so you dont even need to use your own computer. There is a Firefox add-on called Torbutton that lets you enable Tor instantly with one click. S e v e r a l C h r o m e extensions promise the off the grid ConLInued Irom pae 7 5. Encrypt Messages You may still need to send some e-mails. Naturally, youll set up a brand new account. Even then, its best to make sure no one can read what you send. To start, use Gmail from Google since it defaults to using SSL encryption when youre on the site. Thatll help when youre using public Wi-Fi, if nothing else. For super secrecy, you need to encrypt messages you send. For a double- whammy, access Gmail using Thunderbird, but u t i l i z e GP G ( GNU Privacy Guard) to encrypt messages via the Enigmail plug-in. A s i mp l e r t o o l i s Encipher.it, an AES Ttext seeing what youre doing. Hotspot Shield will do this and its free (or pay $30 to avoid seeing their ads). Or, you could set up a r o u t e r wi t h VP N support at a remot e location and link to it direct (providing another h o p f o r p e o p l e t o contemplate). 8. Dont Look for a Tail Dont go searching for a digital tail. Its a classic way for the pursuer to get the pursuee, because anyone on the run wants to know how close they are to getting caught. If you start looking online to see what people know about you, your location, or your activities, chances are you could stumble into a honeypot meant just for you. Try not to Google yourself and stay a wa y f r o m p o s t i n g m i s i n f o r m a t i o n anonymously. 9. Don t Di s a ppea r : Deceive Former skiptracer Frank Ahearn wrote How to Disappear in 2010. But last year, he decided a new t a c t i c w a s m o r e important. All of the info people can find about you online generally comes from one sourceyou. So, an easier tactic might be to hide in plain sight by filling the Internet with incorrect information. That means using things like social networks to put misinformation out there. Reducing your digital footprint is certainly important, but if you still want to st ay onl i ne, deceiving people about where you live, your income, and members of your family, can make it hard for pursuers to find you. [healthypets.mercola.com] How to Quickly Turn a Can of Pet Food into Nutritious Treats If you buy commercial (hopefully human grade) canned food for your dog or cat, you can 'repurpose' a can for use as a supply of healthy treats. Open a can of your pet's favorite brand, preferably something with a strong aroma, and spoon out little treat sized amounts onto a baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Put the baking sheet into the freezer until the bite sized bits of food are frozen. Then move them to an airtight container and back into the freezer they go until you're ready to treat your pet to a treat! (Most dogs will enjoy the treats frozen, but you'll need to thaw them to a chewy consistency for kitties.) 0 1 ) 5 0 F e e t SHTF FREE PRESS - November 2013 15 By Dr. Becker The chicken jerky dog treat problem is several years old, has expanded to other types of pet treats, and is no closer to being solved than it was back in 2007. So it's not surprising pet owners are looking for the safest options they can find when it comes to offering treats to their dog or cat. And there's certainly no shortage of commercial pet treats on the market today. They come in every conceivable shape, size, smell, flavor, color a n d t e x t u r e . T h e challenge is finding safe, high-quality, species- appropriate treats in a sea of products claiming to be "all- natural" and "made in the U.S.A." Th e f o l l owi n g recommendations will help point you in the direction of s e l e c t i ng s a f e, wholesome treats f or your f ur r y family member. Ti p # 1 : Do n ' t Overfeed Treats to Your Pet Dog or cat treats even very heal thy ones should not constitute more than 15 percent of your pet's daily food intake, and preferably less than 10 percent. And it's best to limit them to training and behavior rewards, as a bedtime ritual, or as a "time to get in your crate" enticement - things of that nature. Treats should be offered primarily as rewards during house training, obedience training or other similar activities, and not because the rest of the family is sitting down with a bowl of popcorn to watch a movie. Tip #2: Treats Should Be Sourced in the U.S. and Made in the U.S. L e g a l l y, p e t f o o d manufacturers can make the "made in the U.S.A." claim as long as the product was assembled in this country even if t he i ngr edi ent s ar e i mpor t e d. So whe n you're shopping for safe treats, it's not enough that a product claims to be made in the U.S. You want to be sure all the ingredients originated here as wel l .Ti p #3: Treats Should Be High- Quality A high-quality pet treat will not contain grains or unnecessar y f i l l er s , rendered ani mal by products, added sugar (sometimes hidden in ingredients like molasses and honey), chemicals, artificial preservatives, or ingredients known to be highly allergenic to pets. These criteria rule out the vast maj ori ty of commercial pet treats on the market. As i s the case wi th commercially available pet foods, high-quality pet treats aren't likely to be found i n bi g-box stores, large pet store c h a i n s , y o u r l o c a l supermarket, or your vet's office. Your best bet shopping locally is to visit small, independent p e t s t o r e s w i t h knowledgeable staff who can answer customer q u e s t i o n s a n d a r e c o m p e t e n t t o recommend products that make sense for individual pets. Ti p #4: Off er Fresh Human Foods as Treats I recommend avoiding all grain-based treats. Your d o g o r c a t h a s n o biological requirements for the carbs in these treats, and in addition, t h e y a r e p r o - inflammatory. Consider instead living "human" foods. Many cats enjoy bits of zucchini or cantaloupe. You can also try offering some dark, green leafy veggies as treats for your kitty. It might even keep her away from your houseplants! Excellent training treats for dogs include frozen peas and raw almonds, cashews and Brazil nuts (but NEVER macadamia nuts).
