Advice for Facilitators

Important Note: Training Context This competency unit covers the splicing and termination of service provider optical fibre cable. This can be set in a number of contexts. In the context of broadband installer training this is taken to refer to the fibre lead-in to the customer Optical Network Termination (ONT). It depends on there being a number of factors in place including an ONT to receive the optical cable termination, an aerial or underground access path such as a catenary for aerial or a conduit for underground. This unit, in this training context, is not intended to assess a persons underground or aerial cabling these are covered in other units including ICTTC131A Install an above ground equipment enclosure or their ability to work on the trunk carrier network. Some enterprise-specific factors such as cable type, terminators and the cable pathway may need to be factored into the delivery plan. It may be necessary to add further enterprise-specific training to cover all aspects of enterprise policy and procedure.

Recommended reading
Some recommended reading for this unit includes: NBN websites such as the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy <http://www.dbcde.gov.au>. Publications released by National Broadband Network stakeholders, such as the NBN Corporation, ACMA or major telcos.

Session 3. Installation Practices

This session addresses the installation of cable to the customer premises. It focuses on the role of the optical fibre specialist in testing and ensuring the integrity of the fibre being installed. It includes consideration of installation methods above ground and underground. (See note at the start of this guide on Training Context). Time 2 to 4 hours Requirements Sample of optical fibre cables of various types Access to installation sites or suitable simulations to observe placement and hauling of cable Learning Activity: Cable structures and usage Explain the structure of different types of optical cables in terms of it tensile strength and the standards that must be met for the purposes of hauling. Learning Activity: Pre-testing optical fibre on drum and installation and testing practices Outline the purpose of pre-testing and the standards that must be met particularly for customer premises installation. Learning Activity: Fibre Optic Installations Explain the aerial and underground installation processes. This should include direct observation of these types of installation as a site visit to an installation or a suitable simulation wherever possible. Remember that this unit does not require the learners to haul and install cables specifically. Assessment 1 and Enterprise Information At this point, and in association with the site visit, discuss the administrative requirements of the installation process.
