1 Introduction
The larger the group for which it is made possible to access a service, the more
accessible the service is considered to be. Accessibility is often associated with
people having disabilities requiring special considerations such as the use of
assistive technologies.
Usability for websites and software applications revolves around the ease of
use and level of satisfaction that a particular group of users achieve while
carrying out tasks. The better the usability, the higher will be the software's
acceptance rate [1] among users.
A review of two software applications, namely: Windows Live Messenger &
Mozilla Firefox and two websites: Government of Mauritius' web Portal & Asda's
E-Commerce site will be performed with emphasis on the above-mentioned
qualitative properties which are accessibility and usability.

2 Software Applications
The basic principles of accessibility and usability should always be applied by
adopting a “user-centred” approach during the design-phase [2] of software
applications. We have proceeded with the accessibility assessment by
reviewing features that enhance the applications' accessibility and areas that
can be problematic for disabled users. To have an idea about the ease of use of
the two software, we have taken into consideration the five main heuristics
that are well-known for gauging usability which are: learnability, efficiency,
memorability, error, satisfaction.

2.1 Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger v8.5 (Instant Messaging Software)

The developers have put considerable efforts in incorporating accessibility
features in the software commonly referred to as Live messenger. Menu items
are fully accessible using both keyboard short-cuts and mouse . Font
properties are customisable by setting properties such as colour and size.
However users can only modify their own font attributes and are unable to do
it for the ones they are communicating with. Backgrounds can also be set to
match by users but contrast adjustment is not available. The use of both

Page 2/40
animating pop-ups and customisable sound alerts make it possible for visually
impaired and deaf people to benefit from this instant messaging software. The
different options available for input and output make Live Messenger accessible
to a wide range of disabled people. Normal text input through keyboard can be
used by people having difficulties to speak. An option is provided to use
handwriting via a mouse or graphic tablets which proves useful to those not
comfortable with keyboards. Voice calling allows people with disabilities such
as motor-related and blindness to communicate with ease through
microphone. The video option proves very useful for those that can only use
sign-language.
Using the application is intuitive and very rarely do users require the use of
documentation to start using Live Messenger. Contacts can be listed in user-
defined groups and in accordance to their online/off-line status indicated by
green and grey colours. This can be an issue for people having difficulty
distinguishing colours. A search facility enables searching contacts and another
one for web searching. The former increases users' efficiency when they have
to find a particular contact. A problem though is the short-cut icon used to add
a new contact, it is so small that it requires considerable effort to be located
.Double-clicks are used to launch a conversation window with a particular
contact and the focus is automatically set to the typing area. The conversation
logging system helps users remember about the last conversation they had
with someone and as a bonus, a small part of the past conversation together
with a link to view full past conversation is already included when a fresh chat
window is open. Personalised nicknames can be added to everyone in the
contact list to facilitate remembering who is who. To that goal, a display
picture also helps a lot. There are some instances where messages are not
delivered for no particular reasons and users are left in the dark as to why
message delivery has failed. Animated advertising banners are quite disturbing
to users specially those suffering from seizures but cannot be turned off.
Overall, users are fairly satisfied with Live Messenger according to informal
interviews we performed.

Page 3/40
2.2 Mozilla Firefox v3.0.5 (Web browser)
Being gateways to the World Wide Web for millions of Internet users including
disabled people, accessibility is crucial. In this optic, a lot of work has been
done to tackle accessibility issues. Font properties from webpages can be
overridden with users' own choices. This includes setting a minimum font size
and also disabling style-sheets. Zooming for a whole page and for text only is
available thus helping those with vision-related disabilities. Images, Java
applets and JavaScript can be easily disabled from the menu options. These
features are specially useful for surfers who are using screen readers. All menu
options are accessible through keyboard short-cuts [4].
The basic components needed to start using the browser is easy to find and
thus surfers can use the software in very little time without the need for
reading user manuals. But in case the use for some advance features is
important, guidance is readily available from the help menu. Firefox has been
popular for the use of 'tabs' which are basically webpages opened within the
main browser window and are accessed by clicking on different tabs. This avoid
users the nuisance and confusions often caused by sudden change of windows.
The search facility provided by the browser helps both disabled and normal
people to locate specific terms within a web-page and the result is highlighted.
Quick one-click bookmarking of pages also means users no longer need to
remember lengthy website addresses. Short-cuts to webpages can be added
by click-dragging to the browser's menu-bar.
Application crash occurs very rarely but when it does, the next time it is re-
launched, the user is given the option to reload all webpages that were
previously opened at the time of crash. This facility is also available to those
who accidentally close the browser; they are given the option to save its
context.
As for user satisfaction, the increasing share of Firefox in terms of browser
adoption speaks for itself: from less than 4% in 2005, it is more than 20% to
this date [8].

Page 4/40
3 Websites
Many believe that making websites accessible usually means sacrificing the
fancy looks and losing potential visitors. But the reality is the reverse; making
website more accessible tends to increase user fidelity. Usability is also
important for websites since if a user finds it difficult to perform a task on a
website, he/she will simply leave.

Since websites can have hundreds of web pages, we have only taken samples
of 12 pages which are most likely to be accessed. Manual design reviews have
been performed as well as the use of web-based tools to validate codes and
style sheets. Accessibility assessments, web browsers and Operating Systems
compatibility checks have also been performed online. Screen-shots are
available in the appendix.

3.1 Government of Mauritius' Web Portal

Manual review of the website revealed serious accessibility barriers on almost
all the webpages in the website despite a link labelled “Accessibility
Guidelines“on the homepage indicating how the website has been designed
with accessibility in mind. That link itself makes use of JavaScript to launch a
pop-up. Same situation for menus on the different pages which are completely
invisible if JavaScript is disabled and in case it is not, menu items are
accessible only through mouse pointer. Very few images make use of the alt
tag to provide a description. Users have to register for some services and on
the registration page, there is an image “captcha” without any audible
alternative. Notable inconsistencies exist in the design of different sections of
the website along with the spawning of new windows when links are clicked
which is very disorienting. Using an online tool, the following results have been
obtained:

Page 5/40
Average Average Remarks
Errors/pag Warnings/page
e
Accessibility Check [9] 33 - Most common problems being use of
tables for layouts and missing alt
tags
(X)HTML Validation [12] 69 37
CSS Validation [11] 30 40
Browser and Operating OK - As long as the browsers have
System Compatibility JavaScript enabled, the pages load
(using Browsershots[10] ) well. However, the web designers
recommend an old version of
Internet Explorer to view it.

In terms of usability, the links of each webpage consists of a lengthy string of

random characters which makes it completely impossible for normal surfers to
use the link in order to derive their location within the website. The main pages
are overloaded with links to resources that even regular visitors will feel lost.
Fortunately a search facility is provided to search within the website. However,
it is only a general search and does not provide users the opportunity to refine
their search through parameters. Extensive use of PDF documents are made in
the website and have been causing browser-crashes. Finally the aesthetic
feeling of the website is very bad and inconsistent throughout.

3.2 Asda's Website (E-Commerce)

The website must have been designed with accessibility in mind since the
online accessibility tool [9] found no accessibility errors on more than 50% of
the pages as shown in the table below:

Page 6/40
Average Average Remarks
Errors/page Warnings/page
Accessibility Check [9] 4 - No accessibility errors on more than
50% of sample pages were
uncovered. And the average of 4
errors was minor problems such as
no labelling for a few single
checkboxes and missing titles for
frames.
(X)HTML Validation [12] 2.5 - There were between 0 to 5 errors per
page. But with a few exceptions
reaching up to 205 errors caused by
a repetition of the same error.
CSS Validation [11] 7 483 Few CSS errors were found and the
483 warnings are due to the CSS
Validation tool detecting the use of
the same colour for text and
background in some location. But in
fact this is not a real problem.
Browser and Operating OK - No Problem detected.
System Compatibility
(using Browsershots[10] )

Concerning usability, simplicity played in the site's favour. Users can easily
browse their way through the different categories and carry out transactions
with ease. A registration facility saves regular customers' time by storing their
details and not requesting it for subsequent visits. The search provided is also
useful and provides alternative search terms in case no result is found. A more
advanced search facility enabling the specification of more characteristics
about products is desirable.

4 Assistive technology description and analysis

Despite efforts in making software and websites accessible by including
features such as font control, use of style sheet, 'alt' tags and multiple input-
output modes, we rarely achieve a universal design whereby anybody with any
disability can make use of a service without any additional assistive
technology.
Using Live Messenger alone by a visually impaired person can be quite
challenging if the one to whom he/she is communicating with, is unaware of

Page 7/40
his/her state. And according to Lynn Schneider [3], the software is very helpful
for blind people who however have to use screen reader software. This raises
an issue of compatibility between the screen reader and Live Messenger. The
most common one being used is JAWS [13].
For both websites reviewed above, they will still prove very challenging if not
impossible for a completely blind person to browse through. Once again, a
screen reader software will be very helpful. In addition, a refreshable Braille
display can also be used. For cases where the font size is too small and
zooming may prevent users from having a good overview, screen magnifier
software can be used. In most operating systems, a free magnifier is already
provided. The use of PDF files in the Government of Mauritius websites can
also cause problems. In order to read these files, they will first have to be
downloaded and opened outside the browser in order for screen readers to
process them correctly.
When choosing assistive technologies, people are faced with a hard reality:
they can cost quite a lot. Among screen readers, JAWS [13] is the most
commonly used and is compatible with Live Messenger, however its cost is
quite prohibitive.
The use of free Accessibility extensions in the form of add-ons can be used to
help disabled people using the Firefox browser to surf the Web. One example is
Firefox Accessibility Extension [5]. It is designed to make “it easier for people
with disabilities to view and navigate web content”
It also helps developers to assess their websites' accessibility by producing
reports. For people with disabilities, it can extract headings and titles from a
page, enabling direct navigation to these areas. Page and colour contrasts can
also be easily edited with it along with enhanced keyboard navigation through
a short-cut key-combination.
Unfortunately if someone is completely blind, audio output will be needed for
surfing. Firefox provides a compatibility list of compatible assistive technologies
including screen reader software [6].The one which we have found to be the
most suitable audio output software option for Firefox is FireVox [7] which is a
free extension for the Firefox browser and is compatible with Windows,

Page 8/40
Macintosh and Linux platforms. FireVox implements aural style sheets, that is,
it can handle CSS 3 Speech properties which are quite rare among other
screen readers and considerably improve the quality of audio output.

5 Conclusion
Although considerable effort can be put into making websites and software
applications accessible, there will always be cases that will require some kind
of assistive technology. Another barrier is that there exists no single assistive
technology which is compatible with everything, thus a single user may have to
use a combination of such technologies instead. It has also been shown that
websites are not always designed to standard thus making it even harder for
people with disabilities. An in-depth usability review should normally involve
user-tests and surveys which will provide a clearly picture about the ease of
use of the software and websites analysed but this has not been performed
due to time and resource constraints.

The main window before sign-in is shown below:

The main problem here is the lack of contrast which users don't have any
option to modify.

The window when the software is signed in:

The window above is when the messenger is in signed-in mode. Notice the
icons on the left and the advertising banner at the bottom. These can often
confuse users. The text size cannot be changed as well. But the blue
background can be set as another colour.

Appendix B. Mozilla Firefox
The use of tabs shown below:

The options menu:

• Allow user to select their own font properties including size and colour
• Allow the prevention of automatic image loading on websites , users with
screen readers can therefore listen to the alt tag contents instead, this
also make downloading of pages faster.
• Allow disabling of Java applets so that users don't have problems
navigating with keyword since some applets automatically set focus to
themselves and prevent it to be broken. Javascript can also be restricted
at varying levels.

Page 20/40
The Search Facility:

The Find bar, can be invoked with the short-cut Ctrl + f and used to search for
particular words in the document and not distracting user with pop-ups.

Other Short-cuts:
Firefox provides very useful short-cuts for both keyboard and mouse
navigations which can be accessed here:
http://www.accessfirefox.org/Firefox_Large_Print_Keyboard_and_Mouse_Short
cuts

Zooming:

Firefox allow zooming of the whole page and also text only. The page style can
also be overridden and viewed without style sheet.
Some websites may still prove a challenge to navigate on with the accessibility
features. Accessibility extensions in the form of addons can be used with
Firefox. One example is Firefox Accessibility Extension V1.4.5 developed by
S.Foltz et al. It is designed to make “it easier for people with disabilities to
view and navigate web content” http://firefox.cita.uiuc.edu/
It also help developers to assess their websites' accessibility by producing

Page 21/40
reports. For people with disabilities, it can extract headings and titles from a
page and enable direct navigation to these areas. Page and colour contrasts
can also be easily edited with it. And this extension is free, so it makes itself a
must-have for anybody wishing to enhance their web experience specially
people having some disabilities.
Unfortunately If someone is blind completely, it means that the browser itself
is now enough. Websites will have to be viewed using a screen reader. Firefox
provides a compatibility list of screen readers available
here:http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Assistive+technology+compatibility
The one which we have found to be the most suitable option for Firefox is Fire
Vox which is an extension for the Firefox web browser and is compatible with
Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms. Fire Fox implements aural style
sheets that is it can handle CSS 3 Speech properties which is quite rare among
other screen readers. The best part of it, is it is completely free of cost.

The rate of adoption of Firefox speaks for itself:

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market_adoption_of_Mozilla_Firefox
From less than 4% in 2005, 3 years later , it has been adopted by more than
20% of web-surfers to this date.
