Kelly Kulick and Osku Palermaa Elected to World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame
ARLINGTON, Texas - Osku Palermaa of Finland and American Kelly Kulick have been named as the recipients of the 2013 World Bowling Writers (WBW)) International Bowling Hall of Fame awards. The WBW merged with the Bowling Writers Association of America in 2012 to form the International Bowling Media Association (IBMA). The WBW Hall of Fame award was retained by the newly-formed organization. Palermaa, from Espoo, a suburb of Helsinki, won his first medal, a humble bronze, in the Team event of the 2005 World Championships, but over the next eight years garnered nine first place finishes, all except one in singles play, the exception: a gold in Team in the recent 2013 WTBA World Championships in Henderson, Nevada. For three consecutive years, 2007-2009, he topped the prestigious European Tour Rankings. He was also runner-up twice and third once. With five points awarded for a gold medal, three for silver and one for bronze, Palermaa amassed a record total of 66 WBW Hall of Fame points and is the first twohanded delivery bowler to be inducted. Palermaa was more than pleased to hear of his award, stating: "I'm really honored! Truly amazing. One of those things you work hard for! Great news after a great month of August: World Games gold and Mixed Doubles fourth; World Champs Doubles Silver and Team Gold is tough to beat for few weeks." Kulick, from Union Township, New Jersey, has an international medal career spanning 14 years, beginning with gold in Singles and bronze in both Team and Trios in the 1999 WTBA World Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Then, as a professional, Kulick was denied a place on Team USA so did not qualify for international duty, but when the WTBA changed their rules to allow all players to bowl for their respective federations and participate in all international tournaments, Kelly resumed her places on podiums taking gold in both All Events and Masters of the 2008 American Zone Championships in Santiago, Chile, then gold in the Team event of the 2011 WTBA Women's World Championships in Hong Kong, China. The inaugural WTBA 2012 World Singles Championship in Limassol, Cyprus saw her clinch the women's gold. 2013 brought continued success with gold and silver in the World Games in Colombia and then two silver medals in Team and Trios in the 2013 WTBA World Championships in Henderson, Nevada. Her WBW points total is 44. After being informed of the award, Kulick commented: "Thank you for this honor. I look forward to the presentation." Both will be presented with their awards during the World Series of Bowling in October at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
