My Concrete Experience

Among the four of you, who is more inclined to be an essentialist, perrenialist, progressivist, essentialist or behaviorist? Based from the table shown above, it shows that S1 is inclined to be an essentialist, perennialist and behaviorist whereas progressivist is S2 and T2. T2 is also inclined to be an essentialist.

My Observations
Visit a teacher in a school and observe what school/classroom activities reflect his/her philosophy of education while she is teaching. Identify and describe teachers action or behavior and match each with the identified educational philosophy. 1. Observed actions of a teacher who is progressivist: The teacher gave an activity sheets in order to know whether the students understand the lesson or not. The teacher divided the students in a group to have an activity on how to focus on the microscope. The teacher let the students practiced focusing the microscope in their own. The teacher let the students to do their activity. The students done the scraping of plant tissue particularly the onion bulb themselves while the teacher only facilitating them. The teacher was rooming around the classroom to see if his students were doing right procedures. The teacher let his students reported in front the Venn diagram they made in comparing the plant and animal cells.

Progressivism organizes schools around the concerns, curiosity, and real-world experiences of students. The progressive teacher facilitates learning by helping students formulate meaningful questions and devise strategies to answer those questions. Walk into a progressivist classroom, and you will not find a teacher standing at the front of the room talking to rows of seated students. Rather, you will likely see students working in small groups, moving about and talking freely. The teacher is walking around the room, bending over to talk with individual students and small groups, asking questions and making suggestions. Its a sense that the last thing on his mind is the standardized state test scheduled for next week. Progressivists build the curriculum around the experiences, interests, and abilities of students, and encourage students to work together cooperatively. Teachers feel no compulsion to focus their students' attention on one discrete discipline at a time, and students integrate several subjects in their studies. 2. Observed actions of a teacher who is a behaviorist: Students recited in the class voluntarily

Teacher commended correct answer by saying Very good Teacher gave emphasis on the proper procedures inside the classroom Having a ready equipment not just a model e.g. Microscope Facilitated fairly the students with their activity The teacher kept reminding the student on what they need to know. The teacher challenged other group to participate. The teacher signaled the students when to begin and finish the activity by ringing a bell. Learning through positive reinforcement The teacher motivated the students by showing a glass of water in the class and asks if it is safe or not to drink even its from the well.

As a behaviorist, you believe that learning takes place when knowledge is separated into smaller bits. Students are rewarded for successful answers. Instruction focuses on conditioning the learner's behavior. Learning involves repetition and association and is highly mechanical. Behaviorist leaning teachers focus on a new behavioral pattern being repeated until it becomes automatic. (Schuman) Behaviorists simplify lessons so that the students focused attention and the teachers curriculum goals remain specific. Because of the efficiency of a behaviorist lesson plan in terms of planning, execution, and assessment, the teacher has more time for alternate classroom tasks. The clear structure of a behaviorist lesson can be especially beneficial for students who are easily distracted or over-stimulated. However, the categorical focus of behaviorism can be wearisome for students in need of variety and stimulation.

My Reflections
Based on your concrete experience and the actions of the teacher you have observed, how important is your philosophy of education to your future career as a teacher? How would your experiences and observations contribute to your becoming a teacher? Teaching is both an art and a science. William Butler Yeats said, Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of the fire. I believe education is both lighting of the flame and the filling of the pail. The art of education lights the fire. Students learn best the things they love. Showing students how to love learning is powerful, unending, and essential gift. However, to be effective, knowledge needs to be passed scientifically (the filling of the pail) I believe students love to learn. My intent as a future educator is to have clear standards, evaluate students against those standards and continue to iterate learning until mastery levels are reached in all reasonable cases. I believe that students are all eager of and entitled to a nurturing and supportive environment. Mostly, as a future educator I believe each student is an individual deserving of my best efforts and support and that the students and I share an obligation to find ways for them to gain mastery. I believe a teachers duty is to provide students with the essentials and tools, catalyst and opportunities to explore their higher purpose. The teaching of philosophy of education encourages the learners to inculcate a high level of ability in philosophical enquiry related to educational issues. In addition, it helps students to familiarize themselves with philosophical factors that influence theories, practices and methods of education. Furthermore, philosophy of education encourages students to be open minded, that is, not to imprison the self within the sphere of already known facts. Philosophy of education is important to me to my future career as a teacher because it provides with the basis for making my decision making concerning with works. It also helps me to develop a wide range of interest, attitudes and values connected to my professional life. As a teacher I have to be positive, to have a good curriculum for the class, make the class fun, so the student would have fun, by enjoying and learning at the class. A good teacher is the one that a student appreciates, respect because the teacher makes them feel comfortable in class. An educator should be someone who has passion for what they do. An educator is someone who loves their students as individuals, and appreciates them. Takes time to get to know them, and is interested in what they want to become, and help them in the direction to get the correct education. As a future educator, I have come to realize that I believe in the theory of progressivism, I believe that progressivim is student-centered curricula. I like how this theory makes the

students develop and also develop with others in group work. I know that as a future teacher I want to be able to develop more on this and use this theory. This is a great philosophy to go by. I learned that as a progressivist teacher, it is all thinking outside the box and knowing how to go above and beyond and I am all about doing that to help my students as future teacher. Also, I am a social type learner so I love the way curriculum works with it being centered on groups and working with the physical world. Behaviorism is definitely used in classrooms every day. Behaviorism is based on rewards and punishments. As a future teacher, if you provide positive reinforcement or rewards whenever students perform a desired behavior then it will result in them performing the behavior on their own. Behaviorism is really centered on stimulus response and conditioning. We all heard growing up that practice makes perfect, and in behaviorism, that is the goal. It is through a balance of several different types of conditioning and reinforcement that educators try to encourage learning, promote interest in the subject, and maintain appropriate classroom behaviors. Elliot and Busse (1991) indicate that rewarding students aids the reinforcement of good classroom behaviors and creates an atmosphere conducive to learning. My philosophy of education serves as my guide to become effective and efficient teacher. This will help me also to be a better teacher for the future leaders of our country. They say that experiences are the best teacher, so I strongly believe that this will help me a lot to be a better person/teacher. The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying afterwards-Anatole France.

Global Teacher: Global Citizen of the World A global teacher is a competent teacher who is armed with enough skills, appropriate attitude and universal values to teach students with both time tested and as well as modern technologies in education in any place in the world. A global teacher is someone who thinks and acts both locally and globally; embraces the worlds rich variety of ways of life; understands how this world is interconnected; is committed to making the world a more equitable place; believes in education of sustainable development; has professional and personal skills to share and to learn; brings the world into their classroom, school and community and can inspire others act as Global Teacher. Conrado de Quiros said Being world-class teacher doesnt mean going internationally and showing our best out there. Being world-class is passion and commitment to our profession; being world-class is giving our best to teaching. Being world-class starts right inside the classroom. This quotation implies that becoming a world-class or global teacher starts with doing the right things and the best thing right inside the classroom. As a future educator, I will prepare myself by giving my best shot in the class I will be handling. Because of education have four common grounds, and then any classroom will do as a training ground for becoming a global teacher. With the advancement of technology, I will also integrate technology-based as my strategies I teaching for the reason that I consider students are inclined in technology. Technology can play a big part in learning since there are many features of technology that can provide manipulative, interactive and experiential activities. Moreover, these are the interests of most todays students so teachers might as well make use of technology as their advantage in motivating the students to learn. During those times computers are only used for computing and storing data, but right now having a computer and knowing how to use it is just as necessary as having to put a food on the plate for your dinner. Computers proved to very helpful and useful for education that integration has been the topic during seminars and workshops and how can we utilize it to help our students face the world surrounded by modem technology. It is true that technology has its plus and minuses. But we just have to know our limitations in using these modern technologies. These are made to make our life easier and comfortable. We are human beings and we are given the mind so we can manipulate things accordingly. Moreover, because of these trends in teaching, we also allow ourselves to grow. We are no longer stagnant to the traditional methods. We are now more open to new ideas that would not just increase our students learning but also ourselves. As we open ourselves to new fad, we can no longer feel outcast we are part of the modern world and we are now all ready to face a more challenging role and that is to become the teacher of tomorrows youth. Why would we keep

ourselves inside a nutshell when we can explore the world? The world is at our advantage, the world is waiting for us. Given these facts, we are now more than ready to call ourselves not just modern teachers but GLOBAL TEACHERS. Because global teachers do not just use modern ways of teaching or utilize modern devices for improved learning, but also has a heart a heart that tenderly cares for every individual and a hand that gently holds every learners mind to be a great contribution to the world. A student who is not just a product of modern world but can also be considered a GLOBAL CITIZEN OF THE WORLD. Global education is a concept that brings us to understand the connectivity of each member citizen in the planet. The advancement of technology shrank the world to s size that everyone can be reached. Because of this development, we have to learn the diversity or differences cultures in order to address the global standards for education set by the United Nations. Global education requires future teachers the skills for the 21 st century so that all will be ready to play a significant role to provide educational access to all types of learners all over the world. This teacher is global teacher, and there are millions of global teachers needed now and in the future.

The Future Professional Teacher Teaching is a challenging task. One shall perform his duty with the highest degree of excellence, professionalism, intelligence, skill, and with utmost devotion and dedication to ensure the quality of education. A student is nothing without his/her teacher. Without them we would know nothing and be nothing. The teacher is one that helps the student understand everything around him/her. The teachers pride and glory is to know that he/she helped create a student that would somebody live a successful life. When I become a Professional Teacher, I should be an effective and efficient teacher. I should possess leadership qualities. I must have great confidence and strong will power to obtain the best results from my students and I should also master my subject, full command over knowledge. Higher degrees are necessary to become a professional teacher but to become a great teacher, loyalty and sincerity to profession is required. If being a teacher, one is sincere to his profession; he will do his maximum effort to make himself successful. An as we all know that effort can never be squandered so a hard working loyal teacher will must get a reward by his students .As a professional teacher, I should have also 5 qualities of a good teacher. First quality is the passion in teaching. The passionate teacher caters and responds for the learners needs in learning especially those learners who experienced difficulties to learn. Teaching is no small undertaking, but I am confident that I will remain dedicated, excited and energetic. The second quality is the humor. Humor or humorous can be defined as something that is funny, eliciting smile, a laughter as well as amusing reaction. Having sense of humor is an essential quality in teaching relation between the teacher and the learner. Third is the possession of good values and attitudes. Because teachers serve as role models for their students, they should see a good values and attitudes to be able to establish a positive social learning among the students. The fourth quality that a teacher should possess is the patience. Patience in teaching can be defined as an uncomplaining nature, having self-controls as well as persistence. Teachers should possess their nature as they deal with different student with different personalities and nature. And lastly the fifth quality is the enthusiasm. Enthusiasm in teaching can be defined as the eagerness as well as the excitement to teach. Teaching is the noblest profession, an unforgettable quotation that a teacher lives by. It is even stated in Article IV Section 1 of the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. As teachers, we are responsible for manifesting enthusiasm and pride in teaching as a noble calling. As a professional teacher, it is important that I develop content knowledge of the lesson topics and pedagogical content knowledge so that I can relate and teach this knowledge to my students. Further richness is added to these lessons through the use of authentic learning experiences; examples, case studies, models. General pedagogical knowledge is also important so that I can apply procedures to manage my classroom with minimal disruptions and adequately set up my classroom environment for maximum learning. A crucial part in becoming a professional teacher is my use of reflective practices and self-evaluation of my lesson plans to decide whether or not future adaptations and improvement

is required. Reflective practice requires critical appraisal of experiences, and the understanding we gain through it adds to our knowledge. (Ashby 2006). It is a famous saying that A teacher is like a light-house which shows the right path to people in darkness take the examples of great teachers in history like Socrates, Aristotle, Luqmaan, Christ and Hazrat Muhammad who changed the world and still their teachings are affecting people throughout the world. So to be a teacher is in fact a great responsibility and he should try to possess the qualities of such great people though its not easy.
