Condition Classifications G - Good condition F - Fair condition P - Poor condition M - Missing Treatment Classifications 1. no intervention 2. clean, scrape & repaint (Repair Class I) 3. minor repairs (re-glaze & re-putty) (Repair Class II) 4. major repairs - replace wood (Repair Class III) 5. reproduce/ replace

Numbering Systems and Codes Simple method N/2/10/A/2 elevation/story/#/condition/ treatments Common Conservation Strategies Sash- repair or replace decayed or broken rails, muntins, stiles as required - duplicate molding profiles, dimensions, species, joinery Glass - replace broken & missing panes (maybe replace cracked glass) Putty - replace missing and deteriorated putty (if more than 1/3 poor, consider replacing all) Paint - refinish deteriorated coatings to protect wood & putty, slightly lap paint onto glass to obtain seal Balance system - replace broken or frayed sash cord Functionality - remove excess paint from sash sides, frames, parting beads - plane only if necessary to relieve structural changes - coat bare wood with wax or clear sealant - adjust locks & latches & counter-balance systems - open weep holes at outside sill Sills- refinish to keep out moisture - heavy checking or decay may require consolidation and filling prior to painting, in extreme cases sill may require replacement Interior sash weather strip to insure tight seal to inside, heated air Storm windows inspect & repair to improve functionality

exterior - (little infiltration, positive drainage) interior - tight air seal ( allow outside sash to breathe) Weatherization felt vinyl strips metal strips foam strips clay cord removal caulking Replacements only if missing or beyond repair Document existing conditions If necessary, match dimensions, design, molding profiles for replacement Document existing designs 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. pattern of the openings and their size proportions of the frame and sash configuration of window panes muntin profiles types of wood/ metals paint colors characteristics of the glass associated details (shapes, trim, frames, interior and exterior)
