World War II lasted from 1939 to 1945. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million people, from over 30 different countries, serving in military units. Over 16 million Americans served in the United States military, with 290,000 killed in action and 670,000 wounded. As the years since this massive global conflict slip by, the number of survivors diminishes. These courageous men and women pass away each and every day. The mission of the Big Sky Honor Flight is to recognize American Veterans for their sacrifices and achievements by flying them to Washington, D.C., to see their memorial at no cost. to WWII and terminally ill veterans from all wars. Joe Carson and Cap Holter, local World War II Veterans, were honored with this trip September 8 & 9. Joe is 90 years old. He served with the Army Corps of Engineers and was a heavy equipment operator. Cap, age 94, served

with the 163rd Company G (Glasgow) and was a rifleman. Both spent time in the New Guinea campaign. New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.

What a horrible place to fight a war, hell on earth, Cap said. Joe readily agreed. Bugs and rain, rats crawling up your mosquito nest.... It rained so cottonpickin hard, Joe recalled, that he nearly drowned when he tipped his truck over. In the process of continued on page 4

Quite an Honor continued from front

constructing a landing strip, he went to get a load of gravel. Using airport mats for bridges, I thought I was at the end. The front wheels were at the end, and the truck tipped over. We were covered with water, but we managed to get out. I didnt want to drive truck any more, but I was too damn tall to drive a jeep. Despite the hostility between the Japanese and the U.S. soldiers, there is one enemy in particular that Joe will never forget, although he couldnt remember what they called him. We had one Jap come over our headquarters in an airplane every day at 4:30 in the afternoon. But hed fly right over us and then drop his bombs. Despite being a rifleman in a war zone, Cap said the closest he came to death during his time wasnt from the enemy, but would you believe canned tomatoes? Ooh, canned tomatoes sounded so good, he said as he was on a ship in the Pacific Ocean. But a few hours later everyone that ate some were heaving blood. Fortunately a fellow from Lewiston, Idaho, gave them all a spoonful of Paregoric. Why he had that stuff with him Ill never know, but he saved our lives, Cap said. I wish I could have gotten his address I would love to have sent him a thank you card. And there was the malaria. Joe had three big blisters down the middle of his back. Youd lay there and just shiver nonstop, he said. Said Cap, We didnt ever think we were going to survive, but there was a plan for us. But survive they did, the Big Sky Honor Flight taken recently was one wonderful trip. I never thought theyd have anything for us World War II Vets, Cap said, I thought they forgot about us. But this was unbelievable. The day would begin in Billings at 5:45 a.m. with boarding the jet. 262 of the 264 seats were full. They arrived in D.C. around 11:30 a.m. our time. Upon arrival they boarded three big buses and the grand tour began. Along with seeing the Jewel of the Mall the World War II Memorial they would see the Korean War and Vietnam Memorials, The United States Marine Corps War Memorial, better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial, and what was perhaps the most impressive site according to both Joe and Cap was the Changing of the Guard Ritual at Arlington National Cemetery, and how they click those heels as a salute to the veterans. There was also a mail call, where all the veterans received mail just like they had back in their days of service. And our World War II VEterans got the royal treatment while in Washington. From elegant hotel rooms to some fine dining, and even a police escort from the Arlington Cemetery back to the airport at the conclusion of the tour, both Joe and Cap agreed it was a top-of-the-line trip, even though Joe didnt even know Cap was on the same tour until they arrived back in Billings. Id love to go back if I had the money, Joe said. I still get choked up. Yep, Cap said, quite amazing. Unbelievable to travel that far and see that much in that short of time. And theyre still rebuilding, Joe added. Two more of these Big Sky Honor Flights are in the plans, one in October and another in May of next year. In fact, a fundraiser for the October trip will be held in Billings this Friday, September 20th. A Night to Salute Service and Sacrifice will be held at the Northern Hotel and will raise much-needed funds for a statewide effort to send World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to see their memorial. The event begins at 5:45 p.m. with a social hour and will include a dinner and live auction. Corporate table sponsorships are available and single tickets can be purchased for $100. Its a wonderful trip, I recommend it to anyone, says Joe, really wonderful people take care of you. And upon arriving back at Billings, Cap said, Ive never got so many kisses in my life.

Thank you to all who helped in many ways to have our churches come together for the Dr. Gary Wood Revival September 8-11. Special thanks to the Evangelical Church, who provided their auditorium and workers in several areas. The special music that was provided by the Assembly of God, Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Evangelical and Lutheran churches was wonderful and speaks of the unity we can have together as believers.
