Elective Orthopaedics

c. Musculoskeletal Trauma
This part of the country that we cover is highly industrialized, has numerous congested highways and a very dense population. This results in more than our fair share of road traffic accidents many of whom are major polytrauma patients. Industrial accidents and growing mechanization in agriculture contribute a lot of crushed and mutilated hand injuries. Ours is a 30-bedded casualty with another 10 trauma beds for short stay. Two casualty operation theatres, one of them is exclusively for Orthopaedics. We have several associated specialty team of surgeons on call with Orthopaedics. My general attitude is conservative to the treatment of stable diaphyseal fractures, but for articular fractures and polytrauma I do anatomical reduction and internal fixation.

b. Elective Orthopaedics
I have two outpatient days a week and two operating sessions. The operation theatre has two suits devoted totally to Orthopaedics. On an average I perform 300 general Orthopaedic operations including hip and spine a year.

Teaching
We admit 150 students every year in our college. A batch of 20 students are posted in rotation in Orthopaedic OPD & IPD for bedside clinics 3rd year onwards. I take these clinical teaching once a week in the OPD & IPD separately for one hour. Besides I take once a week general lecture for one hour. There is a seminar discussion for one hour in the morning every day for postgraduate students. One MS student is attached for two years with me for research work and thesis writing. I am in charge of the Diploma in Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation Course run under the Centre of Professional Courses, A.M.U., Aligarh since 1993.
