Due to higher grade and lower cost uranium being found elsewhere, the primary purchaser for uranium in Elliot Lake, Hydro One, cancelled their contracts and all the mines were closed by the early 1990s. Efforts to diversify the economy began and the City received funding from Hydro One to assist in transitioning its economy. The Elliot Lake Retirement Living (ELRL) program was born in this era and has achieved significant success at attracting retirees to the community. With the success of the ELRL program, Elliot Lake Ontario is now the second oldest community in Canada. The median age of the community, according to the 2011 Census Data, is 57.1 years of age. The City of Elliot Lake is located within 200 km of major northern city centres; Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, and is also 200 km from an international border
Diversification strategy, Elliot Lake! Practical Solutions for Practical Realities. The Strategy was developed at a community level with an overwhelming level of input from community members. The four main pillars of the strategy are; Health Care, Readiness and Attraction, Capacity Building and Cultural Heritage. The Strategy highlights seven main goals, each with specific strategic objectives. One of the main goals is to Make aging in place a reality, not just a promise. Build Partnerships with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and Educational Institutes; Reach out to Pharmaceutical and Therapeutic Companies; Explore the Living Laboratory; Prepare the Path for Increased Demand in Non-Medical Care Services.
