Overview of Elliot Lake

he City of Elliot Lake is ideally located in the north shore area of Lake Huron with population just over 11,000. Elliot Lake was founded in 1955 when a large ore body of uranium was discovered in the Canadian Shield; the town was rapidly built and numerous mines were brought into production. As a result of the communitys strong reliance on mining, the local economy and population boomed and busted along with world demand and prices for

uranium. Due to higher grade and lower cost uranium being found elsewhere, the primary purchaser for uranium in Elliot Lake, Hydro One, cancelled their contracts and all the mines were closed by the early 1990s. Efforts to diversify the economy began and the City received funding from Hydro One to assist in transitioning its economy. The Elliot Lake Retirement Living (ELRL) program was born in this era and has achieved significant success at attracting retirees to the community. With the success of the ELRL program, Elliot Lake Ontario is now the second oldest community in Canada. The median age of the community, according to the 2011 Census Data, is 57.1 years of age. The City of Elliot Lake is located within 200 km of major northern city centres; Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, and is also 200 km from an international border
