BALI THE RIGHT WAY

Gday folks and welcome to Bali's Premier Weekly Newspaper. It was a lack lustre semi final for the A.F.L. last weekend with Sydney and Geelong taking fairly easy wins. Goodbye Port and Carlton, I hope you have a great end of year team trip. This week should be a cracker with Friday night looking about as much like a grand final as you could ever hope for. Time will tell at the end of the day and frankly Im looking forward to the season coming to a close. This week Saturday is at long last the KTH tipsters party with all tippers welcome to enjoy a few quiet ones and a big feed. I have been asked to lay the rules on the table in this rant so here goes, The festivities kick off about midday and all tippers are welcome to bring their respectives, but, NO PROXYS WILL BE ALLOWED. Management expects everyone will have a great day as usual, with a brownlow style unveiling of the four mystery rounds. At the end of the day when its time to head home, the powers that be have asked that people use their brains and call a taxi or make arrgements to get a lift. Like I said, the party kicks off at midday and will run for the rest of the day so Id say a few of us may get a tad pissed. It was only a few years ago that old mate Loaf, decided to take the bike home and tried to push over a brick wall along the way and need I say, it didn't work, crunch, bang, ouch and a few broken toes later, I trust you get the point. Moving along we did get an email this week from a traveller that I would like to share with you all. The email is as follows: Dear Alias J, I must say I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into Crusoes Island Caf and Bar a few afternoons ago. While enjoying an icy cold brew, the staff asked me if I was hungry and presented me with a very broad menu. From salad to nasi gorang, Schnitsal to Stroganoff. I ended up having a pizza which I must say was excellent. Friendly staff, good music, icy beer and good food, free pool tables. After 8pm its party time as the crowd starts rolling in to enjoy all of the above. This place is well structured n caters well for singles, couples n families. I highly recommend Crusoes, where you are not left to feel like Robinson Crusoe. I stayed till late in the night and ended up going back a few times while I was here. Yours Sincerely Peter Williams, Sydney Cheers for the letter Peter, and we are sorry that the photo you sent with the email cant be published as we just didn't have the room this week. We are all glad you enjoyed Crusoes on Legian street as these guys have been supporting the paper for many years and yes they do run a good operation. When you are on holidays I trust that most readers drop into the many places that support the Kuta Weekly as without these businesses we couldn't do a newspaper each week. Ok folks lastly this week, Kuta Weekly management and staff will offer our condolansces to another lost friend who had been on the island for many years, but has sadly passed away. Old mate Mike Dawson, or as some friends will have known him Mike the Spike He was a very friendly man who never caused any troube to anyone. A very good boxer in his day, he went about his business and poked along seemingly without a care in the world. A terrible loss to the family and friends and we all offer our deepest sympathy to all involved. Ok punters I hope the most of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always try to remember, Those who possess wisdom cannot just ladle it out to every wantwit and jackanapes who comes along and asks for it. A person must be prepared to receive wisdom, or else it will do him more harm than good. Moreover, a lout thrashing about in the clear waters of wisdom will dirty those waters for everyone else. Enjoy Your Week, ALIASJ..

PROPERTY OWNERSHIP IN INDONESIA

As a foreigner, there is a number of ways that can lead to you owning your dream property in Bali.
The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model. Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name. Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

Also, in Sights on Dollar Spending order to attract more foreign visitors, Garuda Indonesia is also Foreign Travelers Because of the declining value of the Indonesian Rupiah against the U.S. Dollar, Garuda Indonesia is stepping up efforts to attract foreign tourists and buffer the airline's income stream. Bisnis.com reports Erick Meijer, the Director of Sales and Marketing for Garuda, admits that the declining value of the Rupiah and higher fuel costs are weighing heavily on the airline's operational costs. The effect is on the ticket price. It's not possible to raise all prices - that would just reduce the number of people flying. The solution is to seek more passengers from abroad. Our hope is that the dollar can be stabilized again, said Meijer when interviewed at the Garuda Indonesian Travel Fair in Jakarta. The Airline's reasoning is that the higher value of the U.S. dollar against the Indonesian actively participating in overseas travel fairs in order to promote various Indonesian destinations. In early November we will join World Travel Market in London. In early January we will participate in a travel fair in Holland to promote Indonesia and seek more foreign tourists, Meijer said. At the same time the Indonesian national carrier is adding new routes and additional frequencies on established routes considered strategically important. This year Garuda will add 17 new domestic routes and 5 international routes including Medan-Penang, SurabayaSingapore, Jakarta-Perth, Jakarta-Osaka, and DenpasarBrisbane. Next year Garuda is considering flying Jakarta-Manila as well as new services to Vietnam. Countries in ASEAN

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI)

This is the right of use over state-owned (crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement. Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity. Or foreigner permanently domiciled in

Two East Timor Nationals Sentenced to Prison for Kidnapping and Theft in Bali
Two Timor Leste nationals, Manuel Hedrique Soares and, his purported lover, Joaninha Maria Graciet Verdial Viera, have been sentenced to two-years and three-months imprisonment for kidnapping a French toddler in Bali in June 2013. Presiding Judge Hadi Masruri handed down the verdict. The punishment was less stringent than the Three-years and sixmonths sought by State prosecutors. The Judges also imposed a fine of Rp. 60 million on each of the

defendants, failure of which to pay will add an additional 6 months to each of their sentences. In rendering the verdict, Judge Masruri said it had been proven that the defendants had criminally kidnapped the child and also committed the theft of private property when they brought 2-

year-old Logan Bertrand Nicholas Mattei from his hotel in Kuta and attempted to sell the child to an orphanage in North Bali. The woman had met the boy's father, Christophe Mattei, at the Bounty Discotheque in Kuta. Invited back to his hotel for the night, the man awoke to find his personal belongings, a sum of cash and his son all missing. Police managed to track down the boy with the help of hotel staff and a CCTV camera installed at the property. www.balidiscovery.com

Today, in times of crisis, we cannot hold on to anachronistic privileges," Mitsotakis said, according to a statement from his ministry. Greece's European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders have given Greece by the end of the year to place 25,000 public sector workers into a socalled "mobility pool", meaning they will either be transferred to another department or fired. Half of those must be placed into the pool by end-September.

Extra holidays scrapped for civil servants

Greece's austerity drive has cost public sector workers a privilege they have enjoyed for more than two decades, six extra days of paid holiday every year if they use a computer.
The decision to scrap the bonus was a "small, yet symbolic" step in modernizing an out-dated civil service, said KyriakosMitsotakis, the administrative reform minister who has taken on the challenge of overhauling public institutions. Bailed out twice by the euro zone and the IMF, Greece has started cancelling arcane benefits to cut state spending and reform a public sector widely seen as profligate and inefficient with a

BLONDE HANDY WOMAN A young blonde girl in her late teens, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a "handy woman" and started canvassing a nearby well-to-do neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any odd jobs for her to do. "Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint the porch" he said. "How much will you charge me?" Delighted, the girl quickly responded, "How about $50?" The man agreed and told her that the paint, brushes and everything she would need were in the garage. The man's wife, hearing the conversation, said to her husband, "Does she realize that our porch goes ALL the way around the house?" "That's a bit cynical, isn't it?" he responded. The wife replied, "You're right. I guess I'm starting to believe all those dumb blonde jokes." A few hours later the blonde came to the door to collect her money... "You're finished already??" the startled husband asked. "Yes," the blonde replied, "and I even had paint left over so I gave it two coats." Impressed, the man reached into his pocket for the $50 and handed it to her along with a $10 tip. "Thank you," the blonde said, "And, by the way, it's not a Porch, it's a BMW."

Japan is to formally complain about a cartoon that appeared in a French weekly newspaper showing sumo wrestlers with extra limbs in front of the Fukushima nuclear plant and linking this to the Olympics, the top government spokesman said.
Tokyo won the right to host the 2020 summer Olympic Games after overcoming concerns about leaking radioactive water at the stricken Fukushima plant north of Tokyo, with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe assuring the International Olympic Committee that the situation was "under control". The cartoon, carried in the satirical Le Canard Enchaine, shows two sumo wrestlers, each with an extra leg or arm, facing off with the Fukushima plant in the background as an announcer says, "Thanks to Fukushima, sumo is now an Olympic sport." Another cartoon shows people in protective gear by the side of a pool.

Pointless award ditched in anti-waste push

Government departments will, for example, no longer assuage anger over corruption and restore faith in the be able to award prizes for "excellent vocational education party. ($1 = 6.12 yuan) teaching materials" or "administration in accordance with the law" for tax collectors, according to the new rules. "In recent years, many government departmentshave been obsessed with these kinds of awards and evaluations and formalism has run rampant," the central government said in a statement on its website. "Not only has this not had the desired effect, it has been a huge waste of personnel and resources and has even caused unhealthy tendencies, causing a strong reaction in society." A similar campaign in 2009 had resulted in annual savings of 6.4 billion yuan ($1.05 billion), the government said. "The cancelling of these 76 awards is just the first step, and the project will continue and deepen," it added. Plaques marking the award of such prizes and evaluations can be seen everywhere in China from ministries to parks and subways and generally have little real meaning as they are mostly given for political rather than competitive reasons. The new rules echo demands made of officials to simplify their lives and get closer to the people by Xi since he took over as Communist Party chief last China said that it will ditch 76 pointless official and sometimes obscure awards as it seeks to rein in November. He has made cutting back on ostentation and waste and extravagance, part of President Xi waste a key theme of his administration, seeking to Jinping's crusade against pervasive corruption.

Japan upset by French

"This cartoon hurts the feelings of those who suffered through the Great East Japan Earthquake," said Chief Cabinet Secretary YoshihideSuga, referring to the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that wrecked the Fukushima nuclear plant, triggering the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. "It is inappropriate and gives a wrong impression of the Fukushima contaminated water issue. It is extremely regrettable." Suga said Japan would lodge the complaint through the French embassy in Tokyo and that the Foreign Ministry had been directed to "thoroughly explain the situation" to avoid similar incidents. Japan was angered last year after a French broadcaster used a composite picture that showed Japanese national soccer team goalie Eiji Kawashima with four arms and the caption "Fukushima Effect" about a save he made in a game between the two nations. The broadcaster subsequently apologized.

Japan was chosen as host for the 2020 Olympics on Sept 7, beating out Madrid and Istanbul despite the issues posed by the Fukushima plant, some 230 km (140 miles) from Tokyo. The crisis shows no signs of ending. The operator of the plant said that levels of tritium considered one of the least harmful radioactive elements spiked more than 15 times in groundwater near a leaked tank over three days this week.

Bedugul
Bedugul is an area in the mountain range of Central Bali.
Bedugul is the name used to cover a large area of the central highlands of Bali around the villages of Bedugul itself, Candikuning, Pancasari, Pacung and Wanagiri (amongst others). This is an area of great natural beauty. The focus point of the area centres on the three crater lakes of Bratan (Beratan), Buyan and Tamblingan, and the nearby botanical gardens. The whole area is at an altitude of 700 metres or more, with the tallest mountain peaks above 2,000 metres, and it can be distinctly chilly here. Bedugul is located about 50 km north of Denpasar on a main route from South Bali to North Bali. Verdant rice terraces and valleys at Jatiluwih Bali Botanical Gardens (Kebun Raya Eka Karya), One of Indonesia's four official botanical gardens. Located in Candikuning. The entrance road is identified by the presence of a giant stone corn on the cob statue! From the information centre buy a copy of an excellent little pamphlet called Six Self Guided Walks in the Bali Botanical Gardens and set off on your way. The gardens are huge covering some 160 hectares and any visitor with an interest in plants and trees could easily spend a whole day here. Jatiluwih A startlingly beautiful area of verdant, terraced rice paddies nestled in the shadow of Mount Batukaru. Take your time and explore thoroughly. There are a number hikes thorough truly stunning terrain. When you have had your fill there are a couple of cafes for refreshment (and yet more views). In 2007 this was nominated as a UNESCO world heritage site. Munduk Waterfall. These falls are impressive and really roar in the wet season. A spot that is little visited, despite being perhaps the most impressive accessible falls on the whole island. Pura Ulun Danu Bratan (Lake Bratan Temple), Lake Bratan, Bedugul. After Tanah Lot, this is perhaps the most photographed temple on the island and is certainly one of the iconic images of Bali. The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan and it can give the illusion of actually floating on the water. Built in 1633, the temple is devoted to Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, goddess of the lake. A beautiful temple in a truly stunning setting. Explore the mountain roads and take in the wonderful views. The area around Munduk to the west of Lake Tamblingan is especially spectacular, and you can continue the drive through Munduk village to Banyuatis and then all the way to Seririt near Lovina on the north coast. Play golf at Bali Handara Kosaido Golf and Country Club, At an altitude of 1,142 metres and surrounded by green mountains, crater lakes and ancient forest, this Peter Thompson designed course is considered one of the very best in Asia. Cloves drying by the roadside in Munduk Birdwatching is good in this area around the lakes, and in the botanical gardens where some 97 species have been officially recorded. A number of scarce montane species are to be found here. Water sports on Lake Bratan. Parasailing, speedboat rides and jetskis are all available if you are comfortable with polluting such a beautiful lake. The more environmentally conscious may wish to restrict their lake activities to renting a rowing boat. These are all controlled from Taman Rekreasi Bedugul on the southern shore of Lake Bratan. Trekking in the mountains and around the lakes is very rewarding. There are regular, organised group departures from Taman Rekreasi Bedugul at Lake Bratan and the Botanical Gardens. If you require an individual guide for your own planned trek, your hotel will be able to help or ask at Taman Rekreasi Bedugul. Popular organised treks include: Climbing Mount Catur (2,096m), starting at Taman Rekreasi Bedugul. This is quite a stiff climb. Around Lake Tamblingan, returning by canoe. A very leisurely trek. Around Jatiluwih with options from a 2 hour stroll to a stiff 8 hour trek. The Munduk area is also popular and extremely scenic. Angseri hot springs lies about 20km to the south of central Bedugul. From the main market head directly south. Bali Treetop Adventure Park Understand the crops. Interesting crops grown in this area include coffee, vanilla, cloves and cacao. Once you know them, you will see clove trees everywhere at the side of the highland roads. There are several coffee plantations on the roads north of Lake Bratan and around Munduk. Bali Treetop Adventure Park, at the Botanical Gardens. The park includes six main circuits that stretch from tree to tree, as well as nets, Tarzan Jumps, and bridges. Each run also features "Flying Fox" zip-lines of up to 160 metres, providing heart-pounding thrills to guests as they fly through the air. Two circuits are designed for young children

I could have taken a picture of you and posted it here to publicly shame you, but I didn't. That's because I am not trying to be vindictive, ma'am. I'd merely like to answer that question you posed. This can be what the politicians call a "teachable moment" for you and everyone like you.
See, I was in line at that particular fast food establishment yesterday. You probably didn't notice me I assume you didn't notice any of us from the way you blatantly barged to the front. I was about to tap you on the shoulder and politely explain how lines are supposed to work in a civilized society, but I could tell you were in the throes of an ungodly rage. I figured this must be an emergency. My God, you were practically foaming at the mouth. I thought maybe someone at the counter had killed your dog, or framed you for a murder you didn't commit, or urinated in your oatmeal this morning. Obviously something serious was going on. Then you suddenly screamed, "NO ketchup! I said NO ketchup!" Okay, so maybe this wasn't a dire situation. It was a condiment situation. Not exactly life or death, but close enough, I guess. The girl at the cash register looked confused. I don't blame her, some irate middle aged woman just barreled in the door yelling about ketchup. She asked you for some clarification, which was reasonable, but apparently you didn't think so. "What's wrong with you people?! I just sat in the drive thru for ten minutes and now I have to come in here because you guys can't understand f*&#ing English! I ordered this burger with NO ketchup but of course I get it with gobs of ketchup. Unbelievable. This happens every f%#ing time!" Wait, it's unbelievable yet it happens every time? Hmmm. And your ketchup specifications are this important to you yet you continually come to the one place in town that apparently has a ketchup obsession? There are literally six other fast food joints within a two mile radius, but here you are at the one place that screws up your order "every f#%@ing time." Interesting. Logical thinking isn't exactly your forte, is it? The poor girl at the counter, who

at these corporate chains push this "customer is always right" crap because they've decided it's good business to placate horrible jerks, in the real world, outside the land of plastic chairs and soda fountains, adults who throw temper tantrums in public are never right about anything. I'm sure some people might take your side. They might come to your defense by telling their own horror stories about all the times when customer service has failed to live up to their standards. Those folks are under the same delusion as you. They think their hallowed "customer" status somehow gives them the right to treat everyone with a uniform and a name tag like garbage. They think their past encounters with subpar service makes it acceptable for them to fly off the handle about ketchup every once in a while. They think the rules of basic decency and respect come second when they are The Customer. And they're wrong. Do you ever wonder why we have so many atrocious politicians? Well, you shouldn't wonder. Just look in the mirror. Bad politicians are generally bad because they can't handle power. It goes right to their head and they become narcissistic, petty, controlling sociopaths. But at least it's a lot of power so the temptation to be corrupted by it is almost understandable. You, on the other hand, become a maniacal tyrant when society hands you temporary and meaningless power over 17-year-old fast food cashiers. I shudder to think what you'd do if you had an army at your disposal. We all get a little unwanted ketchup every now and again, and we are all expected to handle it like mature and decent adults. Some of us manage to make it through our whole lives without ever feeling the need to berate restaurant or retail employees over some small and fixable mistake. Other folks, such as yourself, seem to get into a customer service Battle Royale every time they step outside their house. Maybe it's because the universe is against you guys. Or maybe, just maybe it's because you behave like selfish obnoxious bullies. Just something to think about. Oh, and I'm betting you actually forgot to say "no ketchup" when you placed your original order. Wouldn't that be a totally expected twist to this captivating saga?

likely had no hand in this ketchup fiasco, offered to give you a new burger, plain and dry, just as you prefer. But that wasn't good enough, was it? Their failure to obey your demands must be punished. "No, I don't want a new burger. Give me your name and the number to corporate. I'm sick of this sh*t. Give me my money back and the number to your corporate office! Why can't I ever f#@&ing get good customer service?!" And the exchange went on from there. Calamity. It ended with you promising to get them all fired as you stormed out. Then I finally had my turn at the counter. I ordered a burger. With extra ketchup. Now, I replay this back to you because I realize you probably scream profanities at minimum wage customer service representatives every time you run an errand or grab a bite to eat, so you might not recall the specifics of this one incident. And that brings us to the possible answer to that query you posed in the midst of your ketchup rant. You asked: "Why can't I ever f#@%ngget good customer service?" Well, ma'am, that might have something to do with you being a vulgar, miserable, malicious person. Maybe you get bad customer service because you're a bad customer. Did you ever consider that possibility? I get it. "You're the customer so you're always right." They work here so they have to bend over backwards for you "because that's their job." Well, you're partially correct about that. Yes, you are a customer and, yes, they do work here. But it's actually not their job to deal with psychopaths. Dear Martha,

Ask Martha

What is the etiquette involved in blocking Facebook? Twenty one years ago I had an extramarital affair which resulted in the birth of a daughter. I paid maintenance and saw the child once when she was eleven after much pressure was put on me by the mother of this child who said that it was the right thing to do. When the child turned eighteen I could stop paying money and have had no contact since. Now my daughter has tried contacting me on Facebook and I have blocked her, but she is also trying to get me via my Facebook friends and family who don't even know about her. How do I handle this? Should I leave things as they are with all the high privacy settings and hope she just stops; or call her mother (if I can find the number) to see if she could talk to her about this; or contact the child back via Facebook? I have a successful career and don't really want an illegitimate child turning up at my work or home or doing something to embarrass me in the public arena. John Dear John, I don't want to be overly harsh, but I'm having trouble understanding your point of view. I accept and understand you do not want an illegitimate child turning up at your work or your home, or embarrassing you in public. I accept you have made a decision not to be a part of your child's life. I accept you may not have wanted the child in the first place. But as difficult and confronting and annoying as this situation may be it is still not something you can deal with by increasing your privacy setting. Sometimes we simply have to straighten our spines and confront something head on dear. As awful as it is for you that a mistake has come back to haunt you years later, this mistake is a real person. And as unfair as it may seem to you, you are the biological father of this young woman. I would have thought the least you could do was message her privately on facebook and ask for her number or email so you can communicate privately. Then talk to her. Difficult? Awkward? Aggravating? Embarrassing? Probably all that. But probably still something you need to do. Feel free to tell her how you really feel. Feel free to tell her you don't want communication or a relationship. Feel free to tell her it's not her, it's you. But don't think you can avoid a really major conversation by just blocking her from facebook. Martha

Dire Straits
Brothers in Arms is the fifth studio album by British rock band Dire Straits, released on 13 May 1985 by Vertigo Records internationally, and by Warner Bros. Records in the United States. Brothers in Arms charted at number one worldwide, spending ten weeks at number one on the UK Album Chart (between 18 January and 22 March 1986), nine weeks at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, and thirty-four weeks at number one on the Australian Album Chart. The album is the seventh best-selling album in UK chart history, is certified nine times platinum in the United States, and is one of the world's best selling albums having sold 30 million copies worldwide. It was the first major-label album to have a significant proportion of CD sales, paving the way for that medium as a mainstream format for music.
digital recording came from Knopfler's constant striving for better sound quality. "One of the things that I totally respected about him," Dorfsman observed, "was his interest in technology as a means of improving his music. He was always willing to spend on high-quality equipment.

Before arriving at Montserrat, Knopfler had written all the songs and rehearsed them with the band. The studio lineup included Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), Terry Williams (drums), Alan Clark (piano and Hammond B3), and Guy Fletcher, who was new to the band, playing a synth rig that consisted of a huge new Yamaha DX1, a couple of Roland keyboards, and a Synclavier. The studio itself was small, with a 20 x 25-foot recording space that offered virtually no isolation. "It was a goodsounding studio," Dorfsman later recalled, "but the main room itself was nothing to write home about. A satirical party has spiced up a dull German election campaign with a television advert depicting a 90second sex scene, blurred but leaving little to the imagination.
Die Partei (The Party), whose policies include building a wall around Germany and putting Chancellor Angela Merkel on trial in a cage, said the ad was designed to represent its family policy. Election rules require broadcasters to give parties advertising time to use as the parties see fit. Merkel, with a comfortable lead in the polls over a sofar relatively toothless opposition, has opted for a bland campaign, short

Die Partei failed to meet the legal requirements to stand in the last federal election, but this time is fielding dozens of candidates with next to no hope of getting any into parliament on September 22. It described its advert, which ends with the slogan "Vote for The Party and you'll feel good", as having confused "dozens of pensioners". Among its other policies is a plan to frack Environment Minister Peter Altmaier to release his "enormous energy resources".

"We should be good enough to win, but if we don't bring any of those ... things, they're going to be a very hard side to beat." There is a massive amount of hype surrounding Friday night's final at the MCG because of the epic rivalry between these two clubs. But Mitchell, who captained the Hawks to their 2008 premiership, is keeping whatever thoughts he has about the C a t s t o himself. " Yo u don't get to do it too often - it's a good position to be in," he said. " I ' m happy to be p l a y i n g anyone ... a preliminary final, you're just playing against a side that's in the way of what you want, and that's getting to a grand final and winning silverware. " T h e f a c t i t ' s difference." On Monday night, Mitchell was rewarded for another outstanding season when he was named in his second AllAustralian team. He was named on a halfback flank, but he has filled a variety of roles this season through defence and the midfield. "I've been happy with how I've been able to contribute," Mitchell said. "I've learnt a lot - Luke Beveridge has tucked me under the wing a little bit as our defensive coach. "I've done a lot of different things and I've probably developed my midfield game better. "Hopefully I've become a more rounded player."

Saucy advert spices up dull campaign

Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell says the Hawks must play to their strengths and bring their best game in Friday's preliminary final against arch rivals Geelong.
The Hawks received some positive news on Tuesday when star forward Cyril Rioli moved well at training, raising expectations he will return from an ankle injury. The Hawks will also regain key forward Lance Franklin from suspension, while the Cats have lost Paul Chapman to suspension and Corey Enright remains in doubt with a knee injury. Hawthorn is also coming off an outstanding 54-point qualifying final win over reigning premiers Sydney. It is ideally placed to break the so-called "Kennett curse", the 11-match losing streak against Geelong that started early in the 2009 season. But Mitchell and his teammates are also be mindful of this time last year, when they nearly blew the preliminary final against Adelaide and then suffered an upset loss to Sydney in one of the league's greatest grand finals. "You have a lot of games where perhaps everything is cherry ripe to go your way and it

The goshawk-banding field trips were one highlight of the nature- themed week, which is now in its ninth year. Mr Holdsworth and a team of expert guides also led visitors on tours and hosted nightly seminars and photography workshops. And Christmas Island is high in the pecking order as a place to visit for birding enthusiasts. Endangered birds have a haven on the island, which is a globally significant seabird rookery and home to two of the world's rarest and most spectacular seabirds, the Abbott's Booby (Christmas Island is the only place the bird now breeds) and the Christmas Island Frigatebird, of which there are thought to be only 1000 pairs left.

"The use of lures to attract raptors is an ancient technique used for training in f a l c o n r y, however, as far as I know 'trolling' behind the car is the only project that uses this technique," Mr Holdsworth said. But this is no mere flight of fancy because the luring of the rare goshawk has a more serious side. Once a bird latches on to the lure, Mr Holdsworth and his team catch it, tag the bird and

When you think birds and stuffing, it's usually turkeys that come to mind, and that would seem fitting on Christmas Island.
But the stuffed animal in question was an over-sized toy mouse, filled with fluff not food, and it was dangling from a length of fishing line, being dragged by a ute down a jungle track on the Indian Ocean outpost. Far from being a wildgoose chase or an act of birdb r a i n e d b u f f o o n e r y, t h e extraordinary scene that had feathers flying was an effort to lure the endangered Christmas Island goshawk as part of Bird 'n' Nature Week. The event was observed by dozens of eco-tourists who had flocked from far and wide to assist scientists in catching the goshawk that lives nowhere else in the world. They watched like hawks and the stuffed rodent worked a treat as the small goshawk descended from the tropical skies to latch on to the lure. According to wildlife biologist Mark Holdsworth, the Christmas Island goshawk is rather

Seventh-tackle refs Matt Cecchin and Henry Perenara dropped as NRL wants referees to vocalise tackle count
Referees Matt Cecchin and Henry Perenara have been dropped from this weekend's finals fixtures after their tackle-count error in the Cowboys-Sharks elimination final on Saturday.
Beau Ryan scored the Cronulla Sharks' opening try in the eighth minute at Sydney Football Stadium but replays later showed it was awarded on the seventh tackle by referees Matt Cecchin and Henry Perenara. Cronulla went on to beat the Cowboys 20-18, sending the Sharks through to a semi-final clash with Manly at North Queensland's expense. Cecchin and Perenara have paid the price, while video referees Matt Rodwell and Jason Robinson will also miss out on week two of the finals. Shayne Hayne and Ashley Klein have been named to adjudicate the Manly-Cronulla semi-final, while Ben Cummins and Gerard Sutton will referee the Storm-Knights clash. The NRL has released a statement saying it has taken steps to prevent another seventh-tackle error, saying on-field referees will be expected to vocalise each tackle so that need to ensure that everything can be done to prevent human error. "We also need to accept that in a game as intense and as fast paced as rugby league that you will never eradicate all mistakes either on the part of the players or the officials. "We will be doing everything we can to ensure this does not happen again." The NRL admitted at half-time on Saturday that all six match officials had made a mistake and it was announced immediately after the match an inquiry would be held. NRL referees coach Daniel Anderson said there was no excuse as to why the incident occurred when the two video referees and touch judges also share the responsibility to correctly count the tackles. "We've got six or seven people that count the tackle count in every game and all the fail-safes failed at the same time," he said. That's the most disappointing aspect of it, it is not a single error. It's a whole match official crew who can hold their hand up and admit we let down our rugby league public at that moment."

players and the entire match officials squad will be aware of the count at all times. It says all match officials squads have been reminded of their responsibility in assisting the head referee, while the video referee will also have additional responsibilities in relation to the tackle count. NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said while human error is a fact of life, Saturday's circumstances "remain unacceptable." "The referees accept that there are consequences for actions and that is likely to cost them significantly in the finals series," Greenberg said in a statement. "We do need to keep a sense of perspective. At our end we

Fremantle bracing for midfield battle against Sydney

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon says Sydney's star-studded midfield will present his team a huge challenge in Saturday night's preliminary final at Subiaco Oval. The Swans had three midfielders named in this year's All-Australian side, with Jarrad McVeigh, Kieren Jack and Daniel Hannebery all making the final squad. Dockers midfielders Nat Fyfe and David Mundy missed out on a berth, but defender Michael Johnson was named. Lyon predicts Saturday night's encounter will be won and lost in the midfield. actual fact, I think they've got none. "So it's an incredibly big challenge, one we're excited about and one we're looking forward to. But it's going to be a big challenge." Johnson, who missed the qualifying win over Geelong with a calf injury, was restricted to light duties at training on Tuesday. But Lyon is confident both Johnson and Nick Suban "You protect your defence and give your forwards supply," he (ankle) will be fit to play the Swans. But the news is bleak for said. "I don't think they've got too Garrick Ibbotson, who has been ruled many injuries through the midfield. In out due to his lingering Achilles tendon injury.

A robber who was running away with his hands full of loot from a Florida church was caught when his baggy pants started slipping off, a s h e r i f f ' s spokeswoman said.
She said the man, Anthony Jason Garcia, 31, had been praying in the sanctuary of a large Catholic Church near Walt Disney World when he arose, went into the gift shop, grabbed the cash drawer and ran toward the courtyard with church maintenance director Joe Larkin in pursuit. As they ran, Garcia's baggy pants began to fall down, said Orange County Sheriff's

wrestling hold called a "cradle" until deputies arrived a few minutes later, Watrel said. She said 12 customers and four clerks were present at Mary, Queen of the Universe Shrine during the robbery, but most of them did not immediately notice what was happening because Garcia was so quiet and did not use a weapon. Garcia was arrested on a felony robbery charge. He remains in the Orange County Jail. Church officials say the church gift shop is the largest in the south-eastern United States. The sheriff's office said it was its policy not to disclose the amounts of money in robberies.

China's latest round of panda diplomacy has triggered a row in linguistically divided Belgium leaving Dutch speakers angry that two loaned bears will go to a zoo in the Frenchspeaking region. China offered to lend the giant pandas during a visit by French-speaking Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo this week. The bears - prized for their ability to draw in thousands of visitors - will go to PairiDaiza, a wildlife park in the French-speaking region of Wallonia, not far from Di Rupo's home. Di Rupo said the 15-year loan of male and female pandas, Xinhui and Haohao, was an honor for Belgium. But not all of his compatriots agreed. ZuhalDemir, a lawmaker from the Flemish separatist N-VA party, said it was clear that Di Rupo had intervened to ensure the pandas went to the French-speaking south rather

PairiDaiza had made an official request for the pandas and had contacted China directly. China has agreed to long-term panda loans to a list of countries, including Britain, Australia, Austria, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States. Many zoos have seen visitor numbers spike by 20 percent or more after pandas arrive. Belgium has long been split between the two regions, with different languages, education systems and regional policies. Wallonia was the engine of the economy until the immediate postwar years, but has slipped behind in an era of servicesbased and digital industries. It is now Flanders, with an exportminded services and manufacturing economy, that is wealthier and has an unemployment rate about half that of southern Belgium.

China, said he would seek an explanation from the Belgian prime minister. The 170-year-old Antwerp Zoo said it was disappointed by the decision, noting it had already housed pandas in 1987 and had bid unsuccessfully for another pair 10 years ago. "All in all we are rather surprised that the prime minister did not think of us," a zoo spokesman said.

The Sydney Roosters will get a well-deserved week off after holding out Manly 4-0 to win a brutally absorbing qualifying final at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday.
In a scoreline that was a throwback to the 1980s, both sides played their part in a magnificent encounter that was settled by an eighth-minute unconverted try from Roger TuivasaSheck. It was the sixth time this season the Roosters have held a team scoreless and the crowd of 32,747 witnessed one of the great defensive performances from the hosts - who repelled everything the Sea Eagles could throw at them - in what was the lowest scoring finals game since St George beat Illawarra by the same margin in 1992. Trent Robinson's side made an astonishing 37 tackles inside their own 20-metre line to secure a third win over the Sea Eagles this year - with both sets of players out on their feet at the final siren. Roosters captain Anthony Minichiello lauded his side's defensive effort, while sympathising with Manly, saying his team was forced to hold on for dear life at times. "It was unbelievable from our boys, we worked hard all game," he told Grandstand. "They're a great defensive side themselves and we couldn't score too many points tonight. We got the lone try and had to hold on after that. "Credit to them, they got us through the middle and we just couldn't get over them for a long period of time. Our defence held strong and that's what it's all about." Manly Coach Geoff Toovey must pick up his side to face Cronulla next Friday after the Sharks beat North Queensland 2018 in a controversial opening game of Saturday's double header. In a bruising affair, dominated by the forwards from both sides, Sam Moa limped off just two minutes into the game after dislocating his kneecap. The Roosters' prop was able to return to action later in the game, but Manly's Richie Fa'aoso was not so fortunate after knocking himself out attempting to tackle Dylan Napa and departed the field on a medicab with his neck in a brace.

Fortunately, the former Melbourne prop was able to watch the game from the sidelines but his presence was missed as the Sea Eagles had to play most of the match with 16 players. The second half was dominated by the visitors, who tried everything to breach the Roosters' line, but several efforts were held up with David Williams and Glenn Stewart both going close. Just before half-time, Daly Cherry-Evans butchered a certain try when he grassed an inside pass from Williams - and that moment summed up the Sea Eagles' frustrations.

Newcastle posts 22-6 win over Canterbury to set up semi-final against Melbourne
Newcastle stayed alive in the play-offs following a 22-6 victory over Canterbury in their elimination final at the Olympic stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Knights booked a semi-final date with the Storm in Melbourne next weekend courtesy of their three tries to one triumph. They trailed 6-0 after just 10 minutes when Sam Perrett scored a converted try for the Bulldogs, but impressive composure saw Wayne Bennett's troops post 22 unanswered points. Darius Boyd, Akuila Uate and Jeremy Smith touched down for tries for the Knights, while Tyron Roberts added two conversions and three penalty goals. The Knights' Jarrod Mullen says his side was more than aware of the challenge that faced them against last year's grand finalists. "We knew they were going to be tough the Dogs, they're a very semi-final hardened team so it was good to get the win," he told Grandstand. Mullen praised the Knight's defensive performance, highlighting the early pressure they faced from the Bulldogs. "It was a great defensive effort ... they had a lot of sets on our line and it just showed how good our defence is," he said. It was the first time in seven But they were unable to turn four successive sets into points and the Knights grew in stature. From their first genuine attack, Boyd barrelled over from close range after latching onto Houston's inside pass and Uate added a second when he leapt high to haul in Jarrod Mullen's marvellous kick. A Roberts penalty gave the Knights a 12-6 lead at the break but the visitors found themselves a man down three minutes after the restart when Houston was sent to the sidelines for a professional foul. But the Bulldogs failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage and Roberts increased the lead with his second penalty. Matters were compounded for Des Hasler's side when attacking weapon Barba went down clutching his ankle and with it the Bulldogs' hopes of victory. Bulldogs captain Michael Ennis had a brain snap when he was penalised for interfering with the play 20 metres in front of his own line and Roberts had the simple task of accepting the gift of two points. Veteran backrower Smith then iced the result in the 66th minute with his second try of the year and the Knights almost added some extra gloss to the result but Houston's fourpointer was overturned by the video referee.

years the Knights have won a play-offs encounter and the visitors were worthy victors, hammering the final nail into the coffin of a hugelydisappointing season for the Bulldogs. And they will tackle the daunting assignment of the Storm with fresh confidence after an impressive display before a crowd of 23,086, despite having to play with 12 men for 10 minutes after Chris Houston was sin-binned early in the second half. The Bulldogs suffered a blow early in the second term when departing full-back Ben Barba left the field with an ankle injury. The reigning Dally M medallist had failed to recapture the heights of 2012 due to off-field issues and injury problems and his decline coincided with his side's difficulties. The Bulldogs started the match strongly, as Perrett opened the scoring off a Trent Hodkinson kick with less than 10 minutes on the clock, and they pinned the Knights back in their own half.
