CHAPTER 1

PREFACE

1.1

Introduction

According to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering policies, every third-year student who is pursuing the Bachelor in Engineering-Marine Technology is required to undergo internship attachment which is compulsory after they have completed their 6th semester. This industrial training is a prerequisite short semester before the graduation whereby this training will have a duration of 12 weeks from 17th of June 2013 until 6th of September 2013 and students will be graded as whether pass or fail at the end of this program.

Besides that, there will be the faculty supervisor visiting our attached company during the period of week 6 to evaluate the students performance based on interview session and feedback from industrys supervisor. Hence, every student must be able to describe their training experience during the 6 weeks of their internship attachment in the company. Students should be able to describe and explain their job scope and the things they have learnt from the internship and how they contributed to the company by implementing the knowledge they had learn in university. Besides that, the evaluation was made based on the students punctuality and attendance at the workplace. Moreover, the prime motivation of industrial training is to provide students a real working atmosphere to expose them to working

environment in their respectively field of study where they might not gain during the class lessons.

1.2

Objectives

During the 12 weeks internship attachment, several objectives as follow are clearly stated in facultys industrial training guidebook (Guide Book: Industrial Training for Students). i. To expose student to real working environment and working condition in their respective fields of study. ii. To gain working experience in the organization/ industry in related field of study. iii. iv. To implement the knowledge which student had learn in university. To train students to interact and communicate effectively at all levels in the workplace. v. To train students to prepare technical reports related to the industrial training which conducted. vi. vii. To inspire a spirit or working as a team. To appreciate the ethical values of their profession.

Apart from the objectives stated by the university, I as a student who had undergone the industrial training, have a few objectives set by my own as below:

i.

To familiarize myself with the working environment of shipbuilding industry.

ii. iii.

To practice and utilize the knowledge and skills I have learned in university. To enhance my communication and leadership skills with other engineers, contractors and workers.

iv.

To get a better understanding about the ship building and ship repair processes.

v.

To learn the flow of work in shipyard and how to tackle the problems

Scopes and Industrial Training Program

Scopes of the program is the experience that will undergoes by the student at company or organization which envelopes:

i. ii.

Observe the operation and work flow of shipyard Observe and understand the basic hull construction and erection process

iii. iv. v. vi.

Understand the engineering construction drawings and scantling plans Capability to manage and handle the man power Monitor the work progress according to the projects schedule Able to complete every task given effectively and efficiently

These scopes may differ according to the different company as the types of operation will depend on what kind of job field the company is doing. Thus, the job scopes should be appropriate and relevant with the course taken by the students as they will work as an engineer after they have graduated. Therefore, students should understand the job scopes they are doing and the company they have chosen should be related to the course subject they are studying so that they can apply what they have studied during the industrial training.

Summary of the Internship Program

During this 12 weeks of industrial training in Jurong shipyard, I was attached at the Hull Steel (HS) department as an industrial trainee. On the first week of the training, I was given an orientation on the safety training which I was explained on the ways to identify, handle, and minimize the dangers and hazards when we are in the shipyard. Besides, I was shown with many pictures and videos on how to prevent the dangers and hazards when the workers are working at height, hot work and inside the confined space. Besides, I went to a one-day short course which is the Shipyard Safety Induction Course (SSIC) and passed a test which enabled me to go onboard of a vessel. On the following week, I was introduced to my HS department and my supervisor who is an engineer that is still managing one of the jack-up rig projects. Then, I was explained on how the work flow of this department and its main purpose for new ship building and ship repairing. Hull Steel department mainly to erect and join the blocks together into a vessel where it is only the outer shell of a vessel and the inner parts of a vessel will then be included with the jobs of piping, outfitting, machineries, electrical, ventilation and lastly to paint the vessel with the desired paints. During these 12 weeks of internships, I have learnt the way to communicate and interact with other engineers, contractors and workers on the progress of a project so that the work can be undergone according to the schedule without delay. Besides, I have also learnt on how to study and analyze the construction and hull structure drawings so that I would know on which block and compartment that has to erected first according to the sequence. Thus, as a future engineer, I have to learn to plan the block erection sequence and to estimate the time required to join a block which could also be affected by the manpower and workers practical skills. In addition, I was exposed to many different types of vessel such as the jackup rig, semi-submersible conversion, drill ship and repair ships. These different vessels would require different planning and construction as the problems occurred may not be the same for all. Finally, this internship attachment in Jurong shipyard has definitely exposed to my related working field and environment which also helped me to understand more of my responsibility and job scopes.
