COURSE OUTLINE Department & Faculty: Department of Design, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Subject & Code : System Design

(SME 4533) Synopsis Page 1 of 2 Semester : I Academic Session:

This course is designed for students to gain detailed topical exposure to design methodologies and principles specific to the practice of mechanical design. Emphasis is on developing efficient and

effective design techniques as well as project-oriented skills from both technical and non-technical consideration. At the end of this course, students should be able to identify and apply appropriate methodology in performing design tasks, recognize the fundamental principles of mechanical design and practices, and formulate and apply general problem solving strategy in the analyses of situation, problem and potential problem. At the end of this course, students should also be able to identify and apply industry standards in design communication. Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students should be able to: i. identify and apply appropriate methodology in performing design. ii. recognize the fundamental principles of mechanical design and practices. iii. formulate and apply general problem solving strategy in the analyses of situation, problem, and potential problem. iv. identify and apply industry standards in design communication. v. understand the common tools and concepts in design engineering. vi. perform basic engineering economic analysis. vii. develop appropriate communications skills in engineering design.
