MM1DM1: Design and Manufacture

Drawing Office Exercise 4: Auxiliary Projections
Drawing is a practical subject and you will learn mainly by performing the exercises. It is expected that you will look carefully at the exercises before you come to the class such that you can identify in advance where you will need support in the class. These exercises contribute to the module assessment and you must hand in your work at the end of each Drawing Office even if you have not completed all the exercises. Work handed in late will not be marked without supporting extenuating circumstances documentation. Please ensure your name and DM1 workshop group is printed clearly on every sheet you submit. Marked work will be returned to you at your next Drawing Office.

Exercise 4 Marks Scheme Border (2), title block (4) and projection symbol (4) (out of 10) Marks lost for: features missing, projection symbol too large/small/scruffy/wrong Printing poor Information missing from title block Drawing quality (out of 10) Good features include: Appropriate scale choice, e.g. 1:1, 1:2, 1:5 (i.e. standard) Good line quality (not too wide or too thin, not smudged) Construction lines clearly more faint and narrow than outlines Orthogonal axes used and at approximately the right angles Curves neatly drawn Hatching lines appropriate weight, spacing and angle Centrelines included Poor features include: Poor scale choice, e.g. 1:1.5, 1:3 (i.e. non standard) Line types cannot be distinguished Lines smudged (too soft a pencil) Curves poorly drawn Dotted lines (hidden detail) included Hatching poor Accuracy of orthographic views (out of 30) 26 - 30 Essentially correct 20 - 25 A few minor mistakes/omissions 13 - 19 A few parts wrong, mostly correct 6 - 12 Significant mistakes some parts correct 1-5 Displays little understanding, almost or all incorrect Accuracy of auxiliary view (out of 20) 18 - 20 Essentially correct 13 - 17 A few minor mistakes/omissions 9 - 12 A few parts wrong, mostly correct 5-8 Significant mistakes some parts correct 1-4 Displays little understanding, almost or all incorrect Dimensions (out of 20) Good features include: Correct orientation Good choice of placement No duplicate or omitted dimensions Sensible use of notes where necessary Section plane(s) (out of 10) Marks for correctly indicating and titling the section plane(s) in an approved manner.

Drawing Exercise 4 This is an exercise primarily in auxiliary planes, sections and dimensioning. Complete the following: 1. Add border, title block and projection symbol to an A3 sheet of paper. 2. Choose an appropriate scale, draw a front sectional elevation and a plan elevation. 3. Add an auxiliary view projected from the front elevation. 4. Add all the dimensions necessary to manufacture the part taking care that you have no duplicate dimensions and that dimensions are in the correct orientation and format. 5. Make sure all your section planes are correctly identified and labelled.

Where ellipses are developed, the outer extremes can be projected from other views then sketched by hand. Your final drawing should be laid out in a similar manner to that shown here. Do not include any hidden detail on any views.
