Auburn dream home taps geothermal and solar
he Pattilori family had a vision, a sustainable dream home in the Auburn hills. They asked the designer to make it efficient, yet traditional. Their beautiful home is now a reality and the utilities are very near zero. The deep-set lower windows and overhanging eves and patios minimize summer heat gain. The R40 insulation under authentic roof tiles and insulated slab minimize winter heat loss. The interior is rich and warm country wood beams, arched doorways, travertine, granite, statuary cutouts, alder doors, and more. The homes comfort system is Hydron Module geothermal heat pumps, by Sierra Eco Systems. These compact, reliable
units silently heat, air condition, and generate hot water. By tapping earth energy 24/7, energy use is 30 percent less than conventional air conditioning, and 70 percent less than a propane furnace. Geothermal uses the least amount of electricity possible, by adding solar to run it all magic. The Pattiloris installed 12kW of ground mount solar PV in a corner of the property. The homes grid connected (PG&E) and net metering allows electricity banking when sunny and withdrawals when cloudy, and the only propane used is in the kitchen. Fall: The best landscaping season in the Sierra foothills

hile frost will soon bring summer vegetable gardens to an end, fall planting continues in September, and even November in edible and ornamental landscapes. The best season for landscaping, autumn brings the cooler temperatures that begin dormancy for most plants. At the same time, the clay foothill soil is still warm from the summer months. This perfect combination of slowing growth and warm soil results in greater root growth. The clay soil is slow to cool
in the fall. A fall-planted landscape will need less irrigation and experience little or no transplant shock. Roots will grow in the warm fall soil, resulting in plants that are much more established by the following growing season. Carolyn Singer, The Seasoned Gardener, will be in Building No. 10.
