RESEARCH INTERESTS
My current research interests include: Web query languages; declarative semantics of query
languages; Web-based information discovery; scalable architectures for locating and accessing
distributed heterogeneous data sources; XML storage, indexing and querying; data integration;
distributed continuous queries; data warehousing.
EDUCATION
Sep.1986-Jun.1991 University of Bucharest, Faculty of Mathematics
Thesis: "WebSQL - An SQL-like Query Language for the World Wide Web".
WORK EXPERIENCE
Mar.2001-present IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Hawthorne, New York, U.S.A.
Research Staff Member
• Research in data integration, event processing, data warehousing, data compression and
query processing.
Sep.2002-May.2008 IEOR Department, Columbia University, New York, U.S.A.
Adjunct Associate Professor
Dec.2000-Feb.2001 IBM T.J. Watson Research Center. Hawthorne, New York, U.S.A.
Advisory Software Engineer
• Contributed to the design and implementation of ToX (the Toronto XML Repository), a
document repository for XML.
• Design and implementation of WebSQL, a declarative, SQL-like query language for the
World Wide Web.
Teaching Assistant
• Design and implementation of Hilltop, a Web search engine based on expert documents.
The engine uses a connectivity-based approach to improve precision for broad queries.
