The decision to study abroad, far from friends and families, is probably one of the biggest decisions you have made and we are honoured that you have chosen our institution. With more than 4,000 international students already at Centennial who speak more than 80 languages and represent a hundred ethnocultural groups, our worldwide reputation speaks for itself. Centennial College is determined that your stay in Canada will be educationally successful and personally rewarding. We have four campuses, post-graduate degrees, diploma and certificate programs, expert professors and a vibrant student body. Just as we are certain that you will come away enriched by all the opportunities Centennial can provide, your insights, your input and your contributions will, in turn, make us an even greater institution. Of course, your studies are why you are here, and we trust this handbook will be a useful guide. Whether you decide to stay in Canada when your studies are complete, or if you return home, were certain that Centennial will be an important building block for your future.

Student Photo ID
Now that you are a student of Centennial College, it is very important that you obtain a Student Photo ID card. This card will allow you to access all of the services and benefits that are available to our students. You will need this card in order to pick up your health card, get a student discount on your bus pass, write your exams, apply for a gym membership and much more. You need an activated library account in order to book a tutor online, book AV Media equipment online (faculty), borrow items from the library, renew items online, and use the e-resources from home. The Student Photo ID Schedule is available online at the following link: www.centennialcollege.ca/mycentennial/photoidguide

Locker Rentals
You can arrange for a locker on your campus at the beginning of each semester. Lockers are available to full-time students, for a rental fee, on a first-come, first-serve basis via myCentennial or through your campus Enrolment Services Office. Youll need to provide your own lock and you should install it within the first week of classes, not earlier. For your convenience, locks are available in campus bookstores. In order to legally occupy a locker, you need to pay the locker rental fee. Locker rental agreements are terminated immediately upon official withdrawal from your program or after not registering as a full-time student for a semester. Locker rentals that begin in the fall semester will include the winter semester, with an option to extend your rental for the summer semester at an additional fee. Rentals that begin in the winter semester will also include the summer semester. Lockers with locks that have been placed on a locker by someone other than the person who paid the locker rental fee are considered to be illegally occupied and will be removed. The contents of an illegally occupied locker will be held by Campus Security until the penalty fee is paid. The College will dispose of such contents within 14 days of the seizure. Note: The College is not responsible for damage to, or theft of, contents of lockers. The College will dispose of contents left within 14 days of the end of an academic semester based on the length of the locker rental.

10 Tips on How to be Successful at Centennial

1. Understand Centennials Academic Policies You will find that most schools in Canada will have strict policies on cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, misrepresentation and fraudulent behavior that may be VERY different from classrooms in your home country. It is extremely important that you read over Centennial Colleges academic policies to avoid any preventable academic consequences. www.centennialcollege.ca/aboutcentennial/policies 2. Stay Safe Read over the ways Centennial security team helps ensure your safety and helpful tips on what you can do to stay safe. 3. Ask for help in your classes when needed The Library has many resources to help you be successful in your classes, such as their tutoring program and AskON (online research help). In each academic department you will have a coordinator and/or program advisors whom you have the option to speak with regarding your class inquires such as exams, reports, professors, reasons for absences and more. 4. Get Settled into your new home Read International Education Centre student newsletters for helpful resources for settling into your new community. The newsletters will have links to staff recommended health care clinics, ethnic grocery stores, transportation services and much more.

5. Make New Friends Centennial College is recognized as one of the most culturally diverse post-secondary institutions in Canada. Over 90 cultural groups are represented and 80 languages are spoken on campus. You will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. A great resource to help connect with your classmates is by joining the International Education Centre Facebook group. 6. Get Involved On and Off Campus Part of the benefit to studying abroad is taking advantage of everything the school and city has to offer. You will have the opportunity to experience a new culture first hand. Centennial College and the International Education Centre will host many events throughout the year as well as have volunteer opportunities to allow you to get involved in different ways. Check out Centennial Colleges Leadership passport program online at www.centennialcollege.ca/LeadershipPassport 7. Talk to Someone when you feel alone The counseling services at Centennial are here to help you with cultural changes, personal counseling, crisis intervention and more. Many International Students will go through an adjustment period when they move to a new environment and sometimes will need to speak to someone about how well they are adjusting. Refer to page 14 to read more on the counseling services available to you. 8. Stay Healthy Eating healthy and staying active is essential for anyones success. Many students focus more of their studies then themselves. Keeping yourself healthy can help you reduce stress; increase your energy and much more. Focusing on yourself is a success tool that can help you reach your goals. 9. Be aware of expiry dates on your immigration documents Be aware of your study permit, passport and temporary residence visas expiry date. Your study permit gives you the legal right to study in Canada as long as it is valid. You MUST renew it BEFORE it expires in order to keep studying in Canada. Read over the Immigration section of the handbook so you understand your permits. Remember we are here to help, please come into the International Education Centre with any and all concerns regarding your immigration documents. 10. Plan ahead for after graduation As a future college graduate you should plan ahead in order to secure a job within your chosen field upon graduation. This may be by networking with people in your field, updating your resume and learning how to effectively job search. The Career Centre staff at Centennial provides you with the tools to help you prepare. Refer to the Career Planning and Resources section on page 21 for more information.

Safety and Security

Personal Safety Tips If you are staying on campus after-hours, your program chair or manager must authorize the access and advise Security. You then must check in with Security and register with our Working Alone service. Campus Security will then check in with you during their patrols. When leaving, please sign out with Security so we can discontinue this service and provide you with a safety escort to your vehicle or campus bus stop. If you are leaving College property after dark, try to leave with someone you know and trust who can walk with you to your destination. You may also arrange a safety escort through the WalkSafe program. If you think someone is following you, switch direction abruptly. If you still feel uncomfortable, seek an area where there are other people or find an emergency phone and alert Security. If you have to walk alone, do so with confidence. Keep your head up, eyes alert and shoulders back. A passerby with honest intentions will not be irritated with you for acting cautiously. Let others know that you are aware of their presence. Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you feel uneasy, get out or away from the situation.

Travel only in well-lit areas. Do not take shortcuts through vacant, wooded or dark areas. Do not fumble in your purse/pocket for car door keys. Citizenship and Immigration

Important Reminders: A copy of your study permit must be submitted to the International Education Centre as soon as you arrive, so take the time to meet with your Admissions Advisor at Progress Campus, International Education Centre in Room C2-07.

Check your passport expiry date. You must renew it at least six months prior to the expiry date. You are required to have a valid passport before you may apply for any Canadian immigration documents. Check the expiry date of your study permit. We recommend you begin your application process 90 days before your permit expiry date. Ensure that you have a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) if you leave Canada and have plans to return, if you belong to the one of the countries where a TRV is required. International Student Advisors are conveniently located at all of Centennial campuses to help you navigate immigration-related inquiries. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), in conjunction with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is the central federal authority and governing body for international students in Canada. It is your primary responsibility to ensure both your study permit and passport are valid throughout your study in Canada. Remember: Immigration policies and legislation change quite frequently in Canada. Information contained in this section is based on current legislation and policy, which may be subject to change without notice. During your study period, it is important that you remain aware of the most current information.

Navigating MyCIC
You will frequently hear the term MyCIC when communicating with International Education staff and when attempting to apply for most immigration-related matters using the Government of Canada online portal. In order to use MyCIC, you will require a login name and password. Please store both safely as you will need this information to identify yourself and apply for all immigration-related matters online.

22

An International student advisor can assist you to navigate MyCIC. You are encouraged to attend organized workshops, and information sessions, offered every semester, designed to help you navigate the online portal. Workshop information will be posted in International Education offices, and sent to your myCentennial e-mail address.

Study Permit
A study permit is required for all international students who want to study in Canada. Please check that all of your information on this document is accurate. This document gives you the legal status to live and study in Canada. Please ensure you keep this document valid at all times. Y ou must apply for extension before your study permit expires. We recommend you begin your application process 90 days before your permits expiry date. Y ou can continue to study while your permit is being processed by CIC. This is called implied status. I f your study permit has expired and you have not applied for an extension, you have to stop studying. You have 90 days to apply for restoration and extension of your study permit. For more information refer to the expired permits and restoration section on page 10.

Client ID Number/Unique Client Identifier is a number you will find on your Canadian immigration documents. This is your personal identification number (PIN) and must be stored safely for reference.

Temporary Resident Visa

A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is required for most international students, and can be issued in the form of single or multiple entries. It is the Canadian hallmark sticker endorsed in your passport, and should not be mistaken for a study permit or any other document. This visa is required for entry into Canada and you can apply within Canada.
I N T E R N AT I O N A L S T U D E N T

Citizens of certain countries do not require a TRV for entry. See www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/visas.asp to find out which countries require a TRV. Once you have arrived in Canada, it is not mandatory to have a valid TRV if you do not intend to leave the country.

Passport
Note: Please keep your passport safe and make sure you have a photo copy or scanned copy.

Your passport expiration date is critical as most permit and visa durations will always correspond to the expiration date specified on your passport. You will first need to extend your passport in order to apply for any other applications or extensions. While in Canada, students are encouraged to contact the nearest embassy or consulate for your country in Canada to apply for a new passport. Lost or stolen passports If your passport is lost or stolen, follow the steps below: 1. Immediately report your lost or stolen passport to the nearest Toronto police department. Please keep all file numbers and reference documents for future verification. 2. Contact the International Education Centre to set up a meeting with an International Student Advisor. 3. Contact your countrys embassy or consulate to determine the necessary steps to obtain a new passport. 4. Once your new passport is received, you may see an International Student Advisor for assistance with replacing your Study Permit. Passport renewal is a lengthy process, so please store your passport safely to avoid problems. Always keep a photocopy of all your documents and store them separately from the original documents.

Expired Permits and Restoration

If you fail to extend your immigration study permit prior to the expiration date, you will lose status in Canada and must stop studying. Restoration: A 90-day period is granted for students to apply for restoration. There will be a restoration fee in addition to the study permit renewal fee.

24

If you are still registered in classes with an expired study permit, Centennial may request a withdrawal. In most cases, the student can only register with the College once a valid study permit extension is issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Meet with an Advisor immediately if you are in this situation. Implied Status: If your study permit expires while waiting for a decision from CIC, you will automatically have Implied Status in Canada. You may continue studying while on Implied Status until a decision is made by CIC. It is highly recommended not to leave the country during this process.

Inviting Family
As an international student, you may invite your spouse or common-law partner, children or parents to join you in Canada. Any accompanying family members must apply for a visitors visa. You may include your family members (spouse and children only) when you are applying for a study permit. Your family members may apply for a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa Visitor) if you wish to have them accompany you to Canada. Contact your nearest Canadian Embassy, High Commission or Consulate to apply. If you are already studying in Canada and wish to invite your family member(s) to join you, you can support their Vistors Visa application by sending your family members supporting documents. Visit the International Education Office to get more information about how you can invite your family members.

Working in Canada
Canadian work experience can be an exciting opportunity to leverage your skills, education and previous experience. Remember: You are required to have a valid Off-Campus Work Permit to work off campus during your studies.

Note: When applying for your Off-Campus, Post-Graduation Work Permit or Co-op Work permit you may need to complete a medical examination by CIC licensed doctor. Please see an International Student Advisor for more information.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Once you have received your work permit, you need to apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in person at Service Canada. You cannot be paid for work in Canada without a SIN. You must show your SIN card, or proof that you have applied for a SIN, within three days after you start your employment. Who can apply for a SIN? If you are an international student, you can only apply for a SIN if you have a job offer or a valid work permit. Please see your International Student Advisor for further information regarding this process. Remember: A SIN does not give you the legal status to work. This number is used for taxation purposes only. You require the appropriate work permit to work in Canada.

Off-Campus Work Permits

Eligible international students can apply to work off-campus while studying. This permit will be issued with the same expiry date as your study permit. If your study permit expires soon, you may wish to first extend it and then apply for your offcampus work permit. Or, depending on the expiry date of the study permit, you may apply for both permits together. Eligibility Students must meet the following conditions to work: Have a valid study permit. B e registered as a full-time student at Centennial College. B e registered as a full-time student for at least six months (during the past 12 months) in a program other than English-as-a-Second Language or French-as-a-Second Language. H ave a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above. (You can find your GPA in myCentennial under Student Record Information).

26

Once you have been issued an Off-Campus Work Permit, if you do not to maintain any of the conditions listed above, you must surrender your work permit. Contact your International Student Advisor for assistance. Number of hours you can work Students with Off-Campus Work Permits may work for a maximum of 20 hours per week during the regular academic year (September to April) and 40 hours per week during CIC scheduled breaks (summer break, between-semester break, December break, reading week) The Off-Campus Work Permit costs $150. You will need to pay for your Off-Campus Work Permit online with your credit card.

Co-op: (Field Placement or Internship)

Reminder: A Co-op Work Permit is required before you start co-op, internship or practicum placements. You MUST come into an International Education Office at the START of your program to be advised when you should apply for your Co-op Work Permit. This permit is free.

Employers want to hire graduates with education and work experience. Graduating from a program which includes a co-op, placement or Internship provides you with beneficial experience in your field of study. To qualify for co-op work terms, you must complete 80 percent of first-year courses as well as achieve a minimum grade of C in College English (ENGL-170) and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in Engineering Technology, Applied Science, Transportation and Business programs.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

Remember: You have 90 days, beginning from the day after the end of your last semester, in which to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit or before the study permit expires, whichever comes first.

As a graduate of Centennial, there is the opportunity to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Throughout the academic year, the International Education Centre offers workshops on PGWP procedures. Attendance to these workshops is necessary to obtain the relevant guidelines and procedures to graduate and their PGWP application to be processed by CIC. Students who have completed all degree, diploma or certificate requirements will still be considered eligible to work off-campus full-time, provided both the study permit and the Off-Campus Work Permit are valid, while waiting for the PGWP. You do not need a job offer to apply for the PGWP. Please note that Centennial College has no influence over the length of the PGWP validity period. This is entirely a CIC decision. Bridging Extension: You must have a valid study permit in order to apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit. If your study permit expires within 90 days after your graduation date, you can apply for a study permit bridging extension prior to the permits expiry date. Bridging provides students the opportunity to facilitate postgraduation application procedures while maintaining status in the country. This is a study permit extension and can be submitted online to MyCIC. Remember: CIC may require that you undergo a complete physical examination by a designated immigration physician before your PGWP can be issued.

Housing
Accommodation
If you have not yet found accommodation in Toronto, we are here to help. You have a choice of staying at Centennials residence, participating in the Homestay program or living with other students off-campus. For more information on these options, you can visit the following link: www.centennialcollege.ca/international/housing. It is always prudent to have a confirmed arrangements for accommodation, which means that your application is sent, corresponding fees are paid and confirmation is received from the provider. All of these processes must be completed prior to your arrival. Aside from the hardships and anxieties that you may experience upon arrival if accommodation is not arranged and confirmed, you may also end up paying a daily rate of between $80 to $100 or even more, which is quite prohibitive and expensive.

Student Residence
The Centennial College Residence is more than just a place to sleep. Its an opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and memories. It also allows you to get fully involved in college activities and to mature in a rich academic and social community. We strongly recommend that international students stay in our residence during the first year of study to help jump-start their Canadian living/learning experience. For more information on Centennial Residence visit: www.centennialrez.ca

Homestay
Coming to a new country can be exciting, but also intimidating. The Homestay program partners you with a family, which will help you to adjust to your new city by offering advice and information on getting around. You may choose to stay with the family for the duration of your study period, or just until you find your own apartment. While in Homestay, you will also have the advantage of being in an environment in which English is the primary language. It will be as though you are taking an extra language class every day. Health Insurance Medical Services in Ontario
It is extremely important that you collect your health card once it is ready at the start of your current term. You will need to always present this card when you require medical treatment or hospitalization. When your Health Card is ready to be picked up, you will receive an e-mail notification. As a full-time International Student at Centennial College, you are automatically covered by a comprehensive health insurance plan offered through Student Guard Health Insurance. It provides coverage for necessary hospital and medical services. With your health insurance plan, you will be provided a full year of coverage, within the academic year of your enrolment, everywhere in the world, except your country of origin. If you have any issues or questions about your health insurance while at Centennial, feel free to contact your International Student Advisor, Donna Mapanao, at dmapanao@centennialcollege.ca or 416-289-5000, ext. 7373.

How Do I Use Medical Services in Ontario?

In Ontario, health care may work very differently from your home country. In Canada, we have primary care (i.e. cold, mild fever,) where you can visit a walk in clinic or your family doctor if you have one. For more serious conditions, (broken bones, accident injuries, severe pain) we have hospital emergency where you can go for immediate medical attention. We recommend that you see a doctor at a walk-in clinic/after-hours clinic and avoid going to a hospital whenever possible. When requiring emergency care, people go to a hospital. When in a life-threatening emergency, people call 911 for an ambulance, fire or police. It is very important that you remember to bring your health card whenever you go to a walk-in clinic or hospital. Also, make sure to bring a StudentGuard Emergency Medical Expense Claim Form. This form will allow you to claim any medical expenses through your student health insurance plan. You can find this form and information on How to Claim in the Medical/Dental section of this handbook.

40

To search for a clinic near your home and learn more about your health-care coverage go to www.guard.me Another service that is available to you is Telehealth Ontario. Telehealth Ontario is a free, confidential telephone service you can call to get health advice or general health information from a Registered Nurse. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service is offered in English and French, but translation support is available in many other languages. The Registered Nurse will ask you some questions about your illness to assess the seriousness of the problem. Based on the assessment, he/she can help determine whether you should go to an emergency room, wait and visit a doctor the next day, or look after yourself at home. Telehealth Ontario: 1-866-797-0000

If you are a resident of Canada or an international student who is here on a study permit and residing in Canada temporarily, you may be eligible for certain payments or credits, even if you have no income to report or tax to pay. In order to receive these payments or credits, you must file an income tax return. Filing Due Date Generally, your income tax return must be filed on or before April 30 of the year following the year for which the return is being filed. What documents do I need to file an income tax return? Here is a list of some of the documents you may have: T2202A slips from the College, T5 slips from your bank, rental reciepts, metro passes or transit tickets. Once you start working you will recieve a T-4 which allows you to receive additional tax credits. International students will need to have their passports along with the relevant documents needed to complete their tax return form. Students who do not have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) can apply for a temporary ITN (ITN-Individual Tax Number) through a tax consultant or directly before filing taxes. If you are eligible for a refund, you will be paid by cheque or direct deposit to the receivers bank account.

Experience Canada
Canada is a relatively young country but people have been living on its land for millions of years. An important way to add to your Canadian experience is to read and explore your new home. If you are interested in learning about Canadian history, go to www.canada.gc.ca/aboutcanada-ausujetcanada/explorer/hist-eng.html. You can read all about Canadas formation and development from its Aboriginal peoples and the arrival of European settlers to how it became a cultural mosaic today.

Travelling Outside of Canada

If you are planning to travel outside of Canada, be aware of the expiry date on your visa and your visa status. You must have a multiple entry visa to leave Canada and re-enter.

52

A study permit is not a travel document. A study permit does not allow you back in the country; you must have a valid Temporary Residence Visa (TRV) to do so. If you plan on travelling from Canada to your home country through the United States and back to Canada, you will require a valid TRV to enter Canada (if you are from a country that requires a TRV for entry into Canada) and a U.S Visa to enter the U.S. If you are unsure which documents you require, bring your documents to your International Student Advisor and theyll be able to help you. When crossing the border (whether youre driving to the United States or travelling by air or train), you will be asked to show proof of your status. Always carry your original and valid Study Permit with you, along with your passport that has a valid TRV (if you are from a country that requires a TRV for entry into Canada). CIC officials may ask you to prove that you are a student at Centennial College. You may show them a copy of your timetable, transcript or proof of payment of your fees for the next semester. The U.S. Government does not require official College letters for proof of enrolment at a Canadian post-secondary institution. Border-crossing etiquette in Canada may be different from what you have experienced elsewhere. The following are some tips to ensure that your border experience is as smooth as possible. Have all your documents ready. Answer every question truthfully and consistently. D ont offer more information than is requested. Give short answers, and offer only the information that is requested. Dont hesitate. Expect waits of one to three hours. Y ou may be asked to pay tax (duty) on goods you bring back to Canada. Please go online to check out the rules and regulations before you enter into Canada.

Emergencies do arise which may result in a student taking a break during the semester. Please see an International Student Advisor and your Program Advisor before arranging any travel plans.

Travelling During the Semester

H A N D B O O K

I f you are planning on leaving the country during the semester you can request a letter of enrolment (Confirmation of Registration letter) from the International Department. This letter explains that you are currently enrolled at Centennial College but does not explain why you are leaving Canada. Documents which help explain why you are leaving Canada could be a copy of a death certificate, a doctors note or any other type of documentation that may be helpful to explain your situation. I f you are in your co-op, placement or internship semester, you must consult your supervisor at work, your co-op advisor and your International Student Advisor, and your program coordinator before you take a break. You are not allowed to work in Canada during a break from your studies. I f you have an Off-Campus Work Permit and take a break from your studies, you may have to return your work permit to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Talk to your advisor for more information.

Travelling After You Complete a Semester

You may travel after you complete your semester and during your official study break. It is your responsibility to make sure that all necessary deadlines and important dates regarding your fees and class registration are completed in time for your next scheduled semester. You can build your timetable while you are away but before doing so your fees must be paid for that semester. Fees can be paid online. Check the school calendar for important dates and deadlines to ensure you register for the courses you want. School letters are not required documents for travel. CIC officials may ask you to prove that you are a student at Centennial College. You may show them a copy of your timetable, transcript or proof of payment of your fees for the semester you will be attending.

Taking a Semester Off

According to the rules of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), international students can take one semester off if they have completed two consecutive semesters. You must consult with both your program advisor and an International Student Advisor if you are considering taking a semester off.
54

Students are not permitted to take two consecutive semesters off. Taking semesters off will have implications for your Off-Campus Work Permit. Taking a semester off may result in implications for your Post-Graduation Work Permit. If you have an Off-Campus Work Permit and take a non-official break from your studies, you may have to return your work permit to CIC. Speak with your International Student Advisor for more information..

Travelling After You Complete Your Program

We STRONGLY encourage you to apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) before you travel outside of Canada. You can apply for your PGWP online from anywhere in Canada. Once you have a PGWP, your status changes from a student to a worker. If you are from a country that requires a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), you will need to apply for a new TRV that reflects the change in your status. Travelling on a PGWP is different than travelling on a study permit. You may leave and re-enter Canada when you have a PGWP, but you must always carry: Y ou original and valid PGWP, passport with a valid TRV (this TRV must say worker). I f you have a job, you may show them a document that proves you are employed. I f you are unemployed, you may be asked to explain your situation in Canada. The information you need regarding U.S. visas is located at the following website: www.travel.state.gov/visa/visa_1750.html
