CHARLEVOIX And its official.
Recent Rayder graduate Tommy Zipp
committed to attend and play baseball
for Glen Oaks Community College, lo-
cated in Centerville, MI.
Zipp was a second team All-State
pitcher, but will roam the outfield for
the Vikings.
During his senior season in which he
led the Rayders to their best season in
school history, finishing 27-3 overall, a
top ten state ranking and Charlevoix
captured their first ever Lake Michi-
gan Conference championship and
their first district crown since the 1988
season.
Tommy finished with a .354 batting
average and knocked in 30 RBIs on the
offensive side, and when he wasnt pa-
trolling center field for the Rayders, he
set up camp on the mound where he
was nearly unbeatable with a 9-1 record
and 1.93 ERA.
His ability and performance didnt
go unnoticed by fellow coaches as he
was named all-state, all-region, all-dis-
trict, all-conference and academic all-
district.
Tommy was one of the best run pro-
ducers that weve had here,
Charlevoix coach Allen Telgenhof
said. He had the biggest hit of the sea-
son for us - a game winning bases
loaded, bases clearing double with two
outs against Harbor Springs and he
was almost unbeatable on the mound
also.
He deserves a lot of credit for work-
ing so hard to make himself into a very
good player, and he had two great guys
who worked with him a lot, his dad,
Tom, and former pro baseball player,
Mike Epping. Were all very proud to
see Tommy continue his baseball and
academic careers.

Crooked Tree Golf
Club, located in
Petoskey, and a mem-
ber of the Boyne Re-
sorts collection of golf
courses, is receiving a
facelift by renowned
golf course architect,
Arthur Hills, who is re-
designing holes 16, 17,
and 18. Construction is
expected to begin in
late August and the
course will remain
open for play on holes
1 through 15 during
the construction pe-
riod.
Hills and his associ-
ates at Hills & Forrest -
International Golf
Course Architects have
created a plan to reno-
vate Crooked Tree Golf
Club to make the holes
more playable. Signifi-
cant work is being
done to enhance the
greens, which are
being relocated on
holes 16 and 17 and re-
modeled on all three
holes. Other upgrades
include a decreased
slope on the 16th fair-
way and reshaping of
the 17th fairway in
order to improve the
lines of sight to the
greens. Bunker work
on the 18th hole is also
part of the project.
Boyne Resorts will
debut the newly de-
signed holes in the
spring of 2014.
Hills is no stranger
to working with Boyne
Resorts. In the mid-90s,
Hills collaborated with
Boyne Resorts presi-
dent of eastern opera-
tions, Stephen Kircher,
in designing the
renowned Bay Harbor
Golf Club, and con-
structed his namesake
course, Arthur Hills,
which opened in 1999
at another Boyne prop-
erty, Boyne Highlands
Resort in Harbor
Springs.
We are honored to
once again have the op-
portunity to work with
Arthur Hills, a true
golf legend, said
Bernie Friedrich,
Boyne Resorts senior
vice president of golf
and retail. Hills re-
design of Crooked
Tree Golf Clubs fin-
ishing holes will have
a great impact on the
playability of the
course while maintain-
ing the aesthetics and
beauty for which
Crooked Tree Golf
Club is known.
Crooked Tree Golf
Club is a hidden gem
amongst Michigan
golf. Golfers discover-
ing this premier
course are rewarded
with elevated terrain
and centuries-old hard-
woods, challenged with
blind shots and impec-
cable greens, and are
astonished by scenic
vistas and a stunning
location offering
breathtaking views of
Lake Michigans Little
Traverse Bay.
Crooked Tree Golf
Club was originally de-
signed by architect,
Harry Bowers, and
opened in 1991.

Changes are coming to health
insurance come October. Individ-
ual health insurance is now re-
quired by the federal government.
With these upcoming changes,
many people have begun to won-
der if the Affordable Care Act
(ACA) will change their current
health insurance policies and
how they can access the new
health insurances exchanges.
Lyn Jenks, CEO of Charlevoix
Area Hospital, will be presenting
on the expected changes resulting
from the launch of the ACA. Ms.
Jenks will be addressing key
questions regarding the individ-
ual and business mandates,
health insurance exchanges and
the expected penalties for not hav-
ing health insurance coverage.
We are hopeful that these pre-
sentations will help folks under-
stand what the ACA means to
them and how they can access the
insurance exchange to evaluate
and select insurance products
that fit their personal and family
needs.
Ms. Jenks will be speaking at
the following locations, dates and
times.
August 22, at the Boyne City
Public Library at 5:30pm
August 29 at the Charlevoix
Public Library at 5:30pm
September 10 at the East Jordan
EMS Station at 5:30pm
September 17 at the Charlevoix
Public Library at 5:30pm
These sessions are free and
open to the public. The length of
these presentations will be an
hour. Ms. Jenks will conclude
each session with a question and
answer session.

Breastfeeding is known to have a
positive effect on the health of the
infant. But what about the physical
and emotional needs of the mom?
This month is Breastfeeding
Awareness Month, and the impor-
tance of peer support among
moms is being emphasized, accord-
ing to Karen Kowalski, an RN with
the Health Department of North-
west Michigan. Research shows
that mothers who receive peer
counseling from other moms, who
are trained to provide assistance to
expectant and breastfeeding fami-
lies, can breastfeed longer and
with greater success. Kowalski
said this outcome is paramount to
the health and wellbeing of both
the mother and the infant.
Barb, a mom from Otsego
County who tried peer counseling,
agreed. I had two very different
breastfeeding experiences with
each of my two children, she re-
called. Both times, my peer coun-
selor was very knowledgeable and
supportive. She helped me with dif-
ferent techniques and positions,
and gave me confidence that I
could find a way that would work
best for my baby and me. She was
right.
In addition to encouragement,
peer counselors are able to answer
questions and share experiences
during a time when moms need
support the most.
Even when mothers are able to
get off to a good start, all too often
theres a sharp decline in breast-
feeding rates and practices in the
weeks and months after delivery,
explained Deb ONeill, Breastfeed-
ing Peer Counselor. This is the
time when a mother-to-mother sup-
port system is essential.
Kowalski added that breastfeed-
ing moms also need support from
their families, friends and commu-
nities. We all need to praise and
support young families who are
breastfeeding, she said.
Peer support is offered to expec-
tant and breastfeeding families at
each of the Health Department of
Northwest Michigans local offices
in Bellaire, Charlevoix, Gaylord,
Harbor Springs/Petoskey and
Mancelona. The Health Depart-
ment also offers the WIC program,
newborn home visits and phone
consultations with nurses. Moms
can call (800) 432-4121 for more in-
formation or to schedule an ap-
pointment.

The Michigan Department of
Human Services is pleased to
announce the launch today of
Protect MiFamily, the new Title
IV-E waiver project approved for
the state by the federal govern-
ment. The five-year pilot pro-
gram begins operating today in
three counties: Macomb, Kala-
mazoo and Muskegon.
Michigan needs to invest ex-
isting federal resources in the
most effective and innovative
way possible. Protect MiFamily
is designed to do just that by
strengthening families and im-
proving the lives of vulnerable
children, with the aim of keep-
ing families together.
The children involved in this
project will be from birth to 5
years old and determined by
Childrens Protective Services
to be at high or intensive risk
for future maltreatment. Fami-
lies served also must live in one
of the three pilot counties,
where private agencies
Lutheran Social Services of
Michigan and Catholic Chari-
ties of West Michigan will part-
ner with DHS in the new
program. All three counties cho-
sen have a higher than typical
rate of children in that youngest
age group being removed from
their homes and placed into fos-
ter care.
The federal government over-
sees Title IV-E funding to the
states. That money generally
gets spent on the placement
costs involved with moving chil-
dren into foster care. Now,
Michigan is one of just a hand-
ful of states to be granted a Title
IV-E waiver for 2013 and beyond.
There will be no additional fed-
eral dollars involved, but rather
the repurposing of a portion of
existing child welfare dollars to
the project.
Theres been a real disconnect
between what we want for chil-
dren and families and what we
can afford, said Maura Corri-
gan, DHS director. Reallocat-
ing funding from the federal
government into early interven-
tion to prevent abuse and neg-
lect is a smart investment.
Keeping families together and
children safe will be our pri-
mary goal with Protect MiFam-
ily.
One hundred families in each
of the pilot counties (300 total
per year) will be identified and
offered a broad array of serv-
ices in the program, with each
engagement expected to last a
minimum of 15 months.
Protect MiFamily under DHS
will work with its partners to
provide:
Safer ChildrenChildren can
be made safer in their own
homes by better adapting to
strategies under Protect MiFam-
ily, avoiding maltreatment and
the chance of secondary trauma
often associated with foster
care. The extended treatment
plan will allow for monitoring
both immediate and long-term
safety issues.
Strong FamiliesHelping at-
risk families address the root
causes of maltreatment and
neglect, assisting them in rais-
ing happier, healthy children.
Strengths will be identified, as
will barriers like substance
abuse, domestic violence and de-
pression.
Supportive Communities
Many families under stress have
no support system in place. Pro-
tect MiFamily will work to nur-
ture and grow that support base
among family, friends, neigh-
bors and the community.
InnovationWorking to redi-
rect resources right here in
Michigan, at the front end when
a family can still be saved and
preserved intact, with evidence-
based intervention. Protect Mi-
Family will invite new avenues
of collaboration between DHS,
its private partners, faith-based
and other community organiza-
tions.
This new program is an im-
portant step and part of the
larger reform of child welfare,
said Stacie Bladen, Director of
Protect MiFamily for DHS. If
successful, this project will set
the stage for effective preven-
tion and preservation services
along with child protection in
the years to come.
DHS has also partnered with
noted research consultant Wes-
tat and the University of Michi-
gan to provide critical analysis
of Protect MiFamily, for a rigor-
ous ongoing evaluation during
its run and a full report after the
planned conclusion date.

Protect Yourself
and Your Pets
On Monday, the Centers for
Disease Control and Preven-
tion released an estimate of
the number of people diag-
nosed with Lyme disease each
year and their new estimate is
10 times higher than previ-
ously reported.
While the CDCs newest
numbers estimate the number
of Americans diagnosed with
Lyme disease each year is ap-
proximately 300,000 people, vet-
erinarians from Michigan
Veterinary Specialists, a Blue-
Pearl Veterinary Partners hos-
pital, want to remind people
that their pets are susceptible
to Lyme disease as well.
Lyme disease is an infec-
tious disease caused by bacte-
ria that is carried and
transmitted by ticks.
Lyme disease can cause fa-
tigue, fever, joint pain, kidney
damage, lethargy, loss of ap-
petite, neurologic disorders
and trouble walking. Lyme dis-
ease is treatable, but as with
most problems, the sooner it is
caught, the better. If left un-
treated, it is potentially fatal.
Here are some things MVS
and BluePearl doctors recom-
mend to ensure your pet is pro-
tected:
Talk with your veterinar-
ian about vaccinating your pet
against Lyme disease.
Talk with your veterinar-
ian about the best way to pre-
vent fleas and ticks from latch-
ing on to your pet.
They may suggest an oral
medication where your pet is
simply given a pill once a
month or they may encourage
spot-on medications, med-
icated shampoos, powders, tick
dips or tick collars.
Try to keep your pets in-
doors as much as possible and
have your yard and home
treated.
Inspect your pet for ticks if
they have been outside near
wooded areas.
If a tick is found, take
tweezers and remove the tick
as close to the body of the pet
as possible, trying to get the
head of the tick out.
Keep an eye on your pet
and look out for any changes
in behavior.
If your pet is not acting
right, take him or her to your
veterinarian as soon as possi-
ble.
According to data provided
by the CDC, Lyme disease is
found throughout the conti-
nental U.S. but is found more
heavily in the Midwest and
eastern U.S.
According to the CDC, 96%
of Lyme disease cases in the
U.S. were reported from Con-
necticut, Delaware, Maine,
Maryland, Massachusetts,
Minnesota, New Hampshire,
New Jersey, New York, Penn-
sylvania, Vermont, Virginia
and Wisconsin.

Here are some particular areas
you should pay attention to as you
declutter.
Keep furniture to a minimum in
your living areas so that your
rooms look bigger.
Clear out shoes, coats, umbrellas
and other outdoor items from your
foyer or mudroom.
Move out big pieces of equip-
ment, such as guitars, amps, drum
sets, or exercise equipment.
Take down your personal photos
and store them for yourself. Let the
buyer imagine putting pictures of
their own family on the walls, ta-
bles and shelves.
Get rid of old newspapers, books
and magazines, recycling if you
can.
Organize your wires in comput-
ers, printers, televisions and other
electronic equipment so that it
doesnt look sloppy and overwhelm-
ing.
Take away those boxes of tissue,
medicines, magazines and other
items you might have on your night-
stand and keep just lamps, clocks
and maybe a book or two on them.
Edit your bookshelves so that you
have a neat, orderly space with
books and perhaps a few decorative
items, like a vase, globe or other art
object.
Remove everything from your
kitchen countertops, keeping only
essentials like a toaster. Add deco-
rating items sparingly (bowls of un-
blemished fruit look nice). And
clear off all those magnetized
coupons and your childs artwork
from the refrigerator.
Arrange the shelves in your
pantry nicely. Have everything
point in the same direction so that
it looks neat and organized.
Get rid of sickly plants and only
keep a few healthy looking ones on
display.
Make sure your beds are made
and all extraneous items, like
clothes, toys or shoes, are off the
floor.
Clear out the bathrooms and
spruce them up with some fresh
soaps, towels or maybe flowers.
Hide your razors, toothbrushes and
shampoos out of sight in a cabinet
while your house is being shown.
Clean out your closets so they
arent packed to the rafters.
